Good luck to all that are dealing with the fires in Southern California.
It is always sad and devasting to watch, and I hope and pray all here are okay.

I've been seeing it off and on all day from CNN. It is immense in size, and jeez the amount of damage that will be done  .

Used to live in the San Diego area & have some emails out asking about past friends and some relatives living near the fire area.  Been near a few big fires & it gives me the willies to see big ones like this...

www.signonsandiego.com  is the Union Tribune's website and they are carrying breaking news on the fire.  Some pages are timing out or a very slow, but it's a good source of news.

thornhappy, hoping all are well!

I was just going to post on it but I was watching it on CNN.
What a disaster.
One Fire Cheif said it's the worst he's seen in 36 years on the Dept!
And there are more fires breaking out due to the high winds carrying the embers.
They said Air National Guard tanker planes are flying to Calif from North Carolina and Wyoming.
If I lived in that area I'd have a swimming pool full of water and a portable fire pump with a 1 3/4 inch discharge line like the F.D.

It is so stressful, all that loss, and threat of loss. I have been on the phone with mutual friends in SD and LA county. Everyone is ok so far, although some evacs are necessary. I made my home available to a couple of friends if they need to land for a few days.

I lost my home to one of the Ca fires many years ago and know exactly what it feels like.

It was over 93 here today, and ash is falling like snow.

Tomorrow is supposed to be hotter and by the weekend it will cool way down. Cross your fingers folks!

Mz Mia, thanks for starting this thread. Domi-guy, one of your friends had to evac *spanks his large whatever*
poppeye: I promised myself that if I ever lived in a super high fire zone again...I'd have a water pump and stick one end in the ocean.

One of the biggest problems has been palm trees and trees with bark beetle infestation and not enough tree cutters available to cut those fire-happy-sick trees down. They are backed up two years because of the high demand in Ca. Also, I cannot believe that people still have wood shake roofs on their houses instead of converting.

It must be difficult to live in that area right now, even if you don't have to evacuate.
I have been following the fires since last week, it is really sad and scary how fast it is spreading.
Ugh, you can smell the smoke?
I hope it does not spread any closer to you, good luck.

Hello Irish, yes I know about Domi's friend that had to evacuate.
I just realized how close it was to her yesterday.
I am glad you are out of harm's way and providing a much needed
shelter.
It must suck to have evacuate and stay in a shelter right now.

They said all the hotels/motels in inner L.A. are full.
Also ones to the north in Santa Barbara.
If I had to get out of the area I'd keep driving east to Las Vegas and stay there for a week or so.

The fires are an ugly fact of life here.  When the Santa Anna winds blow, all you can do is get away and pray.  I normally keep track of the fires on a really good site by the California Department of Forestry, but that has been down or very slow all day.  Here is some local news coverage http://www.knbc.com/index.html .

My sister and one of my nephews is down there - each in seperate counties.  Both say they have to stay inside - it's too hard to breathe.  Nephew almost had to evacuate but the fire took a turn in direction so it's wait and see at this point.  Everyone has their bags packed, just in case.  From what they're saying, traffic is awful.

An aunt of mine had to evacuate during the Tahoe fires, a few months back.  Stressful stuff for those folks.

Now they're saying on the News that more than 600 homes have been destroyed!
And, there are 10,000 people in Chargers Stadium taking refuge.

Thank you Mz. Mia and the other folks who have expressed concern.
I have been on the phone with friends down in SoCal offering space if
they need to evacuate.  The Web site that Heretic listed states that
3 fires may merge by Wednesday and that the Governator has declared a state
of emergency in 7 counties, asking for assistance from other states, the military and the Federal Gov.

Yes.... there is at least one regular board participant and maybe another who live just south of the fires in Malibu - My thoughts are with them.

I found an operating site with a bit more information.  Two fires are now going in the San Bernardino mountains, east of LA.  There are actual forests to burn up there.  So far the San Gabriel's, which could impact my area under these conditions, are ok.  If that changes, we'll need crews from the whole west coast to get it under control.

For anybody with a serious interest (morbid or otherwise), fire up Google Earth, fly to "mint canyon rd agua dulce ca," and then scroll from a comfortable height and angle to the wsw.  That is roughly the path of the Buckweed fire.  If the winds don't drop, that one could burn all the way to the ocean.

Let's hope so....my father just had a ten thousand sqft home built at the base of the San Gabriel's.....and for it to burn up surely wouldn't help his elevated blood pressure

Mia.

Much love from So Cal. We were evac'd out of the Witch Creek fire area at around 8 this morning and it is amazing what you find is truly important to pack when given 10 minutes to do so. Luckily I had packed a couple suitcases the night before so I was ahead on that aspect. Its also amazing what you thought important to pack and what was left behind. For some reason it seemed reasonable to pack a bulk pack of pantyhose but I forgot my toothbrush completely. Right now I would give about anythign to get this nasty grit and smoke taste out of my mouth.

I stayed with a friend on the other side of my town and then we were evacd completely out of the area at 5pm. We just spent a grueling 6 hours traveling up the 5 to Dana Point. A trip that would normally take 45 min to an hour. It was like a blizzard but with an orange sky and intense heat. Truly almost a surreal experience and I'm not quite sure I'm actually even realizing it now. I'm exhausted, hyped, sick, giddy and in shock.

I dont know at this point if I even have a house left standing. I probably won't for a couple days at least. I spoke with a neighbor a couple hours ago and was told that as of 5pm the house was purportedly still standing but the neighbor on the left was in full burn. I was on the roof at 4 am soaking my roof and the neighbor on the right with the hose, so hopefully it was still damp enough to ward off the flying embers. So far we seem to be out of harms way and will stay here until we're cleared for safety to see what the damage is and if the house is still standing.

I'll be honest though. I don't know if it really matters if it is or not. It's a house and the things within it are replaceable. The things that aren't replaceable are here surrounding me now. I'm safe, surrounded by such wonderful friends, my sweet whippet chloe is snuggled on the bed beside me. I have the pictures that can bever be taken again with me, a few books that could never be replaced as well and a suitcase or so of clothes. I have everything important to me, so it doesn't really matter what's left when I get home.

PS. Domi, infortunately I had to leave behind the autographed 8x10 of the Domidong. perhaps when things settle again you'll send another? Thanks that would be fab.

Which we woulld have dearly loved to have done. Unfortunately the 15 interstate has been closed to all but emergency crews all day for the most part. No other way to get there. this isn't the time to try to get on those little 2 lane byways and find yourself stuck and surrounded by melted road and a ridge line of fire.
