Canada uses military might in Arctic scramble

· Building programme is response to Russian move
· UN to decide on seabed claims to huge oil deposits

An international scramble for the Arctic's oil and gas resources accelerated yesterday when Canada responded to Russia's recent sovereignty claims with a plan to build two military bases in the region.  On a trip to the far north, the prime minister, Stephen Harper, said: "Canada's new government understands that the first principle of Arctic sovereignty is: use it or lose it. Today's announcements tell the world that Canada has a real, growing, long-term presence in the Arctic."

Canada has been gearing up for this for quite some time now.  With the warming planet they estimate in about 20 years there will be a functioning North West passage, and huge amounts of shipping is going to start passing through.  Canada wants (and they seem to have a reasonable claim) to regulate the traffic, for a variety of reasons.  I don't think they are actually reacting to the recent Russian grab of minerals and oil.

I see where you are headed....we should form a conspiracy commission, because in world court when the oil leases are parted out for usufruct by the UN, by god, history will be made that day!!!!!!!!!!!! And we will be part of it.

I think based on past performance it belongs to the Portugese by default, and Ja, I don't think we should deign snatching icecaps on the earth when we did the movies about mars.

It is just so---------------

I can only heartily laugh.  These are the wisps that foreign entanglements bring to pass.

We are fighting terror.

That is our job and we are told we are good at it, by those who really give a fuck.

Even tho' the land grab of the Golden West in the USA was undoubtedly "right" I'll bet this one isn't. he he he he he
Dont do as I did whatever you do.

luckydog1 -> RE: Land grab in the Artic (8/11/2007 2:18:14 AM)

Sorry you are confused LAM.  That the planet warms and cools, and has been in a long term warming, with a few dips since the trough of the last Ice Age, is not disputed by anyone, except a few "Flat Earth" types.  The Geologic record sugests it will get quite a bit hotter before it cools off again.  There is debate over whether there is Man caused Catastrophic Global warming, and if it is man caused what to do about it.....which is a different thread and has been beaten to death.

Stephann -> RE: Land grab in the Artic (8/11/2007 3:42:44 AM)

The question isn't if this is right or wrong on Russia's part; clearly, for the Russians, it's a wise decision.  The question is really 'what are we prepared to risk, to prevent it.'  I'd say with our recent Iraq debacle, the clear answer will be "not a damn thing."  The rightness or wrongness only has spin value.

DON'T WE (CANADA) OWN ENOUGH ICE???

Enough ice already. I want sand

BlueCollar -> RE: Land grab in the Artic (8/11/2007 5:48:30 AM)

Prime Minister Harper made Arctic sovereingty a national issue during the last election campaign and this recent move is really just a fulfilment of a political promise nade years ago.  The reality is that the Arctic will soon be a hotbed of human activity.  Recent geological surverys have revealed new diamond deposits and oil fields on a scale never before imagined.  As it turns out, there is a treasure-trove of resources waiting to be extracted under the ice and seabed.  Canada has always maintained it's territorial rights in the North, but only recently has it been visibly threatened by Russia, the United States, and a few other European nations.  A stepped-up military presence will help keep our boundaries defined, but will also service future settlement.
