I have about 50 favorite bands. My top big 3 are Sabbath, Priest and Maiden.

Excellent choices!

Styx...really? Wow, I have been transported back to the late 70s, and memories of their concerts, along with Kansas, Jethro Tull, Heart, Queen, and many others.

In the here and now, I've been listening to a lot of Panic at the Disco, Muse, Death Cab for Cutie, London After Midnight, Jane's Addiction, and Arctic Monkeys.

I love music and collect so many different genres of CDs. Here's something mellow and fun:

Remember, I was born a few decades too late :)  Still catching up here.

That line made me giggle, "born a few decades too late." Wait, let me pull out my cane.

I once read that bands such as Styx and Kansas were "corporate bands" as if they had less significance or influence.

One of my fav Styx albums is Styx II, with songs such as Lady, Fugue in G Minor (pipe organs rock!), Father OSA, A Day...it's a good album. One of their albums included a version of Claire de Lune. I really appreciated that they incorporated classical works in their music.

God, I could go on and on about music. Blues, jazz, rock, swing, ragtime, classical, it's all good.

TV on the Radio and the Australian garage-rock band the Drones, although I've been playing the Stones' Exile on Main St. back to back for the last few days.

I'm not saying these are favorites, just good and worth a listen. They are also free and represent a shift in music distribution. Radiohead's move has been discussed here before. Of the Saul Williams release I would point out that this is basically the new Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails release with poducer Alan Moulder in tow. It also contains a digital booklet 33 pages long in PDF format. Pretty cool.

InRainbows - Radiohead

(yes, they force you to pay(?) 0.00 and then put you in the queue for download and then force you through a really long and tedious payment interface with multiple pages clicks. WTF?)

The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust - Saul Williams
http://niggytardust.com/
(self-explanatory and cooler interface for those just wanting to try the music out first)

Fuck the RIAA - Don't buy from RIAA labels!

"TV on the Radio"!  I've been meaning to listen to some more of them, after loving their song, "Wolf Like Me."  The video was tres fun, too!

A couple of lesser known Japanese bands who *rule*:

Calmando Qual - deep, moody, original - what genre?  Maybe experimental industrial, but with a melody.  Beautiful vocals.

Recommended, to get to know them: Calmando Qual's EP's, "Silent," and "Twisted Clock."

(Just a few of their songs sound more heavy metal than the rest, and there's just one album of theirs that's techno remixes of some of their songs - so, if you just say "no" to techno, as I do, their "Mechanical Mix with Unjust Blood" won't be your first choice.)

exist+trace - After hearing their resonant voices, I was shocked to learn that they are all female.  Genre?  Goth, I would say.

"Good morning, Apes!  hahahaha  Wake up!  WAKE UUUP!"

- from March of the Apes, by Calmando Qual
