AMSTERDAM - A Roman Catholic Bishop in the Netherlands has proposed people of all faiths refer to God as Allah to foster understanding, stoking an already heated debate on religious tolerance in a country with one million Muslims.

Bishop Tiny Muskens, from the southern diocese of Breda, told Dutch television on Monday that God did not mind what he was named and that in Indonesia, where Muskens spent eight years, priests used the word "Allah" while celebrating Mass.

"Allah is a very beautiful word for God. Shouldn't we all say that from now on we will name God Allah? ... What does God care what we call him? It is our problem."

Yea-ah. That really doesn't work for me. How about T-shirts that say "Muslim's aren't special" instead?

Whats wrong with that? Arab Christians also refer to God as Allah. Thats simplely their name for him. not all christians speak english and all those different langauges have different names for Him. Allah is just the arabic name.

Now there’s an idea. I think I will just start renaming anyone I run across as I see fit. My new boss at work, from this day forward will be know as “Slower Then Death” (STD) for short. If he should complain, I will simply say “What should you care what I call you; it is my problem.”

Actually, Allah was the pagan Meccans creator-god.

But why quible...

The West is giving everything else up, why not God?

I certainly don't see a problem with it. Neither is a proper name in any sense. Both address the same entity.

Two candidates for proper names have been forwarded, the tetragrammatron and the statement of existence as identity. Those may even be the same thing. Certainly few people use either. Christians and Muslims use the word describing a god in their language, but frequently capitalizing, emphasizing or attaching a definite article. Jews don't use G*d in that way unless they know the word will not be defiled, as I recall, certainly not the tetragrammaton.

I'm torn on it being a good idea... on one hand there's the arabs aren't special thinking. Why should they have special concessions just because there's been a tendancy for them to be more violent than others in recent history. That just encourges people to keep doing what they're doing. On the other, I'm not religous and it's just crazy enough to be somewhat helpful in some situations. Jesus is a prophet in islam so it's not too far fetched to crossover the name....

I agree with the comment that god probably doesn't care what name it's called. If there is such an entity, I doubt that it is at all anything like what we make it out to be. We rarely invent a god greater than ourselves.

To an atheist, and perhaps agnostics as well, it doesn't matter a good goddamn. Personally, I will often use the term "the Universe," to discuss the divine. Whatever word we use is merely a metaphor, to describe something beyond our comprehension.

My issue, and it's one those 'get the guns' kind of issues, is that ANYBODY gets to dictate how I talk about God. I'd rather call Mohammed a pig, and go down fighting.

As I think more of this...

Wouldn't we be better off if all women wore burkas as not to offend Islamics

Wouldn't we be better off if we killed all homosexuals and women who have sex with anyone except the husband chosen for her by her parents as not to offend Islamics?

Wouldn't we be better to remove the clitoris from all women, lest they enjoy sex and thus offend Islamics.

Wouldn't we be better off not educating women past the 6th grade as to not offend Islamics

Wouldn't we be better off by limiting free speech that would otherwise offend Islamics?

Ya know... the whole world and all of its people would be better off submitting to the will of allah come to think of it. Isn't that actually the text book definition for Islam, submission to allah? Doen't Islam mean literally mean submission in Arabic?

Yes yes... to ensure peace we should all convert Islam!

Except for Jews and Blacks who according to Islam are inferrior. They can't really convert can they? They will have to be put to death in the new Islamic world.

Speaking as an agnostic I couldn't agree more.
It was reported that in that area of Iraq where all those bombs went off a few days ago at a recent local "sports" day a woman was stoned to death.
Oh yes we ought to be wary of offending that lot ! SARCASM

This is a lousy idea as it represents capitulation. Capitulating to an aggressor only emboldens them to demand more. Appeasement is a losing strategy when faced with aggression. Either ignore and remove yourself from the aggression, try to talk with the aggressor, or be aggressive back.
