I loved him as the original Captain Kirk, over the top acting or not. And he was very attractive. People do get older and he could be cast in a cameo at least.

And if you watch Boston Legal, he is a hoot as Denny Crane.

Perhaps they could not go to that alternate Universe where Kirk is....

I like the fact that Shatner seems able to laugh at himself.

Shatner has made many enemies in the entertainment world. That is probably the biggest reason.

Yes, that is true, he knows he is a bit of a caricature of himself and he does join in when being made fun of. But at 76, he is still working, so I say, you go boy!

Wasn't he killed in one of the ST movies?  The one with Picard?

Not sure which movie but yes his character was killed. However in the land of movies no one realllllly ever dies,

I think Kirk died in Generations, the movie that blended the original storyline with the next generation.

Spock died too.. didn't he?

He died in movie two, but gave his spirit to Dr. McCoy. He returned to life (I forget exactly how) in movie three.

All I know is that I've always wanted a tribble. [:D]

So did Uhura, and it turned out not to be one of her better ideas. [:)]

Man, I'm really outing myself as a Trek fan, aren't I?

Leonard Nimoy is in the next movie. The answer is obvious, Spock is a Vulcan and would outlive Kirk..

Thought it was because he really isn't interested in being the ST movies anymore. Futurama really had to work to get him for their ST show.

I don't think she died in any of the movies. I was referring to the episode "The trouble With Tribbles" (one of the few I know by name, btw) in which she and other Enterprise crew members but tribbles, which then mulitply like mad and wreak havoc on the ship.

She was eaten by a tribble.........

Just kidding. I think dc was talking about her wanting a tribble "too", not dying "too".

Come on, dc, you can name all the episodes, I bet...... [:D]

Directors FINALLY woke up and realized that Shatner CANNOT act and doesn't bring in audiances any more, his 'way - of- talking' is more annoying than the energizer bunny; yes, they killed Shatner off in "ST:Gernerations."  If Shatner was int he new movie, I wouldn't see it, the man makes my skin crawl, I think I need to add him as a 'hard limit; ' lol.  No original ST or Priceline commercials or that tv show he is/was in.  {shakes head}

HaveRopeWillBind -> RE: William Shatner can't figure out why he isn't in the next ST movie (10/28/2007 12:11:25 PM)

Stephen,

Uhura never was killed off in any of the movies. I suppose she just retired from Star Fleet at some point.

As for Shatner not being hired when Nimoy was, it's really simple. Nimoy is essentially doing a cameo of himself as an older Spock. The main character of Spock at Star Fleet Academy will be played by a younger actor to be determined last I heard. Shatner's Kirk was killed off (lamely) in "Generations" so it would be impractical to have a Kirk who cameos as an older version of himself than when he died. The older Spock will appear briefly at a time well after Kirk's death so it would be inconsistent for Kirk to also appear. In order to wedge Shatner into the film would require a major re-write of the script.

Slaverose,  Shatner was never an "A" list actor.
And like I said before he was totally "type-casted" as Capt. Kirk.
He did fine as long as he stayed within his narrow "range."
It's like that guy who played "Superman" George Reeves in the 1950's, he just (couldn't) play anything else!
There are some actors and actresses who can play any part, Shatner just isn't one of them as are a lot of other actors.
Now should they have him in the ST movie? Sure, why not!
That's what he does best.
I just can't see him as a "Leading Man" in anything else.
Or in a supporting role either as I'd be thinking, "There's Capt Kirk!"

Good point HaveRope.  Spock died in two during the battle with Kahn and gave his spirit to McCoy.  In three he came back...his body was ejected out of the chute into space and landed on the planet Genesis.  There he began the life process all over again.  Something bout the planet brought him back.  I think.  I believe three is also when the Klingons killed off David, Kirk's son.  We are such nerds.  Live long and prosper.  hehehehehe.

Let's also remember that with Kirk, having entered that "nexus" in "Generations", he could "pop out" anywhere ...

(Yes, I'm a "Trekkie". So what?)

Level -> RE: William Shatner can't figure out why he isn't in the next ST movie (10/28/2007 12:25:08 PM)

Chris Pines will play Kirk and Zachary (Sylar from Heroes) Quinto as the young Spock.

The cast includes Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, Simon Pegg as engineer Scott, John Cho as helmsman Sulu, Zoe Saldana as communications officer Uhura and Anton Yelchin as navigator Chekov.

lazarus1983 -> RE: William Shatner can't figure out why he isn't in the next ST movie (10/28/2007 2:24:26 PM)

Hey, don't forget this out and proud Trekkie. All ten movies on special edition DVD, and all seven seasons of DS9 on DVD.

But yeah, I think the whole re-casting and re-starting the franchise is a terrible idea. I don't want to see anyone else play Kirk than Shatner. I don't want to see anyone else play Spock than Leonard Nimoy. McCoy IS Deforest Kelley.

Many Trek fans grew up on these shows, they grew up with those specific actors playing those characters. Watching this movie would be almost like going home, and finding all new people trying to act like your family.
