ok, a little bit off-topic, but how much does getting a tattoo hurt?  and can you get one over, say, a stretch mark and still have it look normal?  not that I have any stretch marks, lol...

It really depends upon the person getting it. I have a girlfriend who got a tiny tattoo on her ankle and said she thought she was going to die and vows to never get another. Myself, I giggled all the way through all of mine because they tickled so much I could barely stand it.

that is encouraging, thanks.  for me it's not a matter of "if", it's a matter of "when" and "what".  I almost have the "what" figured out.

mistoferin is right, it does depend on the person. It also depends on the body part. Where nerves bundles are, amount of flesh, sensitivity of the area, etc...There is a lot that factors into the pain level. Mine goes around my left ankle, not a lot of meat there. Yes it hurt, alot. Would I do it again? Yes I would. For me its an indescribable pain, but it only lasted as long as it took to get the tattoo. I think it was all the nerves there. But don't let the fear of pain keep you from getting one. Have someone go with you to help take your mind off of it, keep you laughing. I did and it really helped.

I asked a friend of mine, who became a well known Dom, why he had a butterfly tattoo on his waist line.He said a long time ago he too his GF to get tattooed. The artist made the first line and she chickened out.The guy said you already paid for it where do you want it? My friend said same place as she was going to get it.It does look out of place with all his spider webs and stuff.

I am not sure when I will be able to show off my UV tattoo. I do carry a small blacklight pen and sometimes I show people. It does show up in one playroom with a black light at the dungeon I frequent.

Really, I wouldn't sweat it too much. You might be someone who thinks it tickles too. Only problem with that is that my ribs were just killing me the next day.....try laughing for 10 1/2 straight hours...lol. The only time I felt anything that even remotely resembled pain, it felt kind of like scratching a sunburn. No big deal though really.

As for the stretch mark thing, that really depends on the stretch mark I think. If it is just flat and shiny I don't think it would look abnormal.....on the other hand if it is a crinkly divot it probably wouldn't cover it.

Blech. Stupid links

Oh. And regarding the pain factor. Mine was only midly uncomfortable the closer she got to my shoulder. It only took about 30 minutes (if that) but after awhile, it got annoying.

It will look normal over a stretch mark but I found that what tickled on normal skin for me hurt like a son of a gun on my stretch marks. That was the only time it hurt though.  The artists had to keep giving me giggle breaks.

I don't even like to get shots at the doctor's. even though I like the way tatts look, I will never get one (perminantly)

I hate getting shots, and blood work is an experience I try to avoid whenever possible, but tattoos are something I would happily do more of.  It's a completely different sensation from a vaccination.

There is a chart, which maps and rates the sensitivity or pain level, for tattooing different areas of the body.  I've seen this in a tattoo shop, posted for the benefit of the clients.  I imagine you could find such a thing online, by searching.

Bony places, covered by thin skin, are among the more painful locations to tattoo.  So, ankles and tops of the feet are high rated, for sensitivity.

Another consideration: Some people's skin takes a tattoo with nice, clean detail, and strong ink definition.  On others' skin, the ink will fade or bleed - don't know if that's quite the term for it.  I don't know what determines this, but you might ask a couple of tattoo artists.

(Oh, I love that moment, from "Airplane!"!  I crack up, every time.  What the hell ever happened to that guy - so funny and quick.
"Steve McCroskey: Johnny, what can you make out of this?
Johnny: This? Why, I can make a hat or a brooch or a pterodactyl... " )

Interviewer: Why did you get wings tattooed across your back?
hyde: Because I want to be an angel.

My friend has a tattoo over a stretch mark and the parts of it that are on the stretch mark are noticeably lighter than the rest of the tattoo.  She has to go in for a touch up on those parts to see if the ink will take.

I would say that it was mildly to moderately painful. I never flinched or winced or ouched during the 1 1/2 hrs, but there were times I had to pause while talking, and focus. (Sure have gotten a lot of mileage out of that Lamaze training for focal point and breathing techniques. Has helped in all kinds of circumstances. *L*)

Before starting, the tattoo artist asked if this was my first tattoo, and when I said it was, he and his partner cracked up, because it was a large tattoo and they thought I was biting off a bit much for a first timer. But they were surprised by how well I tolerated it.

To me, it felt like a cross between my little bullet vibrator, and electrical play. *grins* Most of it, I quite enjoyed. The worst twinges of pain felt sort of like if you pluck out a nose hair. I found the discomfort afterward to be more annoying. Was told it would feel like a bad sunburn. It felt more like a badly scraped knee, except across my whole lower back. Not very bad pain, just not enjoyable like the tattooing itself.

I really can't wait to get my next one. *L*
