LadyMindParadox -> RE: OH, so THAT's what a master looks like! (7/12/2005 4:49:38 PM)

Unfortunately, I don't think there's much of a standard anymore. If there ever was one, I would presume it was pretty vague due to the various locations, methods, and styles being taught.

If I had to make a best estimate as to why these traditions do not seem to have carried on today I would break it down into the following:
1) Formal instruction vs. informal & no instruction
2) Individuality

I would presume Doms traditionally wore something that would indicate the school, house, style, or region where They were taught. As this process still exists today and is a major right of passage, I believe many of these Doms wear these items with great respect. This also means these items are not meant for every Dom.

And yes, LordMindParadox wears items to represent His standing, His relationship status, and possibly many other things He hasn't quite explained to me yet. This is a result of His formal training which has made Him what He is today.

And even Those who have undergone formal training may opt to alter the items indicating their status by either failing to wear them or changing them in a subtle, but noticeable way.

Some people feel that they are an individual and should be able to act however they desire. I imagine some Doms may find a set trend of "Dom fashion" as imposing on Their own desires. Go figure!

Anyway, the good news is, there are those of us who can spot a Dom a mile away. I had LordMindParadox pretty well pegged right as He walked through the door. Unfortunately, the problem is, most subs are going to come up and ask you for a dance. So, the better option may be to consider how to spot the subs out there. ~shrug~

Well maybe Angelina is kinky too, you never know. LOL But yeah, got confused by the name and the pic.

It has always been blue jeans and a black t-shirt for me. No leather boots, or leather pants. I dress comfortably, but the handcuffs under my belt might be a clue.

JerryInTampa,

I got that "No more Mr. Nice Guy... on your knees..." bumper sticker for one of my good Friends around here. Too bad He won't put it on His car. Something about His car being brand new...

Some people ;-)

Well that is comfortible for me, I usually wear boots til my dog decided to eat them one day, but I just like to look halfway decent. There is no set rules I seen a crossdressing domanatrix once his name as a normal man was Tim as a Dom Her name was Eva. So I think that would throw any rules out as far as dress codes

See, now that's not a bad idea, EmeraldSlave. A simple charm, like a necklace--something suggestive and symbolic.
Well, there is a BDSM emblem you can wear on a necklace, though it might not get the curiosity seekers.

Thanks to everyone continuing the "the will know if you are a TRUE DOM (TM)", we never stop chuckling over that one.

betticus -> RE: OH, so THAT's what a master looks like! (7/12/2005 6:35:37 PM)

This is a good discussion. Something like a dominant advertising to their intended target if one just happens to be around you.

I live in an area where the bdsm lifestyle isn't so big or open so I don't get approached much out of the blue by submissives but it seems that whenever I'm in a club just hanging out with friends at least once someone will ask me if I'm a bouncer. I think it's Southern New Mexico speak for "Dom" but I'm not sure.

The last time it happened I was in a club I photographing a battle of the bands and wearing jeans, a black Pink Floyd t shirt and sporting a rather large digital SLR and someone asked me if I was a bouncer. Only if bouncers are photographers too baby.

So, there might just be something to what you are wearing. Black for some reason seems to interest girls around here.

Weeelllllllllllll.......

My mother made me a homosexual; if you get 3 and a half yards of the green flowered gingham, she will make you one too!

Doms and Dommes come in all shapes and sizes, tempraments, some with and without clothing.........

Thats my take anyway.

I really have to agree with Gemini's "Turn in gold foil" analogy.

People who I meet will most likely know the kind of person I am, wether I am wearing chaps and a vest, or if I'm in a bathrobe and fuzzy slippers. If I have to dress a certain way to convey to someone that I am a dominant, then perhaps I should get out of this business.

The idea that the OP will attract more prospective partners by dressing the part, has some merit...but honestly, I guess it depends on what you're looking for. Long-term D/s relationship? One night stand? I couldn't imagine being with a slave that was attracted to me simply because of the clothes I chose to wear on a particular day. Would she then expect me to wear the same shit, every time we played? Maybe the clothes complete the fantasy...but if you're not looking for fantasy, maybe it's best to just wear something that you are comfortable in....talk to people, and let them come to the realization that you are a dominant personailty.

(Besides, Phoenix is hot as hell and I'll be damned if I'm wearing leathers in July, just to catch someone's eye.)

I am trying to picture you in a bathrobe and fuzzy slippers and it's just not coming to me.....

lol

Dear MrThorns,

Doh! But, of course. Homers...........see? Thats the thing when you start thinking everything has to be One way.

Tell me now Sir; have you ever had your way with a wanton slut; in her travail; on a Betty Boop bathmat? I tell you, my friend, it's the Bomb!
(And people say it isn't just about the sex)

Well Met.

See, actually the T-shirt thing is not a bad idea. Maybe it doesn't even have to suggest being a dom--just the lifestyle (all in order to spark conversation).

Sure, it's approriate, TallDarkAndWitty. By why are you so worried about appropriateness?

Because some people are around unmentionables during the day.

Which is also why I don't go around in thigh highs and heels every day.....

Dude, your avatar is freaking me out...is that you looking very feminine, or is that a pic of a hot chick?

If it's you, I am gonna be queasy...*smile*..if it's not, do you really think it is an appropriate avatar?

It would never be *just* about the clothes but ya know maybe if she had been a really, really good girl , you could, like, ya know, wear a white button down shirt , with black jeans and a nice thick belt...........

I think it's a picture of Angelina Jolie, but I could be mistaken

Hmm...I guess I have always understood an avatar to be a graphical representation of the person behind it. Maybe you are just expressing your inner Angelina Jolie.

I guess it is appropriate if you want people to think you are a female, slightly wacko actress...

Edited to add: The irony of a male dom with an Angelina Jolie avatar starting a thread entitled OH, so THAT's what a master looks like! just dawned on me...
