Status: offline 		When Edwards was asked about the growing prison population at the MTV/MySpace forum... he said this...
“We cannot build enough prisons to solve this problem. And the idea that we can keep incarcerating and keep incarcerating — pretty soon we’re not going to have a young African-American male population in America. They’re all going to be in prison or dead. One of the two.”

Apparently he thinks that only blacks are in prison....Edwards needs to get his facts straight...
In 2005, black men in college outnumber those incarcerated by a ratio of 4 to 1.

Status: offline 		Look I just don’t understand all the complaining about African American…Irish American… Asian American… any American in jail…Yes money talks and good lawyers can get you off and those without money don’t get the best lawyers so they get stiffer sentences.

HEY I just had an idea!!!!!…..DON”T BREAK THE DAMN LAW.

If you don’t like the law do like Americans have done since 1776…organize and get it changed.

There is a little bit more to it than that.  

We have a CJ system that is messed up beyond belief, messed up enough to suggest that the Innocence Project may just be scratching the surface.

Kinkbound…. The pressure from the Civil Rights movement changed many laws in America.

Over the years there have been many laws changed or added because of public outcry. A few others in the process now for better or worse are abortion…. stem cell research… gay marriage…. right to die…emanate domain to name a few.

Status: offline 		I too thought that young african american males were the highest poluation of incarcerated. Maybe not? Im not quite sure where the big gaff is in what the man said.

white dude says it and its somehow a racial bomb?

I am curious as to where you found those figures.  They do not seem to coincide with these.

I will grant they are for different years but a 400% change in just a few years does not seem logical.
Just which facts did Mr. Edwards get wrong.  That blacks are disproportionately represented in prison as compared to whites?

I hate to rain on your parade but in 1776 it was the Americans who were breaking the law...it was called treason then and it is called treason now....you are only "off the hook" if you are successful and your rebellion becomes a revolution.

...i can't see what's racist about the statement, if true, whoever says it. Something does not cease being wrong depending on the speaker. Iran arming insurgents in Iraq is equally as wrong as the USA arming insurgents in Nicaragua, for instance.
The moral high ground is not a moving target.

The stats are based on DOJ stats and census bureau stats of the 18-24 black male population. So there is a correlation between two different statistical numbers and there may be some error depending on how the info was collected. But according to those government sources, the ratio is 4 to 1.

I obviously dont think Edwards meant entirely what he said, it just came out wrong because he was trying to put the issue in perspective. He obviously thinks that it is a problem with inner-city kids. But he is wrong in saying those black kids are the only problem. There are white people and hispanics in prison as well.

Status: offline 		This just proves my point everyone in the US is way to centered in being black, white, hispanic, green, red, etc...when are projects involving all Americans are going to take ground? Common education of a common history of the whole nation not just local ethnic histories pitting of the different groups against each other? My two cents

Status: offline 		I read somewhere awhile back that the way demographic trends are going in regards to incarceration, by the year 2050 the majority of Americans will either be in prison, have been in prison, or will have an immediate family member who is in prison or been in prison.

Shoot a guy for his wallet and $20 and get life, steal a few billion from a thousand old ladies pensions and get a $100k fine and probation.

Isn't justice such a nice thing?

Oh yes, indeed. Thats the way it goes. I've heard before that people serve more time on average for drugs than they do for rape, I think it was. Its just incredible.

This makes me think of something from the other day...

I was watching the local news and some house in suburbia had been found to have pot plants growing inside it. Enough to fill every single bedroom, lol. Anyway they had some lady on saying "I just don't want this sort of thing around my neighborhood and my family" like she was talking about people eating babies or something. I thought, "Jesus Christ- we've got a slave owner on the one dollar bill and a war criminal in the White House and shes worried about somebody growing WEED?".
