How could someone catch you, hold you in place, and tie intricate knots all at once? It's never successfully happened to me.
sounds like a challenge to me...

I guess I just don't understand rope. I'm really good at getting out of it, first of all,
Then you have not been tied up properly.

and secondly, don't you just have to sit/lie/stand etc in position while they do it? How could someone catch you, hold you in place, and tie intricate knots all at once?
It is all about slipknots for the takedown.  Once they have one hand, it is easy to get the other and lash them together.  Especially when there's a knee on your back.  Trust me, I'm a fighter, and it still works.  Cuffs initially while rope is being put in place also works.  Mmmmm damn, it has been too long.

Soft rope. Chain always feels ice cold and I can't tolerate cold very well.

Yaay, so glad you posted it!   Mmmm, I love the way you feel rope snug all the way around your skin.  The abrasiveness when you struggle.  Sometimes the flexibility, illusion of possible escape.  The cutting into the skin.  Oh, and the personal nature.  It takes quite a bit of effort to tie someone up really well.  It is very intimate, whether it is a takedown, or an intricate shibari pose you have to hold still for.  Feeling the effort and skill involved.  Anyone can slap on a pair of shackles or cuffs and laugh, but knotwork, and knowing joints and anatomy for good rope bondage is much more personal.  That is why I love rope!

Edited to add: And I like natural fiber rope!  Made by hand with skill and love.  Not the slippery synthetic stuff.  And the symbolism and history of shibari/kinbaku fascinate me, though I don't know much now, I'm intrigued to keep learing, it mesmerizes me.  Okay, I'm just a Shibari/kinbaku slut.

i agree and am quite facinated with Shibari myself~

Have to admit, the feel of cold hard handcuffs does something to me.

That being said, I agree with what's been said about chains sometimes being limiting, and rope far more flexible. But chains are so... severe... and yummy.

I'm rather surprised no one has yet mentioned silk: nice silk ties or scarfs. Such a nice feel on the skin, yet so tough and unforgiving when one pulls against it. Also has the added benefit or rarely leaving marks on the skin no matter how hard it is pulled against. Depending upon on job and "real life" this can sometimes be very important. Trust me, having to wear long sleeves in 90+ degree heat when you work a relatively active job because of cuff marks on your wrist is no fun!

This question is UNFAIR! This is like asking a kid which candy do they like? They'll like em all I guarantee it! I like the both, different situations call for different uses of both.

I'm a rope slut, plain and simple. Mentioning rope is kind of like lighting up the bat signal for me.

I've used leather restraints, and I've used hospital restraints, and I dig 'em for down and dirty "hold still, damnit". I can't say that I have experience with chain, though it doesn't give me tinglies.

Rope, on the other hand.... *happy place*

Ever heard of hojojutsu?

That's a rather common misconception about rope. If I'm not too concerned about being Little Miss Bondage Fancy Pants, I can have someone bound (gyaku ebi, harness and all) and definitely not going anywhere in under ten minutes. Ten minutes, to me, isn't an eternity. Basic wrist/ankle binds I can throw in my sleep in a couple-few minutes and again, you're probably not slipping out of 'em.

I am by no means Ms. Thang of rope bondage, but if you have a fairly basic understanding of what you're doing, and the human body, it's not too difficult to have your bottom pwned.

Hello all,

I finally have a few minutes on collarme and i thought of a silly question that could be fun to hear the answers to so here goes....

I was having a discussion with Tigrita about ropes and chains and it got me curious. For all you submissives/slaves do you have a preference for what binds you? If so why? Same for the Dominant folk. Does one or the other make you feel extra excited about restraining whoever you are restraining and why?

Tigrita definitely loves rope and hearing her talk about it made me realize that i prefer chains or metal cuffs by far. I mean, if bound with rope i will be all happy that i'm bound but when restrained by cuffs or chains it is a whole new sensation. I love the metal, the complete rigidity. I love the sound, the weight of the chains against my body and the coolness against my skin. Master just bought some chains and when he asked which ones i liked i ran for the almost comical most thick ones in the store. Of course then i ran into someone i knew while looking like Marley from the Christmas Carol as i toted them around the rest of the store with a big smile on my face. I don't know but something about the metal just makes me melt.

What about the rest of you?

charlotte

Charlotte,

I'm with you on the chains and steel.  There's something about the way they don't yield, at all.  With all but the best rope bondage, if you twist and squirm enough, you can work your way loose.  But when the chains and the locks go on, you know you're not getting out of it until the person with the keys LETS you out of it (unless, of course, you've got a pair of bolt cutters handy and enough mobility to be able to use them.)

There's also the time factor.  To do really effective restraint with rope is time consuming.  With chains and locks, it takes very little time.

Heavy bottom that I am, I want to get to the torture, ASAP.

That being said, let me add that Service Bottom that I am, if I'm playing with a Top who really enjoys doing intricate rope bondage, I certainly won't object.  I've found that for me, the main difference between a good scene and a great scene is how much fun the Top has doing it.

Well...

I work with rope, and I have quite a nice collection of different kinds of rope, mostly in blood red but I do have some white cotton rope that's quite nice. I have some fabulous leather bondage straps, and of course the cuffs, shackles, and hobbles... but still... <happy sigh>...

For me, chain is definitely *it*... the cool feel when you drape it across a submissive's back, the sound--oh, the sound!--and the absolute inescapability of it... yummy!

Yes, you have to have a few accoutrements to really adjust it to your submissive's body, but if you have that hardware, there's nothing like it.

Leather cuffs, and chain, please. I've done rope, and I'm always distracted by the length of time it takes to put on and take off... the fact that I can almost always work my way free... the discomfort of feeling it tighten where it shouldn't.... but leather and metal... no way out of that. It never cinches on me, and if I can't reach the buckles, or have the key to the pads, well...   I can relax.

i want ropes and leather and metal...but i am greedy like that....

not really sure what it is about any of them that makes them so hot for me...but i know that metal holds a special place for me...my older brother obsessively collects the tabs off coke cans and puts them in buckets and when ever i can i will submerge my hands or feet in the tabs...oooo if i could get a bath tub full of those things and just submerge my whole body in it....i would be in heaven...you would have to pry me out of there...yep yep....and i do large metal sculpture...i've tried doing art wit other mediums including things that involved leather and rope...and it just doesn't do it for me the way that metal does...and i can sleep so much better with steel or another metal collar around my neck than with a leather collar...sighs....

so umm i vote for metal if i have to choose...

Bondage in any shape or form is delish but there is just something about rope feels great against the skin. For me half of the fun is the amount of time it takes to be tied... puts me right in the zone.

Rope is right up there with... I don't know what it is called... a mental bondage of sorts. Tell me where and how. It is so very hard to accomplish, especially if you are being toyed with.  *purrr*  And then it is leather. I love how it feels as it warms to the body, sort of molds around you. And last but not least, metal. I have very limited experience with metal and chains so that, of course, may change in the future.

chelle, have you seen this 5 gum commercial?  I thought it was so incredibly hot when I saw it.  With your 'submerged in metal' fetish already, it will probably make you cum: http://www.duncans.tv/2007/new-5-gum-stimulate-your-senses it is the first video as you scroll down the page.

Enjoy!

...just something about the clink-itty clank-itty things....hearing and feeling .. the weight....more senses going.....
leather AND clanking is even better...mmmmmmm

but then again, I don't have much personal experience with ropes...so maybe my vote is pre-mature

I love the sound and weight of chain, but I only use rope against the skin. Using leather restraints with chain bindings is my favorite combination for controlling someone, but I consider rope to be more "bondagey" and aesthetically pleasing.
