Status: offline 		CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez said Sunday he could continue governing until 2027 if voters do away with re-election limits because he needs more time in office to establish a socialist economic model in Venezuela.

He has previously said he could stay on as president until 2021 if his proposed constitutional reforms -- which among other changes would eliminate presidential term limits, letting him run as many more times as he wants -- are approved.

Government opponents have attacked the reforms, accusing Chavez of seeking to stay in power for decades like his close friend Fidel Castro of Cuba. Chavez denies the charges and says a new constitution is necessary to move Venezuela toward socialism and help the country's poor.

I don't see how the political situation in the US and in Venezuela are by any mean comparable.
George W Bush has to confront himself daily with a congress and a senate with a strong democratic opposition. Chavez can rule venezuela virtually without opposition. Bush will be out of his office in the next election while Chavez has the strength to curb his oppositions and manipulate the costitution and the elections at his will.
Few countries in the world enjoy the freedom, and the political stability of the US.
Venezuela is far from being one of those countries.

     Tell you what, Simply.  If President Bush is still in office the day after the scheduled inauguration, I'll come join your revolutionary militia (you'd be starting one, right?).

     And it's much easier to let the sun go down on the Patriot Act than to overturn Constitutional Amendments.

Rich:
Are you forgetting that he was elected twice to the presidency?  That he was  returned to office by his supporters when a U.S. inspired coup took power seems to indicate that the people of Venezuela like him.  Wouldn't it seem prudent to let Venezuelans run Venezuela?

Status: offline 		I wouldn't exactly say "Elected". He got the job, but I bet he couldn't show the math *proving* he *deserved* to get the job.

Remember, using the computers which California subsequently tested, and decertified in disgust, as they were vulnerable to the simplest of manipulation makes it IMPOSSIBLE to prove the math.

And I've always believed, if you can't *prove* it, like you *prove* your bank balance every month, then it's just bullshit.

That's a funny concept... Bush is so crooked, he can't even produce the documentation proving he received the necessary votes to be president!

Well, it would be funny, if it didn't indicate the basic fiscal and numerical illiteracy of The People.

Status: offline 		Having lived in Venezuela, for a year and a half and being there for coup.  I can tell you that I saw a mass exit from the country after his return to power, anyone with two penny's to rub together left.  Most of the anti-Chavez leaders eaither disappered, went into hiding or left the country.   This left a majority of very uneducated people, who actually believe that he is doing all of this for them.  While Chavez did bring in many doctors from Cuba to help the poor, I beileve that Cuban military was also brought in to maintain order. I can not count the number of times that locals came up to me to bitch about Bush going into Iraq and not coming in and taking out Chavez when he was so much closer.  Freedom of the press, was starting to be wiped out when we left back in 2003.

Many of them are settling in the United States (we have several such families near my area) and starting businesses. Chavez, like every brain dead socialist, is chasing away his best, brightest and most productive citizens and we get to gleefully take advantage of his stupidity. More jobs and more tax money for us!

I knew it! I just knew that phrase was going to pop up sooner or later.

The people I’ve met are not right wing thugs. They are decent, hard working people fleeing a tyranny that you approve of.  As for why they got green cards, if you don’t like it take it up with the USCIS. I don’t have a problem with decent, hard working people being allowed to immigrate to the U.S. Especially if they are fleeing a tyrant like Chavez. Like I said: his loss, our gain.

When you say there was a mass exit of anyone with two pennies to rub together how many people are you talking about?  Are we talking about a couple of hundred...a couple of thousand or a couple of million people?

What makes you think Chavez is overly concerned with pesky issues like legality?  If Bush could muster the political base Chavez could (in a country less than 1/10th the size of the US) do you doubt he would have?  Being able to use 'legal' means to assert dictatorial authority, does not make one less a dictator.  How many successful, truly benevolant, and happy countries under long term dictatorships can you recall?

If you want to call Cuba a dictatorship then I would submit that the people there are pretty happy.
If you want to call Venezuela a dictatorship then I would submit that the people there are pretty happy.
If you want to call Viet Nam a dictatorship then I would submit that the people there are pretty happy.
I will be the first to agree that both Cuba and Venezuela have some problems but those problems are generated by the U.S.
Viet Nam on the other hand now has KFC and Micky D
