ORIGINAL: philosophy ...not having read Gore's autobiography i was not aware of his having cut the number of ships in the US navy. Thanks for the heads up. Mind you, i'm not sure how that makes him directly responsible for the deaths of people aboard the USS Cole......wouldn't the terrorists have a piece of that? However, on the point you make regarding the use of the film in classrooms......all history is, to some extent, partisan. All criticism of literature is, of necessity, biased by the mind of the author. Basically, it seems to me, that as long as Gore's film is accompanied by explanatory notes it has value in a classroom setting. I don't doubt that there is indeed value in watching it, I was just amused by the timing of the conflicting 'awards'. As far as the Cole goes, of course I don't see any indication of Gore directly causing the explosion... But someone in his position, who knew or should have known about the trial runs against other ships of the same class in the same situation (unsecured ports), and who knew the security reasons behind replenishment at sea, but still brags about dismantling the practice, can hardly be thought of as blameless. Sometimes politicians make a decision for political gain, and the consequences suck for other people... this appears to be such a case.
