I can understand saying that submission is somewhat like a religion, but to insinuate that a dominant is his submissive's God is going a bit far.

Oh yeah? Why?

We have an interesting term for Dommes I hear often called "Goddess". Is this attempt at divinity and worship okie dokie while a male taking this disposition is a "little too extreme" since he is brushing up against the big male G word of the Christian patriarchy that dominates American society?

So...some guy has a kink for labeling himself as "God"? Why is that any less repugnant than a female taking on the label of "Goddess"? Perhaps because we dont take the idea of female divinity seriously?

Sure, a dominant can be a God to his slave without it going to far if you define "God" as a concept that human beings beleive in, find inspiration in, and submit their lives to the image of in an attempt to strive to improve and be better?

If one replace the pop culture phrase of "What would Jesus do?" with "What would Master do?", then in a sense, a dominant can very much be like a god to a submissive. Someone she is inspired by and strives to improve and grow in his image.

One can take all the details and aspects of spiritual service and worship to a diety and apply it to a Master, but dont call it the "G" word....unless they are a chick

I look at a dom as a human being, not God because we can all make mistakes.

Hey, the big Guy has made a couple of mistakes too if you take the Bible literally... [:D]

It doesn;'t offend me personally, and I am christian. But I do find it completely ridiculous and childish on the master's part.

Would you say the same of the all too common label of Godess?

I just thought this was an interesting question because I've had two Masters recently make comments like "submission is a religion and the Dom is god", and they seem to really get off on the idea of being "worshipped". I've never heard anyone go as far as saying they ARE God, but the indirect comparison seems to be made. Do people think that is acceptable? Would it be going too far?

Not in my book.

Valyraen is not God and has no pretense of being a God. This is part of why I am not allowed to give pronouns referring to him, or other masters, a capital letter. Anyone thinking they are God, or expecting me to treat them as such, would be shown the door. I have no time for people suffering from delusions of grandeur.

I personally dont see how a personal style of service and worship equates automatically with a megalomaniac.

Tops who have a 'god complex' need help.  M/s is NOT my religion, I don't believe in orginized religion, so any partner of mine who THINKS they are a god is gonna get laughed at.  I do NOT worship MJ, if I did, He would have me comitted or worse, lol.  He would start going through my inhalers, medications, vitamins and have blood tests run looking for any and every drug known {giggles}.  It's not who I am to 'worship' someone.  I was taught the 10 Commandments as I was growing up; I keep that in mind {not worshipign false gods or idols}, I believe in a Higher Power or Being or Diety, I use the word 'God' because its comfortable.  Do I worship MJ? Nope.  Do I enjoy focusing on Him and spending time pleasing Him ? Yes. MJ is NOT my religion.  He is my Master, my Partner and my Friend among other tihngs, NOT my 'god.'

MadRabbit -> RE: Is it ok for a Master to compare himself with God? (10/11/2007 9:24:26 PM)

So will anyone else be contributing opinions to this thread that doesnt consist of negative assumption, condemnation of personal style and kink, and a fixation solely on the "G" word with no abstract thought to this concept?

Or should I just stop reading now?

Expression of opinions is all cool, but the "Its just stupid" opinions do tend to give me some pause.

Archer -> RE: Is it ok for a Master to compare himself with God? (10/11/2007 10:25:02 PM)

I have often discussed with people something along this line, when I talk about knowing when I'm getting too confident. Personally I talk about the difference between channeling God and being one.
When I go from feeling I am channeling the divine to actually being divine, that's when trouble is just around the corner.

But hey that's what works for me.

Neala -> RE: Is it ok for a Master to compare himself with God? (10/11/2007 10:42:37 PM)

If your Master/Dom/sub/slave is building a shrine in your image and killing chickens in your name...you should worry.

I once met a fellow who couldn't grasp the concept that he wasn't my 'higher power.' He thought that any token of my religion showed him disrespect because I was putting other things before him. Mind you, I'm an intelligent gal and this caused me to run faster than you can say 'crazy.' I can't even begin to picture a situation where my would be Master would be my God and for me to treat him as such. Religion is not a huge part of my life but it is there to stay. Any man that claims to be a God better be prepared to walk on water...'cause I'll want proof.

welllllllllllll............ I am not God...

But.... if my girls are good.. they get to rub the Buddha!  *w*

rofl......

I would be concerned about anyone that truly believed in the comparison, however, using the analogy or the term "worship" doesn't necessarily mean they think of themselves as gods.  As a sub, I want to worship my Dom.  However, in my opinion, what makes a good Dom/me is the same as what makes a good leader and a large part of that is being able to accept your own faults and accept responsibility for them.  The I AM DOM HEAR ME ROAR types tend to never do that.

Isn't "god" a subjective term? We all have our own demons and gods. They are not the same thing to anyone else.

If something/someone is a god to you, then who is anyone else to tell you that you're right or wrong?

You'll find there are very few universal sacreds in wiitwd. Pain often ties in very closely with my spirituality and that's usually brought about through the practice of S/m. Himself is the conduit that helps me to get to that place where I can explore the universe. Without him, I'm resigned to life on Earth.. with him, I get to touch the stars. It's much better than an acid trip. ::winks:: In a nutshell, if you want to call your dominant God, feel free. I do because to me he is a god.. he's just not 'the' God.

While I do find the idea of someone roleplaying being a God/Goddess, and enacting a ritual to be extremely Hawt!  I have to agree with kittensmailbox about ego trips.  While I believe that as we were made by the Gods,(or Great Spirit,Allah,Jehovah, whatever term you feel comfy with.)and that therefore we are partly divine, we are not infallible.

So are the real McCoy slaves and submissives incarnations of respectively the Goddess of Slaves and the God of Submissives. Those doms would do well to recognize the divinity of their slave or submissive.

There is no such thing as God and here is the proof:  Watch the show.
In those days pregnant women not married were stoned to death so they lied to save her life, it's that simple.  Oh yeah, the earth isn't flat either.  Did we believe that too?

Don't tell me you don't know people used to believe thousands of years ago the earth was flat and if you travelled too far you would fall off and be gone forever.

THERE IS NO GOD PEOPLE.

Check out how the bathroom smells after they use it. Chances are they aren't a god.

iammachine -> RE: Is it ok for a Master to compare himself with God? (10/12/2007 12:37:53 AM)

I am the child of two former Catholics, that being, I was raised atheist. The extent of my background in religion is any independant research that I have done out of idle curiousity. I have no reservations when it comes to matter of religious icons or references.

I have answered by the name of a goddess since young adulthood. A friend of mine gave me the name when I was a young teenager, it stayed, and I have come to personally identify with that name more than my birth or legal names (yep, they're different, and that's a big hassle). This makes some people uncomfortable, for which I am respectful of their feelings but have no resolution for their discomfort.

I don't compare anything to religion. That said, I am rather tongue-in-cheek about things that may seem to be references to religious topics. I have no qualms being referred to as a deity, and I like being "worshipped". A friend made a playful moto for me, _my name here_: 50% Goddess + 50% Machine = 100% World Domination. [:D] I have a keychain that says "We'll get along just find as soon as you realize that I'm god."  I mean no disrespect to anyone's choice of faith in any of these things. In the same right, as religion is not particularly important to me, I do not feel apprehensive at all about being rather playful in tossing the word "god" around.

To some, words have great power. For me, a word only has as much power as you lend it to have. Is my behaviour hubris? To some, maybe. I'm fine with that.

Brain, remember that is only your opinion. people get annoyed when you try to press your views on others. **smiles**
