The only thing I know of is Jay Wiseman's various semi-rantings about it.  His bondage book is about 1/3 about safety so take what he says with a grain of salt.  That said, it is an easy way to kill someone so do be careful.

Bruising of the windpipe is a common cause of death from hands across the front of the neck.  Death comes later when the windpipe swells from the bruising and cuts off the air supply slowly and they die in their sleep.

As I know all too well, using your fingers on the side of the neck cuts off flow of blood to the brain and can quickly cause someone to pass out which will freak you the fuck out if you care for the person and don't expect and don't know what the hell is happening.

A favorite trick of mine and FAR safer is to simply put your hand over someone's mouth and use  your other hand to pinch their nose shut.  Allowing them to breath once in a while through their nose all while looking deeply into their eyes tends to make most women's cunts wet.

Go to your police station and ask them for reports on people who hane done breath play. Mabey they will even let you talk to some of the people who are in jail for haning done breath play. I do have friends who are into this but I choose to leave it alone.

Yes, but it was so fucking cool wasn't it?

There's plenty of information here, though I suspect that you may not like reading it.  Still, if you are to make informed choices in life you can't just read those things that agree with a preconceived conclusion.

I have tried various levels of breath play but its something I am super careful about. A little strangulation, covering her mouth and nose with my hands, or wrapping a belt around her throat are about as far as I will go. The risks are too high for my tastes, I like BDSM as much as the next guy but I have no desire at all to kill someone or take the slightest risk of that happening.

The hand over her mouth, pinching her nose shut is a favorite of mine, I like to watch the look in her eyes as she realizes that I control this most elemental of all functions, breathing. I prefer to do it while fucking, but the effect it can have when she is bound and experiencing sensory deprivation is amazing.

I had forgotten I had this list, but here are some resources from a small presentation my owner and I did a while back on breath play:

Breath Control Play - http://www.mybdsm.com/pages/breathplay/enter.html - A series of essays on breath control, the risks of it, and resources.

Asphyxiation Newsgroup  - alt.sex.asphyx (can also be accessed on http://groups.google.com)

The Judo Choke - http://www.fightingarts.com/content01/judo_choke.shtml - A series of articles on how to do choking holds (including with the carteroid artery) safely complete with drawings.

Information on the dangers of breath play
Jay Wiseman’s Essays on the Medical Dangers of Breath Play - http://members.aol.com/OldRope/breamain.htm - Includes essays on: The Medical Realities of Breath Play, Breath Control: Is Epinephrine The "Smoking Gun"?,etc.  The one thing to keep in mind in reading his essays is that he relies entirely on cases of auto erotic asphyxiation (breath play alone and generally done via hanging) as opposed to consensual breath play between two people.

http://www.datenschlag.org/howto/atem/english/risiken.html - Largely German website (but there’s lots of information that’s been translated into English) that has information on various medical issues to watch out for.  Very detailed, dry, but good information.  And as opposed to Wiseman who gets his information largely from autoerotic asphyxiation, they pull from sports medicine and other more relevant areas.

Danger in the Judo Choke? - http://www.blackbeltmag.com/archives/blackbelt/1970/apr70/dan.html - An article on a study of people’s medical reactions to being put in various judo holds.  They conclude that while the people became unconscious after the holds, because the holds were not continued while they were unconscious there was no permanent damage but the holds should not be performed on people suffering cardiac problems of hypertension since there is an increase in blood pressure and load to the heart during the holds.

C~

P.S. - Don't forget you're gonna die from doing breath play.  In fact I'm already dead and this is my ghost haunting the halls of CM!

I tend to go with the hands over mouth and pinching the nose method.

Choking is fun when carefully done because you can give that *feel* of not being able to breath without actually causing constriction or even with much pressure on most people... You know, just giving that feeling from the touchiness of the neck and the power-position of someone grasping it (I love that as a bottom, mmmmm).

But yeah, for actual control of air I like to use the hands-mouth-nose method.  Keeps them from breathing without risking damage to the windpipe and I hate messing with bloodflow.  Kids I grew up with used to do the bloodflow method for kicks and show-offs and since it's always squicked me out.

Not informational, this post, but conversational haha.

I enjoy breath play in many forms, however I never restict breathing by putting any preasure over the wind pipe or nick area,I prefer to use nose mouth restriction, either using my hands and or mouth,I enjoy breathing for my partner, its pretty exciting I also have a latex hood that has two long tubes that are placed in the nose area, also very sexy, and lastly I use my big ol ass, which is very erotic for me...

thanks for the info. pretty much what I expected..and I expected some remarks like "dnonymars" you know I did not say "hey I am going out to choke someone with no experience because its cool" I asked for links on information because I want to expand my knowledge of the subject. Even if I do not perform a certain kink or procedure on someone, I still like to be somewhat versed in the area of topic and know a bit.

I guess some did not understand, "I realize many of you are going to say omg that is not safe...save it, thats not My question. " meant SAVE IT THAT IS NOT MY QUESTION. if I sound like a bitch...well I guess I am. I know very well the risks..many things in bdsm are risky..many things in life are risky..I am well aware, but wanting to know more..I dont see the problem in that. so once again I will state again, "I realize many of you are going to say omg that is not safe...save it, thats not My question.
"
now that I have said My peace about that..Thanks for the input otherwise

Did you actually expect that to stop people from telling you it's dangerous? You've posted over two hundred times... haven't you noticed trends yet?

You're going to see both sides of any issue in any thread here. Sometimes more than two sides, depending on the issue... and this is a hot button for a lot of people.

The hand over mouth and nose method works really well. I count in my head. Generally not much over thirty seconds-anyone can hold thier breath for longer than that. That's if you do it yourself. Bound, helpless to pull those hands off-unable to do more than wiggle and whine, eyes bugging out, turning red to her tits-it seems like an eternity.

I especially like it during anal, with her on her back-while I am inside.....the contractions caused by the struggling are truly wonderful to feel........Makes me REALLY have to work on keeping track of the count.

And I just adore the trust factor it takes for a girl to go there, and how hard it makes a lot of them come.

Thank you

I don't have a URL for you but here's a repost of something I said on another forum (regarding safewords - hence the first line) that falls into the category:
quote:

In ANY scene I've EVER done with speech restrictions, I ALWAYS remind My sub that safe words are ALWAYS available.

The only exception is breath play / drowning where safe "words" are not easily available. Here I instruct the sub with a very simple physical safe "word" which is really a "safe action" . For instance I'll have her hold onto My arm (I need both of my hands after all) and at the SLIGHTEST squeeze all play stops immediately, there is no room for a distinction between yellow and red here. This is of course on top of VERY careful monitoring. Usually I'm holding My breath with her (though I'm pretty good at it so I NEVER rely on that.

I've heard of some people doing breath play and including a "struggle" as part of it. I'm either not that daring or not that careless...

DON'T try this at home kids...

Safety for someone you love and care about should never be taken with a grain of salt.  As a Master it is Your responsiblity to make sure You know all You can about the situations You put Your sub or slave it.

The few times I have done breath play, it has always been with saran wrap over my hand, to create a seal. I keep it to VERY short intervals, where I know they can hold their breath that long. The idea, with us, is the surrender to allow me to stop their breathing, not a test to see how long it'll last. I allow a struggle, but we also have a safe action. Something that cant be confused with a struggle, its a hand signal that has to be done away from my body (hence it not be confused with a struggle motion).

We do a little breath play in almost every session.  Usually we use an inflatable gag which when inflated in the mouth closes also  the nasal airway.

Safety will always be an issue with breathplay, but that just makes it more fun. just because i like someone sontrolling my breathing does not mean i would consider it with anyone who didn't know CPR, just in case something goes wrong. Follow th Boy Scout motto "be prepared" and You keep things safer for everyone. Enjoy it while You can, i am sure the government will "save" us from it soon enough.
