Woman dies after Phoenix airport arrest

A woman late to her plane became irate, was put in handcuffs and was later found dead in a holding cell, police said. Authorities were investigating Saturday if the woman choked herself while trying to get free from the handcuffs.
Carol Ann Gotbaum, 45, of New York, was arrested Friday at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport after a conflict with gate crews who refused to allow her to board a plane, said Sgt. Andy Hill, a Phoenix police spokesman.

The airline said the plane was already preparing to depart. She was rebooked on the next flight, but "she became extremely irate, apparently running up and down the gate area," US Airways spokesman Derek Hanna said Saturday.

Officers handcuffed her and took her to the holding room, where she kept screaming, authorities said. Hill said officers checked on her when she stopped screaming and found her unresponsive.

Hill said it appears Gotbaum may have tried to get out of her handcuffs, became tangled in the process and the cuffs ended up around her neck. A cause of death will be determined by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner.

"She was very agitated and irate and angry," Hill said. "These are the things that led to the disorderly conduct arrest."

Authorities said neither a Taser nor pepper spray was used on the woman.

Sheesh, she freaked out over a missed flight?
But,...but,...didn't she have the "right" to hold up that flight?

If it’s a holding room then why were the handcuffs required? It seems a bit irresponsible to leave someone handcuffed and alone in that state of mind anyway. They need to review their procedures. Also they’d have to consider if it was suicide, seems a bit odd someone was so distraught about missing a plane unless missing that plane was a crucial event in her life for some unknown reason.

All I can think of is that they must not have been conventional handcuffs. They were likely two locking bracelets attached by a fairly long chain. Otherwise I'm like you, wondering how the...

I'm still trying to visualize how thats even possible.

Maybe it was deliberate? I'm stumped.

airports are a hastle. i can see why she was upset. it doesnt say whay tarnspired up to that point. anyhow- i choose to drive then to deal with unreliable flights. esp since getting to harrisburg airport is a puzzle. you cant miss the turn off to the turn off to the turn off.

Good god, that woman is talented and incredibly stupid.  Two words: DARWIN AWARD.

krikket -> RE: Woman Chokes Herself To Death On Handcuffs??? (9/30/2007 8:37:13 AM)

I heard about this one on the news last night.  They didn't offer an explaination either, just stated that the "incident" was under investigation.  I've already told my kids that if they ever refer to my death as an "incident"  I'll come back and haunt 'em.  LOL!

I was wondering what kind of handcuffs were used too, since none of the initial story made sense to me.

Confused

How about this hypothesis.

She was choked to death by some retard who thought they could apply a choke-hold safely.

Indeed. I am thinking murdered by the police also.

Gosh when i worked with the retarded i found it was best to clear the way when they went off. eventually they would snap out of it; and we could return to the day.

I am a social worker now with developmentally disabled and MR ( I won't get into the difference here), having worked in medicine prior to this, and I am in complete agreement with backing off. In fact one of the first things learned, and law enforcement should be taught the same, is to make sure the area is safe and back away until the 'episode' has passed. Even without being DD or MR, anyone that upset should be moved away from, not even spoken to, until the 'storm' has passed. Many times I have had to do this to keep myself and my clients safe. Maybe not for some, but for me it is pure common sense not to screw with anyone in that state. This woman, I'm assuming, did not have a gun and was not a huge threat but more causing a large commotion. This is why we do not use restraint any longer which is illegal in most states and ANY restraint used to protect one's self if used longer than 5 minutes is considered an abusive and illegal restaint. Yes, law enforcement has a different set where they are allowed to use cuffs but hell, I would cuff long enough to have myself and the individual in a safe environment and then REMOVE them! DUH!!

Be Well,

EG

Are you going to let law enforcement borrow your magical X-ray/mind reading helmet, so they can instantly and flawlessly (i.e. no case file, no intake assessment, no diagnostic work) tell the difference between someone harmless in distress, and someone about to produce weapons and go on a rampage?

Because, believe it or not, they don't really cover that in the academy.[;)]

Please read my edited post and just as a by the way I am well aware of what the academy does and does not teach. Intakes and assessments are not necessary to know what is dangerous and what is a problem/huge chaos with someone who is more than 'irate' as has been quoted in the media. The police academy in this state at least, I do not know of others, does have a psychology component though not very in depth. You don't think someone in my line of work, and my employees who do not have degrees or any real training to speak of, do not have to make snap decisions when all training goes out the window anyway and common sense has to be a guide?

I possess no x-ray helmet though I wish I did at times as I never know when someone is going to go dangerously ''off.''

Thank you!

EG

Chances are she was left cuffed to keep her from hurting herself. How long she was left unattended is not mentioned, so it may have been a few minutes, and she might have been in such a state that she did a lot of damage very quickly.
More likely than not, she was cuffed with those plastic wrist locks, not actual metal cuffs, and in trying to get her hands out form behind her back, she got them around her neck and a combination of getting her shirt bunched up and the cuffs keeping her hands pinned, I can see it happening.
I cant say, though, how it is the investigation might go.  On the one hand, leaving her alone to cool off for a few minutes probably seemed like the right idea at the time, but that might lead to being irresponsable...
