When Jurassic Park came out, my 5 year old niece cheered on the dinosaurs to eat every body. When Ghost in The Darkness hit the big screen, my brother wanted to see the lions win. In the Skeleton Key, we realize how the Vodoo couple cheats death. Some where happy about the ending becuase they felt the couple deserved to live the good life after having such a harsh one. Rather you call the character the villian or merely the antagonist, how often do you root for him/her when watching a movie? How many of us have tried to agree or understand the reasons why Jason, Freddy, and Michael do what they do? Who would rather see the Dark Side win in the Star Wars epic series? When you have a favoriate villian, are you sadden when they are defeated at the end and happy when they win? Which Villian do you root for and why? After all, some of us see this villian/antagonist as the good guy.

Hate to bust your bubble, but there are villains in real life. Now what do you say ? AND, define villain !. Islamic terrorists, McVeigh, religious fanatics, the GOVERNMENT. T

I like to see the insurgents win even though the government declares them terrorists and criminals. Their ideas are so enlightened and they are so brave fighting against the greatest army the world has ever seen using every means at their disposal.

Wow... everything IS political. shakes head To the OP's actual TOPIC... I find when I watch crime shows, wanting the criminal to better hide himself or tell the detectives to go fly a kite, and lawyer up. But then I'm a little two headed about the police. [&:] As for the "bad" guys, no.. normally not.

It all depends on the hero. It was always the hero when I used to watched films The heroine was mostly eye candy. If I thought the hero was a bit of a pillock always flashing his teeth ,showing his best profile to the camera and the eye candy then having a fight and ending up with not a hair out of place ...... I wanted the baddie to smash 'im one lol. If the hero was a bit like me then the baddie had better be careful. I like the old 30/40s film scenes where the heroine gets a kick up the arse or a grapefruit in the face.That makes me larf like hell that does.

The number one example for me is Blade Runner. Rutger Hauer's android is the boo hiss villain until we see that he's just like us: all he wants is to cling to life. Awesome moment when he dies in the rain. Oh yeah and in Blade 3, I wanted Parker Posey to drink everybody and have spin off movie on her own as a bad-ass vampire bitch!

The only time I "root for the villian" is when Im so emotionally attached to the hero that I need to change my perspective in order to be able to enjoy the story. If I get too keyed up internally, I cant enjoy the show. My UM's father used to consistently identify with the bad guys, not as a tool to detach from the story, but just because he sympathized with those characters. Once I realized he met almost every criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder, it kinda made sense.

If she wore a tight business suit and heels while giving the hero the business that would make my day especially if she did it to Clint Eastwood. Serve the silly sod right lol

But he fucked up and made people pay for mistakes they didn't make either, else I would agree. I kind of root for the Reeker. Or Dracula - Vlad or Stokers versions only. the.dark.

Even assuming we held back on NBC weapons, we could still conventional-bomb them into a new parking lot! Or put another way, I could beat up Mike Tyson if his arms and legs were tied behind him and his jaw wired shut...Or if I was allowed to bring a weapon, and he just had to use his body...But then, I'd be accused of cheating, not "using every means at my disposal"! [;)] That said, have you ever noticed that the cops on TV make deals with scum more than they're allowed to...Or sometimes, they "accidentally" unplug interrogation-cameras and extract confessions "By Any Means Necessary"(TM) I find that especially satisfying when they do that to the more smug criminals! Speaking of criminals, here in Missouri, we had a serial killer who targeted ONLY drug-dealers. The Pope at that time came over and specifically asked for him to be spared the death-sentence. In an amazing display of cowardice, the Governor agreed--then executed him once the Pope left! I believe Britain had a serial-killer who killed prostitutes? Jack the Ripper or something like that? Please notice that vigilantes are prosecuted/persecuted like no other type of criminals...Perhaps due to a fear of law-enforcers, or a fear that "conventional" law-enforcement will be replaced by private citizens doing the job more efficiently?

I don't know a single person who didn't want to see DeNiro get away in Heat and his Neal was certainly a bad guy. The consensus seems to be universal, great movie, hated the ending.

I mean, really, who -didn't- root for Hannibal Lecter when he made his escape in Silence of the Lambs? I was always rooting for Dr. Doom in the Fantastic Four comic books and various others...I still do, especially after they ruined him in the movies. :-( I think people like to root for villians because it's a nice form of entertainment...a kind of escapism to root for somebody so (usually) different from yourself. Of course, sometimes the heroes are just so hateable that you can't help but root for the villians...after all, coolness always overules goodness. :-p
