I think that what will be the new trend has already been around for quite some time. For as "liberal" as we are, we're frighteningly conservative as a community...

I see an intersection of teledildonics and electrostimulation play, especially in connection with vocal command interfaces, multicontact display surfaces and the availability of FLOSS multimedia software. Combined with the new trend in DVDs to provide multiple camera angles and increased net bandwidth, live and recordable virtual spaces become quite feasible. And how old is that idea - from the early 70s, if I recall correctly?

Will there be a place for RL play? Of course. But I see the future as continuing to bring people closer together (LD relationships) - but while keeping everyone isolated and in their own domains (computing being a solitary act).

Transportation speed hasn't kept up with telecommunications. It will still be a hassle to hook up with that wonderful Dom you've had fun with who lives in Nan Matol... but it will be easier to keep in touch electronically. A secondary set of standards will become even more prevalent - those who prefer a fleshy experience will consider themselves superior to those who prefer the virtual, and vice versa. Eventually, it will reach a point where one group will invalidate the other completely, creating 2 wildly divergent communities.

Is that a good or bad thing? Neither, to me at least. I'd still be all switchy - I like the idea of teledildonics, but I prefer having the capacity to touch Her or Her to touch me...

Eh, such is my sci-fi moment today.

I can't remember the title of the movie (the one with Sylvest Stalone) where people did not exchange bodily fluids but engaged in mental masterbation via headsets. That actually looked pretty interesting to me. The virtual headset, getting into their mind and making them moan aspect.

I do phone sessions and know that there are many fantasies out there (you have no idea, trust me) that should never become reality and many guys that wouldn’t even attempt realizing even the simplest fantasy play. Having said that I think the future of sex will bring us more virtual reality where we can explore alone & go places we never could in the here and now.

That makes perfect sense on several levels. Not only because many fantasies cannot be made into reality, but as you noted many should not be made into reality. Virtual reality would allow for that fantasy to be "experienced", while retaining the perfection associated with fantasy (ie: an experience that is less than perfection can utterly ruin a good fantasy). And it would allow for the experience of fantasies that should not become reality for a variety of constraints.

Right, but there's a dark side to all of this.

Combine a RealDoll with a servo system, pre-programmed expert system for reactions, IPv6 connectivity to allow it to act as a sound and motion server of it's own and you're starting to approach the idea of uploading a persona into an android. Teledildonics provides a feedback system if participation is desired, but it's not necessary.

What happens when truly sick people get hold of this? I'm sure there will be a market for serial rapists, pedophiles, sexually motivated serial killers for this sort of thing... I mean, if I have the fantasy to do X to someone, yet the legal ramifications are such that I don't act on it, am I better off engaging "the toy" for that purpose? Or not even indulging that shadow portion of my persona and thus having it explode uncontrollably? (no, not specifically me - this is purely hypothetical)

And what would happen in the face of an economic collapse where selling oneself as such a "toy" makes sense if it feeds your family halfway around the world? Are there any differences? Should there be?

Further thoughts on my previous post:
Likewise, with the possibility of "buffered" experience, would you as a submissive want to have the ability to jack in to receive some of the "experience" of being "killed" as such a toy? If there's "snuff tops," it implies that there would be "snuff bottoms" as well. Granted, I'm speaking of using a technological intermediary and not the actual murder of another. But is it the physical act of killing, or the intentional expression that will define murder in the future? Will there be Temperance leagues to stand against the "jackers" and their sick fantasies?

While it'll be possible for things to develop in a nice and genteel manner with pleasant civilized airs, the history of mankind suggests that there will be people like the ones I'm describing... and probably more than we'd like to imagine.

Atlantisking and petdave, you are right on with the predictions about electrics and electronics as many of that type of device is already here and more are on the drawing boards. There will soon be more electronic devices designed for the female and there will one day be sensors that will monitor the human body and modulate the device so that an orgasm can be delayed indefinitely but the bottom kept on edge as long as the top wishes.

Rafters has a good point about the growing divide between haves and have-nots... but staying in my "darker than thou" train of thought:

The growing American Empire will fracture even further between Blue and Red with some Black& Red and Green thrown in as well. Eventually, someone will come up with brilliant idea of buying their own country to flee to to indulge in personal pleasures. Chances are the neighboring territories will be economically "poor" and will offer an influx of persons in a service capacity - indentured servants and slaves.

While it won't necessarily be a "pirate utopia," the possibility of setting up a meritocracy exists in practical terms. It really depends on who's running the show in Sandmutopia (to steal the name for a minute)...

I can see a massive amount of money to be made in this, offering NSA fantasy trips for those wanting/willing to get a bit messy in things that will get them executed in any other country. Investors can give me money via my email address on the other side
