Would anyone care to speculate along with me about the likely economic and social background of most CM members?

I considered initiating a poll, but people rarely self-identify with any acceptable accuracy, so I discarded that idea.

No doubt, any opinion or speculation we might make will be immediately and ruthlessly savaged. Doesn't that just make it more interesting to discuss??

Here's my initial speculation, delivered with absolutely no tact:

CM members disproportionately represent blue collar backgrounds and high school educations.

Notice, I didn't say that was either good or bad. Nor have I said (yet) why I may think so. This is merely my speculative observation. Have one of your own?

Most people I have talked to seem to have at least some university education, and knowledgeable on a wide variety of topics (even if they are completely wrong about them<grins>).

This is what may be true:
CollarMe members have access to computers and use them to browse this site as frequently as they wish to do so.

That's all you can know for sure. Maybe even as little as that needs to be further qualified.

I think if you took a poll you are going to get people from all arena's of the spectrum.
As with all areas of life.

As for myself, I have an advanced degree. I also am comfortable with the amount of money I make.
Although always striving to make more.

What does that mean? You judge.

I am on an email list with a bunch of old friends, about half have BAs the other half don't, I don't. These are people in high level corporate jobs, some overseeing budgets over half a billion, not exactly slouches. It amazes me the amount of ignorance of basic history, simple economics, and rational thought exhibited by those with college degrees.

College teaches you to jump through hoops not to think and in fact, stopping thinking has been the hardest part of getting my current degree at UC Davis. The fact that the kids in the seat next to me are old enough to vote terrifies me.

Well, I've got a Bachelor's degree (and almost a Master's degree) and am financially independent. So maybe I am an exception to the rule?

Is your theory that those who are less educated or less financially well off can tend to think in more "black and white" terms, when it comes to how they view the the "roles" of opposite sex? There is sociological data to back this up, btw.

However -I really do consider BDSM as an option and a sexually-related experimental choice, not as a result of anyone's fundamental view of sexual societal "roles" relating to how they were maybe raised (although that might come into play, to a degree, I admit).

But I don't really relate that to what people are doing here, on the whole, necessarily.

I think there is a wide variety of social class and level of education here in cm. Personally i am total trailer trash but pretty highly qualified. Nine gcses, 4 A levels, qualified learning support assistant for children with learning difficulties, personal licence holder and a diploma for designated premises supervisors. You dont have to be blue collar to be intelligent.
The other comment i will make is that there is (?) a difference between levels of education in USA to Britian. I have been informed that the USA system of education is behind the UK. How true this is i don't know!!

Is this going to turn into one of those threads where we all say how great we are for being in this lifestyle and that the rest of the world is beneath us? Obviously that’s why they reject our ways because they are all such peasants, right?

As far as I can see there is no relation at all between the lifestyle and the social elite of this world. There may though be a relationship between those that take time out of there day to exchange ideas on say a message board and the well to do types in this world.

If you do a poll on this question you’ll get what you always get; people proud of their educational achievements state them and everyone else doesn’t participate leading to a skewed view.

Probably so.
However saying that the only reason i stated my qualifications is to prove you dont have to be blue collar to be educated.
I'm very proud of what i've achieved and so should anyone be who has done their best. If i had no qualifications at all i would still be proud of myself providing i had done my best.
I'd not considered a poll or a discussion about this would turn in to a pissing contest - go figure!!

My back ground is in direct opposition to where I am today. I grew up in a very sheltered but extremely poor home. I did not graduate high school because I got pregnant the first time I had sex and was advised I was getting married. I was sixteen. Even with birth control I was pregnant again at age 18. Divorced and on welfare by age 23.

Now you can toss all of your assumptions as to where I am now right out the window. I have a white collar job and do pretty well financially. Not rich, not poor. Since that age of 16, I have been very well off financially at times, and downright broke at others. I am happy with having free time to enjoy living life, therefor I don't feel the need to keep climbing any ladders. Materially I have way more than I need,, or ever imagined as that 16 yo girl.

Oh, and as an aside. I do take alot of classes and study things that interest me. There is just nothing that drives me career wise, to give me a reason to push towards any degree.

I have met people from all economic backgrounds on cm. I haven't found more or less of one economic class here.
