Knots are over rated in my humble opinion.

Google:  Rigger MorTis, Scott Smith, Midori, Jimi Tatu, Bridgette Harrington, Dov and RainbowRope.

While I am sure some knots can be pretty...the more knots you use, the harder it is to get undone in a hurry if necessary and beyond a square knot you really don't need much else....yes folks, even for effective suspensions. (I swear it's true *S*)

I've had the same view for several years now, so much easier using restaints with D rings and whatnot.. easier to change positions, a little more fluid for play.   However, seeing all the Shibari pictures on the net has made rethink this some.  I'm a little out of practice with my rope skills.   I'm rethinking this a little though.

sure if you want to cut off circulation or make it totally and easily escapable.  Ya gotta have a square knot here and there to ensure the rope doesn't tighten too much.  For example a bola bola will tighten right up without a square knot to hold it and that defeats the purpose.

A bowline is used in rock climbing because it is one of the few knots which will not ever slip or tighten despite the load.

A square knot will; it will hold in place and resist coming undone, but I personally would not use one if the knot has to carry any load.  Squirrel comes out the hole, around the tree, and back in the hole.  Alternatively, just make a slip knot and push the bottom loop over the rest of the knot and it pops in place.

The joy of teaching knot tying as a camp counselor.

I disagree with the comment about cotton ropes, but I cannot stand to have unnatural fibers on my skin.  Hemp or cotton are my choices.  An added bonus is time in the washing machine.

But then I have also used boxing hand wraps which have their own unique qualities...

The comments about running around looking for a way to cut the submissive who is collapsing makes me nervous.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

RainbowRope.com is definately my website of choice for MFP.  It is inexpensive and they've never failed to deliver when I've purchased via the internet or at conventions when they are vendors.  LOVE EM.

Sinergy...I've never had trouble when an actual square knot is used vs. a granny knot...If you do a square knot wrong is will slip...but done right it's always held fast for me.

I looked up the bowline and see it's use for sure.

Whiplash....  you can do Shibari without excessive knots.  It is based on aesthetics in my mind, not knots.  For example a Tortoise shell harness does not have to have knots to make the diamonds.

This is an awesome animated knot how-to page with dozens of different knots.  I believe I found this site through SimplyMichael's profile.  It's great (partly cuz my brother's nic is Grog!)

Yeah, the only two reasons I hit 4chan, is to collect photos in the sexybeautifulwomen section, and to collect Caturday pictures. LOL. Plus, if I'm in a bad mood, Random will usually make me laugh.

Karada self-bondage howto, very simple manga style. She looks a bit too matronly for my tastes in the final panel... Linework by Anthony F., colored & gif-ifiedby YT, jpegged by CM - pour quoi?!?

The down side is there's no info on it about the risks of using rope bondage (not surprisingly) so you'll have to use a lot of your own common sense, be careful not to cut off circulation.

Unfortunately, bondage safety often cannot be reasoned out by common sense alone. For instance, although everybody seems to be aware of the dangers of blocking circulation (which in reality often are not as big as suggested), hardly anybody except experts seem to be aware of the much bigger dangers of nerve compression.

On my (free) website, you can find an extensive article with my take on bondage safety, which is based on many articles available on the internet, discussion on specialised rope forums, and other sources, as well as personal experience. Also, I had it checked for medical errors by an (at that time)  almost graduated medicine student. A direct link to the article is http://www.touwtjes.tk/art_veilig_e.html. Now that won't tell you everything there is to know, it might provide a good starting point.

Guilty is correct.  Tightening rope that compresses nerves, for example around the wrists is a big deal. That was part of my point when I mentioned the necessity of a square knot on a bola bola (which is a rope form of cuff used for bearing some weight)
