And here I thought Joanus couldn't get any more ignorant. Starting at the beginning, the Mk12 is derived from the AR-15/M-16 line of weapons. Although why anyone would actually want to use the M-16's 5.56mm round in a sniper rifle is beyond me. XM is a standard designator for any rifle in development by the US military. The 'X' stand for experimental. For instance the XM-109 is a 25mm sniper rifle currently in evaluation. The weapon the OP isapparently trying to talk about is the XM-8 which if accepted wouldn't be in the field in quantity for several years. Although since it fires the same caliber round as the M-16, 5.56x45mm NATO, it will continue to not pack enough punch. It will however be more reliable with less maintenance required which should reduce situations such as what happened to the 507th Maintenance Co. As others have pointed out virtually all of Joanus's other assertions in this thread have been wrong.
