Debate is fine, but once terms like - stupid, idiotic etc are tossed around it is no longer debate but rather pontification cloaked as debate.  People who use this tactic - well the term - "doth think you protest too much" - comes to mind.  What is the fear? Certainly your not concerned that so many religious followers are going down the wrong path you just have to show them the true way?

People are sometimes passionate about what they say and so this results in the ridicule of those that don’t share their perspective. Call me an idiot for thinking no one knows the first thing about God, I don’t care. So why should a religious person care if they get called an idiot too for their beliefs? If no one else can understand them, why not just rise above it? You know best after all.

Pahunkboy is an absolute idiot.  Can a man talk to a woman without oogling her tits? Yes! I do it all time, not all men are as stupid and pathetic as you Pahunkboy, real men think with their brains not their dicks.

Despite my claims that teasing is human, this strikes me as a bit beyond the point of good-natured humor.  Please, refrain.

ok,  I will refrain, but I just didn't like seeing all men being insulted in this way.

For one thing having faith isn't a one time act - it is lifelong. Therefore your reasoning doesn't hold.

Really, now?  Did you know I'm a Knight of the Catholic Church?  Oddly enough, many Catholics don't even know that the rite still exists.  The Bishop of my discese- which I can no longer spell- knighted me for examiplary service.  I can safely say that I held some level of faith.  Do you detect this faith still in me?

You can say something someone did was stupid, but there is a beginning and an end to the act the person doing,  if there isn't it goes from the realm of act to the human doing it being stupid.

You seem to view a human as singularly defined by an aspect of their world view?

It's a load to you. Respect it isn't to others, that is all i am saying.  You are no better then the religous zealots who try to cram religion down a persons throat.  Just the opposite agenda.  i don't appreciate either approach.

Yeah.  Making a joke about the silliness of making blind assumptions.  That's definately a zealot for you.  I tell you, each and every day, I wake up in the morning, and I say to myself, "CuriousLord, how can you destroy religion a bit more today?"

But, hey.  If you chose to see me as being a zealot, you're adopting a new, silly belief, and I'll warn you right now, I reserve the right to tease you about it, too.  ;)

---

A bit of laughs asside, I realize people carry an emotional investment in religion.  I'm.. sorry if I hurt your feelings?  Please, don't carry an emotional investment in something that you have no reason to believe is true.  Doing these sorts of things is likely to force force you to either maintain the delusion, to whatever costs it may force on you, or suffer the pain of debasing everything you've pinned down as being reliant on this assumption.

hardbodysub -> RE: Is God a Woman? (9/30/2007 12:39:33 PM)

Peale had some good ideas, but he was stuck in a concept of God that our society has drilled into most of us. The brainwashing usually begins at a very early age, and it permeates virtually everything in our lives.

There is some evidence that prayer really has some positive effects. Unfortunately, many take this as proof that faith in the Christian God is the "correct" faith. Well, wake up folks, meditation has some very positive effects also. In fact, strong belief in virtually anything tends to give an individual direction and hope in their lives. A lot of people have turned their lives around in a positive way because of religion, but that doesn't mean that the specific theology deserves the credit. Finding another route to a higher purpose or meaning in life could be just as beneficial.

All that matters is living a good life and being happy, and if it helps someone to do that by way of believing in quarks, fairies or the jolly green giant, it doesnt matter.

[sm=applause.gif] Thank you

By understanding science, we grow to understand the world.  We can make things- cars, TV's, medicines, etc.  Things that, by and large, despite some bitching, do make us happier.  We live longer, we know more, we see more, and, you know what?  I have a full set of teeth.  Try to do that without science!  ;)

My point is, relying on false things just to make yourself happy will, in the end, betray you whenever you actually need to use whatever you believe in to make a decision.

And, to be blunt.. some of us just aren't happy unless we know that the things we believe in are the truth.

pahunkboy -> RE: Is God a Woman? (9/30/2007 12:42:52 PM)

in reply: any guy that can speak to a lady w/o ogling.. will get further. even if that woman is spoken for she has girlfriends who may be single.

so- if you are able to do this you are ahead of the competition. tho some woman do go after men that are mean or immature.

one thing i dont understand is how alot of men proport to want a nice girl; but if the woman is a few lbs heavy they dont consider her.  the skinny model thing is fake. i would not want to be a woman. it would be uncomfortable; and there is always the fear of rape.

i wish everyone could be happy. there is plenty of blame to go around.

CL, I have to say, some of what is posted about God and Christians is also "beyond the point of good-natured humor".

"religious nuts", and "intensely stupid things" come to mind.

"religious nut" was an attempt at citing individuals not involved in the conversation; religious extremists, as to avoid directly insulting those present.

"intensely stupid things" is something, though, I do find to be of good nature as it is not an exagerration to promote a point but an earnest assessment.  I.. have some rather.. extensive.. reasonings for this choice of words.  This said, I'm entirely open to hearing exactly why making the assumption of God isn't intensely stupid, perferably without the use of circular logic.

If "intensely stupid things" is the best phrase you can come up with to express your "earnest assessment", then your analysis appears to be shallow and self-serving. I suggest you hone your rhetorical skills if you wish to persuade rather than alienate.

I'm a hardcore atheist and I feel my beliefs are well reasoned. I don't feel a need to defend them. Still, if someone were to refer to my beliefs as "intensely stupid", I'd consider that person rude. Being rude is a matter of personal choice, I guess. It's legal to burp and fart in restaurants, and it's legal to express bigotry toward another's spirituality, but I think those behaviors show a lack of...something...I'm not sure what. Character? Class? Compassion? I view such behavior as arrogant. Not the cool kind of arrogance, though.

Now, can we please get back to our discussion of ogling women's tits? Stay on topic, people!!

Bob

If god were female, she would have attached men`s dicks,to their chins.

FullCircle -> RE: Is God a Woman? (9/30/2007 1:19:47 PM)

She thought about that but then she realised she’d have to talk to his penis all the time in everyday conversation and it would wobble about as he talked, not nice.

Well, it may not be wobbling about, but it's still what you're talking to, albeit less directly.

God doesn't need a construct such as gender!

As a card carrying lesbian (albeit I will never earn the treasured golden star) I am just going to be kind and mention that you are new, therefor VERY clueless as to pahunk's nature of intent. Which is causing you to make a fool of yourself. I adore him and believe him to be one of the kindest and least abrasive people that participate on these forums.

Just thought I would give you a chance to quit digging that hole for yourself there.

NOW, Domiguy.......you've made me laugh several times today on several threads and you know how much I love to laugh. SO, I am offering you a place as my naughty little bitchboy when I dress up in my full black nun's habit and carry a ruler. (thanks for making my Sunday even better)

Edited to add........I view god as a genderless energy that links all things....just my point of view....attack at will. My panties will stay unbunched, cuz I am just like that.

How is my personal view of religion as being intensely stupid unusually self-serving?

I say "unususally" since I do acknowledge that it is self-serving in a common respect.  Such as, to acknowledge that you have $10 in your wallet is self-serving because, well, you know you have ten bucks to spend; therefore, acknowledging it helps you to better understand the situation, and therefore serves one.

The post this is from is one talking about the human nature to tease things.  This was not an attempt to persuade about the religious point of view.

I suppose this part of your rant is a consquence of taking the above comment out of context as well.
