Some of my friends and I ( historians the whole lot of us..) are in a debate as to if the word Gwynvyd is Gaelic or Welsh. There seems to be some discussion online about it too. *shrugs* I always found the V suspect.. but stranger things have happened.

Maybe it extends back to Celtic, in which case you are all partly right. [;)]

.....there are a number of celtic languages, including Scots Gaelic, Irish Gaelic, Cymraeg (welsh), Kernow (cornish) and Breton.

So I am being pedantic, but Kernow is cornish for cornwall - Kernewek/Kernowak(and variations thereof) and is a Brythonic(sp?) celtic language as is welsh, which is different from scottish, Irish and Manx - but still an insular language.

That was my whole point. They are all Celtic in origin. Welsh stemming from the branch dark mentioned. I think Cornish, Welsh and Breton are much the same. There is also a place in South America where its spoken but i forget where.

Patagonia Welsh, maybe? Settled in the 1800's. So random it stuck in my mind...!

Reality....... Thank you for that.

"It is one of the old languages from across the pond, your Mum gave it to you for your SCA name.. you like the meaning of it.. who cares?"  as my friend put it. I would love to get to the bottom of it.. but I'll be darned if I can find more on it.. I might have to rope one of my herald friends into working on it for me.
I recently changed my SCA name to fit my garb and persona I am using now better.. but I still love that name. ( the new name is one from 1580's Venice... they had nicer clothes then early Celts. Hard to wear High Elizabethan and Venitian with a Early Celt persona. *smiles* )

I love pronouncing Welsh names... once you get the hang of it it isnt so bad... They swear I chose my old name just to trip up the heralds in Court. *grins*

Gwynvyd also has a spiritual meaning... Ring of light or something like that.

yeppers.. it is the concept of "Heaven" Where enlightened beings go to become one again with the creator.

After turns of the wheel, and learning all you need to learn you get to basicaly go home. Earth or where we dwell is Abred, and the underworld is Annwn.

My personal hearldy is a silver willow with the caldron of Dagda at it's base. It is how folks find me on the battle field, or in camp is my banner.

thanks for the email BTW. Very nice.

Gwyn
