A drop in violence around Iraq has cut burials in the huge Wadi al Salam cemetery here by at least one-third in the past six months, and that’s cut the pay of thousands of workers who make their living digging graves, washing corpses or selling burial shrouds.

    Will the suffering never end???

(You can laugh, or you can scream.  I've made my choice about this one.)

Yep - this is Bush's fault too, just like hurricanes, the high cost of housing, dropping housing prices and that melting glacier in Sisters, Oregon.

You are just making stuff up Heretic, I have been told hundreds of times in here that it is getting worse every day, and is a complete failure.

Nope, it's just that the Sectarian Cleansing is just about done.

All the Sunnis have been killed or driven out of the Shia areas.

Likewise, all the Shias have been killed or driven out of the Sunni Areas.

So, we're still at 17%. A complete and total failure of Bush's Policy and the Surge Strategy.

17%? That's nice. You couldn't take polls under Saddam's regime though, because anyone who was caught sharing a contrarian thought was slowly fed through the tire shredders, feet first. That's after their family was brutally raped in front of them. And of course there wasn't any sectarian violence; everyone was massacred equally. No one could have cell phones, or internet connections...

Ah, yes. The good old days of Saddam Hussein. Take a pot shot at him, and lose your village. There's nothing worse than change, absolutely nothing.

If this is the result of the troop surge (as opposed to the success of the sectarian terror campaign) then, still, what's to be smug about? It only took... what, 4 years for the administration to finally admit that things weren't going as well as they planned and that maybe they should have put more people on the ground like the CIA had recommended in the first damn place?

Yes, Saddam was a ruthless dictator and the Baath party should have been deposed (perhaps back when Bush Sr. was making the decisions, instead of withdrawing and leaving our allies in the region to be tortured and slaughtered). That doesn't magically mean the occupation hasn't been one long string of incredible fuck-ups.

World War II was one long string of incredible fuck ups too. HISTORY has been one long string of incredible fuck ups. So, what's your point? That everything should always go perfectly?

Yeah, the U.S. certainly fucked-up the occupations of Japan and Germany, eh? What with the failure to rebuild their infrastructures and all the money going into that disappearing, the loss of  1,000's more American soldier's lives during the OCCUPATIONS than during the actual war...

Seriously, what is your point? "Well, things aren't going well. Sometimes they don't. C'est la vie! Why should anyone be held accountable?" Is that your argument?

The Surge has doubtless played a role in this, probably as much from the change in strategy as the increase in numbers, but also the fact that Al Qaeda has fucked up very badly as well in how they have conducted themselves.  Bin Laden even acknowledged the outrageous atrocities they have committed in his latest statement, though very little coverage has made into the press here.

I highly recommend Michael Yon's site as one good source of what is actually happening on the ground over there.  His series "Bless the Beasts and Children" details just one of the events that have turned the people against Al Qaeda.

I don't think any of this means our guys will be home for Christmas.

Doesn't matter at this point, Real.  We seem to be the choice for lesser of evils.  Now what is going to happen with the Kurdish rebels, and how Iran is played....

But I've made my choice on this topic, and I'm just gonna snicker.  I doubt Fox could top this one for spin.

     Res ipsa loquitor.

I also read a report in todays paper detailing the lower number of Iraqi civilian deaths and the large number of both Sunni and Shia showing up to help Americans secure their nation.  This shows that they are a part of this.  We are not occupiers so much as people trying to help them recover after an awful dictator and the resulting tumult to get him and all the Islamofacists OUT.  Go Iraqis!!

For many of these stories, the spin is more enlightening than the actual news article.

Glad you got a laugh.

But seriously, that's what I would call those that use the Islamic religion as a reason to institute a repressive regime.
