Pahunkboy is an absolute idiot.  Can a man talk to a woman without oogling her tits? Yes! I do it all time, not all men are as stupid and pathetic as you Pahunkboy, real men think with their brains not their dicks.

Despite my claims that teasing is human, this strikes me as a bit beyond the point of good-natured humor.  Please, refrain.

Because it is rude.

So is pounding someone on the chest until their heart starts back up... or telling them that they need deodorant or mouthwash...

For that matter, disagreeing with Mark Twain is also 'rude'...rudeness by itself is insufficient criticism.

A faith based belief that cannot stand people who don't accept that belief, needs to grow a thicker skin, because there are always going to be critical thinkers, saying critical things about myths and superstitions...and religious beliefs.

Which is of course, God's will. [:D]

I enojoy the regulars here. If someone doesn't understand my posting style- and the cummualtive gist of my posts- , I wont let that ruin my day.  I myself have heard from mod, and I learned how to conduct myself here. Anyhow focus on the positive. Life is too short.

LadyEllen -> RE: Is God a Woman? (9/30/2007 11:53:22 AM)

Well, I guess it depends on who one asks?

Some believe me to be a woman.

Some believe me to be divine.

And some believe me to be both divine and a woman; indeed, the description Goddess has been used on occasion.

Whilst what someone might believe is important, clearly faith does not necessarily have to indicate the veracity of a belief.

But hey, if it all makes us happier.....

thinking about my earlier post- I wont take it back. Not as long as the US has so many batterred womans shelters. Even in this rural area. As for real men, ild say the civilized US has a ways to go. [albeit the very need for such shelters]

kubens -> RE: Is God a Woman? (9/30/2007 12:03:27 PM)

there's no accounting for taste.  yes, a lot of women like idiots.

velvetears -> RE: Is God a Woman? (9/30/2007 12:05:47 PM)

Being a critical thinker and being arrogantly rude are hugely different.  i am not saying people who don't believe should not challenge, i am just saying it can be done in a more dignified and respectful way.  Without the insults and ridicule.

CL, what is the difference between saying a belief is intensely stupid and the person believing it is intensely stupid?  Saying the belief is just gets you off the hook of attacking the believer.

i see nothing good natured in any of this.  i know i won't change any minds or make a difference you will all laugh it away or make some sarcastic comeback, i don't care.  Just my rant for the day.

CL, I have to say, some of what is posted about God and Christians is also "beyond the point of good-natured humor".

"religious nuts", and "intensely stupid things" come to mind.

Having said that... kubens; pahunk is not an "idiot". He's a decent enough guy, who, while I wouldn't want  him on my side in a spelling bee, I would buy him a beer if ever we met. I think a number of folks here would do the same.

You are making a judgement based on one post my judgement of you is based on two posts thus far; both negative. Calling people names is against the terms of service so don’t do it is my advice.

Dont most people envision god as an old man with a white beard? If you ask 100 random people what they think god looks like...I bet you that at least 2/3rds will say "Old man, white beard."

In African countries you’ll see images of a black Virgin Mary. People create idols in their own image not the other way around.

The true hypocrisy is all of those crucified "Kid Rocks" that garnish the churches of this wonderful land....It is a rather odd occurrence when one happens upon a vision of the Virgin Mary....That she always appears to be some 27 year old white chick...I think she might be from Indiana....What was a white chick from Indiana doing in Bethlehem in 4 BC?

Ah, so anyone who's ever done anything stupiud is, therefore, stupid, and not just one who acted stupid at the time?

I assure you, from my seat, it's rather funny, and I'm hardly a sadist.  Still, I'd like to remind you I'm making fun of the ridiculous notion of God, and the sterotypical believer, not any particular individual.

And, yeah, I know.  Religion is pretty much to comfort people, until some asshole mentions how it's all a load.  I'm pretty much acting like that guy who tells kids that Santa isn't real; I'm an ass, but a correct ass.  Still, I'm sorry, I find difficulty feeling guilty for speaking in a manner favorable to what is, to the best of our knowledge, the truth, particularly when those I'm speaking to aren't kids; hell, who here isn't older than me?

Speaking from my perspective I try not to tread on peoples beliefs sometimes I inadvertently do and I’m sorry about that. At the same time I worry that this is a kin to the nonsense that occurred when Muslims protested at the prophet Mohamed being depicted in a cartoon. You have to ask yourself what is more important: the right to have true freedom of speech which allows for ridicule or sparing someone’s religious sentimentalities. You could say the natural progression for that would be to stop religious debate altogether and just accept that a religious person is right because they said so.

For one thing having faith isn't a one time act - it is lifelong. Therefore your reasoning doesn't hold. You can say something someone did was stupid, but there is a beginning and an end to the act the person doing,  if there isn't it goes from the realm of act to the human doing it being stupid.

It's a load to you. Respect it isn't to others, that is all i am saying.  You are no better then the religous zealots who try to cram religion down a persons throat.  Just the opposite agenda.  i don't appreciate either approach.

RaynaSub -> RE: Is God a Woman? (9/30/2007 12:21:01 PM)

Trying to put your creator in a category is a bit foolish.
Most people believe that Jesus was a man.
Beyond that, this debate is a bit foolish.
To try to imagine what GOD looks like is beyond mortal man's
comprehension.

domiguy -> RE: Is God a Woman? (9/30/2007 12:22:00 PM)

I really miss the "old school" God...His newbie replacement has really been kind of a pussy...Where are the people turned into pillars of salt?....Cities obliterated for defying God's will?...Is one fucking burning bush to much to ask for?  God why have you forsaken me?...and why have you turned into such a complete puss?  I have received information from several reliable sources that God watches Grey's anatomy.

"religious nut" was an attempt at citing individuals not involved in the conversation; religious extremists, as to avoid directly insulting those present.

"intensely stupid things" is something, though, I do find to be of good nature as it is not an exagerration to promote a point but an earnest assessment.  I.. have some rather.. extensive.. reasonings for this choice of words.  This said, I'm entirely open to hearing exactly why making the assumption of God isn't intensely stupid, perferably without the use of circular logic.

i am not saying accept they are right.  i am just saying no one wants to be ridiculed for what they believe and hold dear in their lives. i don't care if to others it is all an illusion or something they think is non existent. Speak your mind - yell from the roof tops you don't believe in god, just respect that others do and don't have to prove a damn thing to anyone else to have the right to believe.

Debate is fine, but once terms like - stupid, idiotic etc are tossed around it is no longer debate but rather pontification cloaked as debate.  People who use this tactic - well the term - "doth think you protest too much" - comes to mind.  What is the fear? Certainly your not concerned that so many religious followers are going down the wrong path you just have to show them the true way?

LadyEllen -> RE: Is God a Woman? (9/30/2007 12:29:48 PM)

Here's the thing right, as told us to by science-

one day, the sun will stop working, expand and make the earth uninhabitable, before shrinking to almost nothing.

Now, if that doesnt get us - if we somehow manage to produce some means of escape from the neighbourhood -

the Andromeda galaxy is at this very moment hurtling towards our own and will one day collide with ours. Seeing as how we have to now escape not only our own solar system but our galaxy, that means of escape we came up with to avoid the sun's demise had best be really good

So, now assuming we escaped all this catastrophe we're adrift in inter-galactic space with no knowing where to go - and right now at least not knowing if we can even get somewhere (assuming the universe to be expanding) or whether it's all a waste of time (and space) if we get to know that the universe is contracting.

The point is, whether one prefers science or faith - we're all fucked by the measurements of either. None of this shit matters.

All that matters is living a good life and being happy, and if it helps someone to do that by way of believing in quarks, fairies or the jolly green giant, it doesnt matter.

E
