Get rid of your car or only use it when you have to go somewhere too far to cycle, say after about seven miles. It's surprising how much weight you will lose.

South Beach rocks!!  It's the only plan I have ever been able to stick with for a long period of time (3 1/2 years now).  The reason it works is because it keeps your blood sugars even throughout the day, which prevents sweet and starch cravings and helps control hunger. The main aspects of it are to eliminate products with added sugars, white starches, and trans fats; limit saturated fats; eat plenty of veggies and lean protein, enjoy limited quantities of whole grain products, fruit and low fat dairy, and it allows for occasional indulgences.  It's not low carb.

South Beach was developed to help prevent heart disease and diabetes and the weight loss was a side benefit.  I follow it now for my health more than for the weight loss, as most of the weight loss came the first 6 months.  All of my blood chemistry stats are excellent.  Some of the diabetics on my message boards that follow SB have been able to cut or eliminate their meds.

Most people who do phase one of the plan drop around 10 lbs the first 2 weeks, but it depends on your metabolism, exercise and previous eating habits.  The loss slows down with phase 2 and is maintained with phase 3.

Jimmy Tangos Method works FAST!

Seriously though I lost about 40 pounds in two months by eating a two egg omelet (cheese/ham/some veggies) in the morning and 4-6 ounces of meat with about a cup of vegatables for dinner and nothing else in between.

I maintain a strict low carb lifestyle, I do not eat more than 20 carbs a day, and they come from lean meat, eggs and veggies. You can get more info here at www.lowcarbfriends.com read the kimkins section under diets. If you want more info www.kimkins.com. It is like a very strict atkins plan before atkins started peddling all their own low carb junk and made it OK to eat bread and stuff like that. The fact is we eat way more carbs than we need, carbs are the culprit, bread, pasta, cereal...limit where your carbs come from like mostly from veggies, the weight will fall off..with sensible mainenance you can keep it off.

Some are extremely leery of Kimkins.

SusanofO -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (8/9/2007 4:01:38 PM)

I am not (particularly) a "responsible" type pf Dieter. However, I am an effective one in that I know how to lose pounds (and I do keep them mostly off once I've lost them - every once in awhile a few creep back on, but anyway)....

SO - This is terrible, unhealthy (maybe, not sure, don't care) DIET ADVICE - that WORKS.

**Get some of those "Hollywood Celebrity 2 Day Juice Diet" containers - you can buy them at Walgreen's and CVS, etc. They cost about $10 each. It is a 2-Day juice fast. I alternate these with one day of low-calorie eating (juice for breakfast, a salad or tuna for lunch, and fish or chicken plus veggies for dinner).

**I repeat this pattern for about 1-1/2 to 2 weeks, and Presto! I've taken off about 10-20 pounds (usually about 13-14 pounds). It's next to effort-less, and works. It does take some "will-power" though.

I also do Pilates 4-5 times a week, for about an hour. Pilates has never really seemed strenuous to me - I think it's kind of fun, as far as exercise programs go. Plus, I walk my dogs for about a half hour (or longer) every day. So that helps, too.

Good luck.

camille65 -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (8/9/2007 4:04:09 PM)

It is easier for me if I stick to a set routine of food and times I eat. I bought smaller plates and ate slower.

For breakfast I eat oatmeal and a glass of soy milk.

Mid morning it is a handful of raw almonds and a bit of protein like canned salmon or a slice of chicken.

Lunch is a gigantic salad with loads of nuts, seeds, assorted dark greens and dried blueberries.

Dinner is usually veggies with brown rice or whole grain pasta.

I drink tons of water all day long.

Removing pre-made foods, soda & 'white foods' as well as sugar ooooops and dairy products (cuz I just don't like em) made a huge difference.

I lost 100 pounds in 1 year, have since gained back 20 but I'm mostly okay with it heh.

Watch the little things, like creamer in coffee or going heavy on condiments that are fatty.

Thank you Level. I had great success with it but don't assume everyone will.

theMadWelder -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (8/9/2007 4:24:37 PM)

I dont really know how much help I can be, but here goes.
Speed up your metabolism, small meals maybe 5 or 6 meals per day, this has been said but never miss breakfast. Get your metabolism started.
Water, drink it like it is going out of style.
B12 will also help keep your energy up, I use a tab that is subq. Disolves in mouth, vit C and a good multi.
Weights, yeah I know, one very overlooked exercise is the squat.

ps everything I said could be not for you, but it works for me.

daddysprop247 -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (8/9/2007 4:25:17 PM)

the two quickest, most effective, and easiest methods i've taken advantage of for weight loss have been coke and bulimia. unfortunately, neither method was healthy or wise. so if you want to keep things legal and not puke up everything you eat, you'll have to do it the old-fashioned way: eat less fat, and burn more calories through exercise. sowwy.

Some certainly support her and her system; I would only advise anyone going on it (or any plan) to do their homework.

Of course, plenty still say Atkins is horrible. [8|]

Congrats on you loss!! That menu is almost a perfect South Beach menu except you would need some lean protein at dinner and some low fat dairy during the day.

I will add to that ways to speed up your metabolism and keep it up throughout the day from the book "Flip the Switch".  The book explains why all these things work.

Never sit for more than 30 min. at a time--get up and move or do some qick resistance training. If you can't get up, then do some resistance work at your seat every 30 min.

Eat frequently and always include protein with your snack or meal.

Stay in bright lighting and spend some time outdoors daily.

Get plenty of sleep in a dark room.

Keep stress in check to prevent excess cortisol production.

Drink lots of water, especially ice water.

Start the day with ice water, protein, bright lights and some exercise.

Turn your thermostat down, try to stay cooler than you are used to, including when sleeping.

Use good posture.

Breath deeply.

Eat plenty of calcium, green tea and take selenium supplements.

Get some light exercise after meals.

Spread your exercise out throughtout the day rather than one intensive workout then sitting all day

Suleiman -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (12/30/2007 4:08:59 PM)

I have a few tricks up my sleeve for managing my weight:

#1) I cook. I can even do math and have a basic understanding of food chemistry. That means I can control how much of what I put in my mouth.

#2) I gave up added sugar. I don't worry too much about thinks like bleached flour (tho I try to keep it to a minimum). I just cut out all the sugar and corn syrup.

#3) I don't drive. Never learned how - it's not a vital skill here in the Bay Area. That means I walk a hell of a lot more than thirty minutes every day.

#4) I'm a geek. I always have a bag with me that's got my laptop and a bunch of gaming books. It's rarely more than ten pounds, but if you carry a ten pound bag on a three mile walk, you will feel the resistance.

#5) I'm poor, but I'm also a food snob. I don't eat junk because, for the most part, I don't like it. My parents spent years trying to cultivate a refined palate in me when I was a child, and it's probably saved me from morbid obesity now.

Now, please keep in mind, I'm still anywhere from ten to thirty pounds over my idea weight (there's some fluctuation, and some major disagreement on what "ideal" is). I have a spare tire that showed up in my teens that has never gone away, but after  I got married and moved out to the suburbs, my weight ballooned. I wasn't walking, I was eating way too much sugar, and I was staying home a lot because there was nothing to do except sit in front of my computer and work or veg out. After I swore off sugar and started getting more active, I dropped fifty pounds in about two months, and kept it off. It's not a diet. It's a lifestyle. I'm pretty much resigned to doing this for the rest of my life. I don't like the alternatives. Both my parents are diabetic, and I can't afford to visit the doctor on a regular basis. I don't want to go blind from eating a ding-dong, so I have made a serious effort to get poractgive about my health. Your mileage of course will vary, but the best way - the only real way - to take the pounds off and keep them off is to actually get off your butt and make some serious, permanent changes to your life.

And yes, I do slip from time to time. I some times binge on sweets, or cheat and put a little sugar in my coffee like I used to. What I don't do is decide this means I've failed and ignore my diet. I pick myself up and keep on going, trying to make the right food choices and to stay active in spite of my slip ups.

decstorm37 -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (12/30/2007 4:13:23 PM)

here is what i do. But keep in mind what works for one person might not work for someone else. No fast food! No soda's! no processed food! Lots of water! and yes exercise. I bake or grill a lot of foods chicken lean cuts of beef. Watch the fat grams. Since i have been doing this i have lost 20 lbs. hope it helps.

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (12/30/2007 4:21:11 PM)

Fuck diets...they suck... all u need to do is drop the major issues of weight gain.  For example: Mcdonalds!!! all pop or soda as its called in usa.

Switch to water and regular exercise.  Exercise at your own pace with a routine.
I do it nightly before bed as when you are sleeping you lose the most weight.  I do it 20 minutes every night.  I stick with crunches and stretches.  Walking is another good exercise.  It doesnt matter what you eat if its home cooked.  But then this also depends on your metabolism and where the fat is.  My fat was only in my stomache.  Ive never been fat anywhere else and i can not create muscle.  I cant do cardio..so crunches was my best choice.  196 lbs in 1999 down to 125 in 2004.  just from following what i said.  Its not a fast way but it works.  Heart condition i have means no gym, no specialist, no cardio.  Im now settled at 135.  I have never dieted.  Those plans tend to be way too expensive and hurt you more than actually help you because when you stop the plan you gain the weight back.

I got a horrible virus last week, I dropped about 8lbs in a week. Does that count as weight loss???

Otherwise, normal stuff, work out, eat right, no simple quick fix, drink more water, squeeze in a workout when I can, read more so I eat less

Can you please cough on me and pass on this virus?  =))

Anyway...
Cut out sugar and "white food" carbs, increase water intake.  Not only will this help you lose weight quicker, cutting out sugar will also make your pussy juice clearer and better tasting.  (by the way, vegeratian pussy tastes REALLY good).

If you must have bread, make it whole grain and pasta the same (whole grain). Make one or two small changes each month that way it will be easier for you to be consistant.

Best wishes for your better health in 2008!
