The original English spelling of those words was "color" and "theater" but they changed in the 19th century when England fell in love with all things French. The American spellings are thus arguably the more authentic and correct spellings.

While we're on regional differences, only Microsoft Word spells "myself" and "yourself" as "my self" and "your self". And to all those dominants who say things like "You will refer to Myself as Sir" -- bzzzt! It is perfectly good english to say "You will refer to me as Sir."

~ Sitting back and waiting for somebody to respond with "Speak for your self".~

For me when a man has in his profile "I am a Dominate" i wonder about other things about them and the way they are....English grammar and such was never my strong suit but anyone who has read a certain number of books in their lifetime or kept their ears open to general intelligent conversation etc should be able to surmise that saying "I am a Dominate" just is plain wrong and maybe they should investigate it...just my humble opinion...

I recently stumbled across a submissive's profile that said, "I am looking for somebody to dominant me".

Two things jump out at me about this:
1. It turns me on a little, and that's scary.
2. Somebody needs to photoshop a little leather biker's cap and X-harness onto a kitten with that caption.

MasterPervert: I didn't know Microsoft did that - is that even gramatically correct? Your self...my   self. You'd think these high-tech software wizards would know better. Didn't most of them attend Stanford, or Berkely, or something?

I've seen submissives do it, too (but to be honest, not on-line as often as "Dominates". Of course I am straight, so I don't get as much e-mail from female submissives anyway). I still think adding the line: "I am a submit" to my tag-line, might be fun. I'll think about it this week-end...

aidan: Great idea! Too funny! Reminds me of the time littlesarbonn referred to himself in a post as MasterkitttenDom (or something like that). Hehe.

I'd have thought so too, but there you have it.

Now I remember why I perved you in the first place...

Grammar and proper voice are hard enough in Real Life... and the net has only made the situation worse. And since I've yet to meet a TLA I didn't like, She's told me that I'm not permitted to use them. Which makes me all the more aware of how differently I speak than I type...

But, eh, what can you do - other than block and ignore the idiots?

I believe that the governmental form associated with Julius Caesar was not the Dominate but the Triumvirate because of his initial alliance with Marcus Licinius Crassus and Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus. I believe the term was used more by later historians than by Romans of the time.

The next was the Principate or Principatus of Augustus (Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus).

Only with Diocletian, after 284 CE, was the title Dominus formally added to the Emperor's other titles. Because of this the reign became known as the Dominatus which, in English, can be reasonably translated as Dominate.

Roman history and Latin nouns aside, using Dominate in the way originally described in the O.P. is still bad English.

There's no such thing as "the original English spelling."  English spelling was notoriously free before Johnson's Dictionary.  Look up "colour" in the Oxford English Dictionary.  You'll see that it's spelled "colour" right in the first example--from 1398!

I think I asked this question about a year ago, because I was wondering if there was any special reason to use dominate instead of dominant. There wasn't. Especially for "us" non-native speakers it would be very practical if everyone would try to write correct English :-)

The use of the -or ending for French and latin words was common until after the Norman conquest in 1066 when Anglo-French languages started to use -our. As LAM poined out English wasnt standardised until Johnsons dictionary was printed. There are also many words that ended in -our yet have become more common to end with -or such as Chancellor. Much of how word endings were spelt, reflects on if they were French and Latin or Gemanic in origin.

I once read somewhere that Shakespear used to spell his own name at least three different ways.

Well, while we're correcting grammer, dominant is an adjective. EG: I am dominant, or I am a dominant (person).
OK, English class is over. As for the common instance of improper usage, it does tend to reflect upon the percieved intelligence of the "Dominate".
Joseff

Am wondering what Mr. Webster would say about the Urban dictionary.

Correct, an adjective is NOT a noun.

But this is 2007 and Mr Webster is way behind.
I serve a dominant whom I agreed to allow to dominate me.

very good english, but I think the point is some people are trying it in this fashion

"I serve a dominate whom I agree to allow to dominant me."

this discussion reminds me of that whole "All your base belongs to us" bit and the stuff known as Engrish.

All your base are belong to us

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

The phrase is a piece of subtitled dialogue from the introduction to Zero Wing."All your base are belong to us" (often shortened to "All Your Base", AYBABTU or simply AYB) is an Engrish phrase that sparked an Internet phenomenon in 2001 and 2002, with the spread of flash animation that ubiquitously depicted the slogan. The text is taken from the opening cut scene of the English version of the 1989 Japanese video game Zero Wing by Toaplan. Its brief but intense popularity derived in part from its poor translation into English and partly from its near-accidental adoption by a group of Internet humorists. "All Your Base" is still a well-known reference among gamers.

I have high standards.  I demand a Dominant who can spell correctly and use proper grammar.  Priorities, people!   The ability to actually dominate, and to use implements, to have imagination and energy and to give me shivers - that's nice too. But he has to be able to deliver his orders in impeccable, grammatically correct English.
