Mini Hijack---- When you walk by someone you don't say "Wow what a great personality" it is not what is noticed at first. I agree that a great personality is VERY important but it is not what attracts people, it is looks. So for those who say looks don't matter, what causes you to what to get to know their personality? Just My opinion.

Maybe it's because I remember the Rockies when they were just hills, but I've learned to accept people as people first and foremost. I recognize that they have 2 eyes, a nose, a mouth and go from there. I've worked in healthcare long enough to not worry so much about how someone looks. Most people look horrible when they are in the hospital, especially in a hospital gown and pushing an IV pole. So when I see someone outside the hospital I just remember what they probably look like IN the hospital and thier looks aren't all that. But who they are on the inside of themselves remains the same whether they are a patient or someone I bump into at a munch. I prefer the part of people that is consistent.

sublizze,
I understand what your saying. What I am trying to figure out is "what" draws you to that person first if it is not looks. you can not see into their soul and see if you want to talk to them or not. Just trying to understand.

What first attracts me to someone depends on where I first come across them.  If I am out and about than generally there will be something about the look of a person that makes me take notice coupled with our conversation if we have any.  Online it will generally be that I find that I am attracted to their words. What keeps me attracted is the whole package, looks (ie. something about them appeals to me), conversation, personality and common interests and that the interest is reciprocated.

Usually it's conversation. Them talking to me and me hearing things that I find interesting. I enjoy intelligent conversation. I like someone who is able to talk about many things and does word plays. Positive attitudes, which are expressed, in part, by conversations.

Outside looks are just that, outside. But people's attitudes and intelligence are what really attract me. If they are willing to have a conversation with me, then I may end up attracted to them. But I'm not going to drool over their body simply because it's pretty. I need far more than that.

Just my thoughts.......

I think the hell with looks within reason now I mean of course, but, personality, a sense of humor, intelligence, and neat and clean is what I like.

Considering how long they have been DEAD i wouldn't be attracted to how either of them looks.  i never found Rock Hudson to be particularly good-looking since my taste runs more to the former guitarist from Korn, Brian Welch or Kevin Costner.  Physical attraction happens first... we can't possibly know someone's personality until we notice them enough to start talking to them.  A good personality does make a marginally attractive person darn close to gorgeous in my opinion.

IMO..it comes down to what attracts you..someones beauty can be someones homely. So for initial attraction..if in R/L..and I am not one to consider looks to be an important issue..the initial attraction to me would be, a certain smile, or a certain attitude, or how they interact with others....there can be many small things that can "peak" your interest initially....Tempting

The remarkable thing about the internet is that often times we are presented with the personality before the look. Internet dating has, in many ways revolutionized the dating world and many who might not have ever glanced at each other a second time in a bar have ended up dating or even married. So the question of looks vs. personality I think is moot. The bottom line is, we're human beings and must be sexually attracted to our mates. That's our nature. Everyone is attracted to different things (thank goodness) which allows for variation. The same holds true for personalities. One man might drive me up the wall but would suit my neighbor perfectly. To each his (or her) own.

If I HAD to choose, for the sake of argument though, I would choose personality. I'd much rather be able to hold an intelligent conversation with a man than have arm candy. Besides, one can always turn off the lights!

sublizzie and Tempting,
thank you both for giving the replys that you have. I am still looking for the answer but maybe it is Me who can't seem to find it. What I mean is that I don't just talk to someone, there has to be something that makes Me want to talk to them. For Me, maybe I am shallow, it is looks. If I see someone who I am attaracted to I talk to them. Sometimes I find out they are not someone I would continue to talk with. I understand both of your points though. Thank you for listening.

what i find most attractive... is when a person really likes who they are.   it's when the good stuff on the inside overflows and what i "see"  is a happy person.  they don't just look attractive.. they are attractive... it's like a magnet.

My sister and I were watching the ballgame recently.  In our house, we are staunch Astros fans, even when they're sucking air like this year.  There are several hottie players on the team and my sister is forever going on about how pretty this one is or that one is.  I'm continually gigging her about it.  So finally, the other night, she says, c'mon, just look at that tight ass!  I told her, I'm not a visual person.  Yeah, he's pretty, but so what?  It doesn't do anything for me.

I have yet to be somewhere in public and see a man I'd like to get to know because of his appearance.  I guess I'm lucky a few men have found me attractive enough to start a conversation!

I've dated the handsome man before.  He was a complete jerk.  I've dated the average guy too.  It's funny, the more you get to know Average Joe, the better looking he becomes.

Even as the sub in the relationship, there has to be some attraction for me to the dominant.  That is probably as important as personality.  I clicked with mine in personality and looks.  She did want someone in-shape, toned, tanned, and fully shaved because she wanted a slave for public display/use.  So I did have to work on my body a little to get there, but since I had most of it going for me already, she was attracted to me..........and I got to be used in public a lot.

I just can never understand this type of choice. I could not be with someone who i found unattractive but i guess i don't have a specific physical type. For me it's always the person's presence. This includes looks but it is also in the way they talk, the way they smile and just the way they make me feel. I don't get crushes on bodies i get crushes on people. Sometimes they are what would be the stereotypical "hot" but sometimes they aren't. I never feel like i have chosen personality over looks though.

For me in general i would rather have a girl who is fun to be around, smart, and a little above average looking than a girl who is a total goddess in respect to looks and a complete idiot  annoying, golddigging and has a bad taste in music.

Somewhere in between works for me.

I doubt that someone who looked like quasimodo would excite my lust. Nor would a girl with the personality of a rattlesnake. In short-moderation.

I need both Physical and Mental stimulation to be attracted to a woman in a deep intimate way...

of course... if we are just going for Lust... physical will do just fine!

I want it all also, if possible.
If I have to make a choice, I guess it would normally be personality.
