Yeah, I'd have to agree that I like the way it looks. I'm going to try using rope as well.

One of my favorite resource books for learning different kinds of knots and how they can be applied... I kid you not... is the Boy Scout Field Book.  Has a well illustrated section on dozens and dozens of different kinds of knots and their uses.  Not only will it give you ideas for different kinds of knots, different ways to tie limbs and knots to use for suspension, but it'll also give you some idea on things you can build with rope... like lashing a cage together in the woods...

The down side is there's no info on it about the risks of using rope bondage (not surprisingly) so you'll have to use a lot of your own common sense, be careful not to cut off circulation.

SM 101 by Jay Wiseman has a brief section of rope bondage and also some important advice about safety.
Learning the Ropes by Race Bannon and Guy Baldwin is a book exclusively on rope bondage
Shibari You Can Use by Lee "Bridgett" Harrington covers the basics of shibari style rope bondage

Definately do some Boy Scout research. My Sir is a former Eagle Scout, and uses way too many of those knots for uses other than Sailing. :-)

Knots are over rated in my humble opinion.

Google:  Rigger MorTis, Scott Smith, Midori, Jimi Tatu, Bridgette Harrington, Dov and RainbowRope.

While I am sure some knots can be pretty...the more knots you use, the harder it is to get undone in a hurry if necessary and beyond a square knot you really don't need much else....yes folks, even for effective suspensions. (I swear it's true *S*)

Second that: even using a bowline is pretty uncommon. Spend your time learning anatomy, though - learn where and why to put a rope...

Actually, I've found that most what I need in the dungeon I learned in BSA...

Scary, that.

Jay Wiseman's Erotic Bondage Handbook is worth getting as it is completely about rope bondage.  If you want to get into the more decorative stuff, The Seductive Art of Japanese Bondage by Midori and Showing You The Ropes by Two Knotty Boys are great (the second book is the best step-by-step how-to book on rope I've ever seen).  I have to agree that except for the decorative stuff, there isn't much need to know much more than how to tie a square knot.  And with the decorative stuff, the knots are only there to look pretty.

Which isn't to say that there's not value to looking pretty. One of the things that convinced me of the artistic value of rope as opposed to the simple utility of it was seeing Midori in a rope corset... Between her, Tammad and Lou Duff my kink went to an entirely new level.

I believe Tammad's site has been preserved in it's final state after his death, so I'd recommend that as well - a good intro with good info and a pretty good set of links to resources that may still be accurate.. or at least give you a list of things to Google... ;)

all kinds!  I love para cord for foot bondage...fits nicely between the toes.  paracord and smaller gauge rope is great for long hair bondage.  You can use needlepoint thread also for these things...Needlepoint thread though, if not careful can cut because it is sooo narrow.  So be careful. The thread can be "knotted" into even short hair like mine then be entwined into whatever you are doing with the rest of the body.

Personlly, I love CBT with para cord...wrapped nicely then connected to nipple clamps then connected to a play collar then connected to hand bondage...add some foot and hair bondage to that...and you may even immobilize without trying!  Yummy Yummy Yummy.

Edited to add: Para can be used for head "harnesses" too...just careful around the neck....never tight across the trachea!

Oh, but the aesthetics are worth it! Really, my Sir does it mostly for the act of tying me up and the pretty result at the end FAR more than he does knowing that I'm bound and helpless. He enjoys going through vast amounts of rope and putting several layers into the knots. We don't worry so much about the undoing process, but after one mishap a month ago where the shibari harness I was in started too tight and continued to tighten to the point where I nearly passed out, he always has his medical scissors (or at least his pocketknife) on hand to cut me out in an emergency.

Honestly, I love the length of time that it takes to do some of these elaborate patterns! The scores of rope marks they leave afterwards are very pleasing, both to him and to me. Add on the patience he requires of me when he goes through at least 100 feet of rope, and I'm honored to be his "canvas" (as he affectionately refers to me).

*S* I love the tying and untying aspects as much as I do anything else.

Keep in mind, when rope tightens it can dig in and a knife could harm you as well as cut rope.  EMT shears much better to have around.  I own two pair...one always in my pocket or corset top and the other in my rope bag, always in the same place so I know where to grab em

*ahem* slightly tongue in cheek...only 100 feet? hehe

It is definately about the pretty for me....my husband laughs at me when I say that cause I'm so not a girly girl normally *S*

The one time I nearly passed out, he was visiting me, and the EMT scissors were still on his dresser from our last play session. Only thing I remember was my knees buckling, and not quite having the coherency to tell him what I needed to. The pocketknife was his desperation of not knowing where in my apartment I kept my scissors (and I wasn't lucid enough to tell him), and knowing that something was going to happen if he didn't get me out of the ropes quickly. At that point, the risk of having me totally blackout far superceded the potential for a few knicks/cuts (I'm happy to report that he left not a scratch!). I'm all for the use of EMT scissors...assuming he remembers to bring them!

Note: I've made the new rule that he has to double-check his "toy bag" for things before he's allowed to play...especially after this weekend's mishap where he handcuffed my hands behind me, only to realize that his keychain of keys wasn't in his bag...but was 2 hours away in his apartment! :-/ Thankfully he was able to pick the locks (with a fish hook! I love BSA!)

As to the 100 feet...that's the longest length he has at the moment. His longer piece was destroyed in his frantic attempt to keep me from blacking out. :-( He does intend on purchasing more rope, but he's opted to spend his "monthly budget" on replacing some other equipment in our collection. Besides, he's still experimenting, as I'm the first willing "canvas" he's ever had, so he can try some more complicated things.

This is an awesome animated knot how-to page with dozens of different knots.  I believe I found this site through SimplyMichael's profile.  It's great (partly cuz my brother's nic is Grog!)

I looked at the link Bearlee gave us.  Impressive.  I'm dying to learn the Masthead Knot because I can build a handful, keep em in my bag then when I'm doing what I do, I can use them throughout...on the chest, back, thighs, ass....would look very cool.  Bigger ones for the center of the chest, smaller ones on each ass cheek....oooh one on each ass cheek then spanking...probably won't hurt as much if my hit is solid and I don't make the rope move too much...but what an impression left for later!

I reiterate for those of you who are new, don't let this site intimidate you.  The only knot one really needs 99.5% of the time is a square knot.

If you want to incorporate fun things, different things...go for it.  But please don't look at those pages and pages thinking "I can't do rope bondage; I'll never learn all these knots".  It is ok...cause you don't have to have em.  The lark's head is important to know though a larks head is not a knot. Those come into play mostly when you need to add more rope to your already in session bondage.
