Ph0enixF1re -> "I am dominate." (8/23/2007 3:39:22 PM)

In reading through so many submissive profiles, there is a common theme that I see quite often.  Many girls (and I suppose boys, though I don't read many of those) express frustration at the basic grammer mistake in the phrase "I am dominate."  It got me thinking if there was ever a situation where that syntax would be correct, and much to my surprise, here is what I found:

"The Dominate" is used as a noun to describe the second phase of government in ancient Rome.  The Ceasar was "The Dominate."  I'm sure that few of the people who write this are using it in that context, but it does sort of fit for a Master to use that term, as it is synonymous with "Ceasar."  At least, that's how I interpreted the Wickpedia entry.  Just another useless factoid for your pleasure.

SusanofO -> RE: "I am dominate." (8/23/2007 3:49:46 PM)

I do think it's an interesting factoid, and diplomatic of you to introduce this topic that way, IMO.

I've always had a little theory that you're actually not that Dominant, if you can't be bothered to use this relatively simple word correctly, in terms of today, however (as I think you are right, most people who don't use it correctly, don't realize that Dominate is not a noun, in today's language  - unless they really do believe they are living in ancient Rome, in which case they have another problem altogether)....

It's not a huge deal, and -
I hate to sound so picky - and people can be intelligent and still not know these things, BUT - this information about the use of this word "dominate" (used in phrases like: "I am a Dominate") is on this site so often that  -

It has started to grate on my nerves when someone insists they are a "Dominate" (Hmmm. Would that be anything like a Dominant, or is it different altogether? Please explain).

Hey - maybe they really ARE a "Dominate". I dunno, since I don't exactly know what that really is....

For the record: Dominate is what you do to someone else (or not. It's a verb). Dominant would be a way to describe your "role" or status, and is a noun - as in :

I am a Dominant. Or: I am dominant over person X______.

Because I dominate (an action verb) them.

*BUT - You simply cannot (to my knowledge) be a "Dominate". You can be a Dominant, though.

End of my little rant. Thanks for listening.

Joseff -> RE: "I am dominate." (8/23/2007 4:15:04 PM)

Well, while we're correcting grammer, dominant is an adjective. EG: I am dominant, or I am a dominant (person).
OK, English class is over. As for the common instance of improper usage, it does tend to reflect upon the percieved intelligence of the "Dominate".

Najakcharmer -> RE: "I am dominate." (8/23/2007 4:15:10 PM)

I R TEH DOMINATE.  I WILL DOMINANT U.  NO 1 CAN REFUSE SUCH ATRACTIV OFFUR.  ON UR NEES NOW.

SusanofO -> RE: "I am dominate." (8/23/2007 4:18:02 PM)

Joseff: Depends on your POV I guess. Gee, you're right, maybe (forgot to mention that in my little rant, that dominant can be an adjective. But I see it as a noun (subject) in terms of the OP's topic. Because I did know it. I've got a degree, and care about these things, and I bother to use things like spell-check, too (because I am a rotten typist, and I know it).

Guess I was wound up. People can make mistakes. But the ones who really give a damn about grammar welcome the information, I believe, and don't make the same ones,over and over. My bad.

But - does this mean that dominate is not a verb, then? I guess I don't undertstand. Although I won't argue endlessly over your right to correct a mistake (It was, and it was completely unintentional - I am pretty tired). I just see this mis-use of the word "Dominate" frequently, I guess.

You can tell me you think I am being arrogant - but maybe you don't get as many e-mails like Najakcharmer's - because you're a man. Well I do (and it's horrifying or amusing, depending on your POV). Lemme tell 'ya - there is no need to feel left out, due to that (trust me).

ExSteelAgain -> RE: "I am dominate." (8/23/2007 4:37:52 PM)

Ah, I just Dom her.

SusanofO -> RE: "I am dominate." (8/23/2007 4:39:14 PM)

Thanks, Ex-Steel, that sort of does solve the problem. There's that, too. "Domming" someone. But I consider that sort of colloquial, I guess. Sort of a "BDSM-world" kind of usage that's pretty common (but you have a kind of point there).

Okay, I admit it. I can't really say why, but people's mis-use of the word "Dominate" in place of "Dominant" is what bugs me. Like I said, it's not a huge thing, and I realize that people can make mistakes (but it can grate on my nerves. Maybe I see it happen more than some people, I dunno). "Domming someone", that word -use, is fine by me - even if that seems inconsistent.

Sorry for the rant. I do think it's an interesting factoid, btw (I really do. It was something I did not know, and it is interesting).

I am not sure the folks who send e-mails like Najakcharmer's are reading much Roman history - but it's interesting information - and I appreciate knowing it. Sorry for my rant. I will shut up now.

Ph0enixF1re -> RE: "I am dominate." (8/23/2007 5:08:25 PM)

"To Dominate" (and all it's conjugations) is definately a verb in common usage.  The folks who use it in the original quote as a noun are making a mistake.  I was simply pointing out that in a very specific context, it can be a noun.  Or maybe it's a gerund in that case?  When a verb acts like a noun.  Wow, did that come from the depths of a mediocre high school education!  Another example of this is:  To run (verb) can also be "the run" (gerund).  Or do I have this mixed up?

Dominant is either a noun or an adjective, depending on context.

Personally, I don't understand why someone would even bother to write this since it's color coded in the email anyway.  Kind of redundant and it should be fairly obvious.

Russian grammer is so much easier.

OH, and if anyone cares, the first phase of government in ancient Rome was "The Principate."  See, now I've made you forget something important :).

Sadly, Naja, I got an "offer" a few days ago that was along those lines. Almost word for word. [:'(]

SusanofO -> RE: "I am dominate." (8/23/2007 5:15:12 PM)

Yes.To dominate is a verb (and college doesn't matter. Caring about this stuff does, IMO). I agree there are maybe many usages for verbs as nouns - I was whining about a common particular mis-use of the word "Dominate" that grates on my nerves. But you've got a very interesting point.

A Dominant I sex as a subject (a noun). To be dominant is an adjective. I am glad we are devoting a thread to this - I hope people read it. I know many know this, but as you said, many to not (it is still itneresting about the Romans, though - I honestly was not trying to steal your thunder - it seemed like an opportune time to discuss mis-use of "Dominate" the way I think some folks (some of the ones who e-mail me, at least) use it. But I won't whine about it anymore (promise).

Interesting point, though, I guess it all can depend...

Susan,
no worries about stealing the thread, since it was exactly this discussion I was hoping to spawn.  Oh, and just so you know, I've got the college (the HS comment was supposed to be funny :)) but you never stop learning.

SusanofO -> RE: "I am dominate." (8/23/2007 5:23:38 PM)

I am glad you started this thread. I am starting to just delete e-mails like Najakcharmer's (and you said you get them as well - because I get them more than occasionally too). It's too bad, because some of these folks are probably nice - but reading their e-mail makes my eyeballs hurt.

Yes, and even we are not speaking English, who think that the words, "dominant," and "submissive," are nouns.  Strictly speaking (and of course, we want to do that), these are still only adjectives, in the English language dictionary.

LOL!! Thats exactly what has been popping up in my mind when I read it!
I also couldn't resist chuckling when this one time I stumbled upon a profile of a woman,  a rather big woman to be more specific, who persisted throughout her profile that she was a very experienced Dome and Domes of her superior quality were hard to find.

I wonder if she was geodesic?

I am tempted to add the following signature to my e-mails:

"I am a dominatrix.  I will dominate you.  I am a dominant person."

It's interesting that you will see people identify themselves as submissives but nobody writes in and says "I am a submit"
