Oh... i get the feeling that the small group of 'regulars' who are still here drove everyone else out.
Nah, there's been a lot of turn over, even since then. Very few of the current regular posters were regulars back then, barring those who post mainly on P&R.
The bad moderating was inconsistent upholding of rules, with clear favoritism shown to some users, while others gotten banned for things that weren't even infractions according to the forum rules.
There was also loads of thread/post pulling going on, and a general atmosphere of censorship against unpopular (to the mod(s)) opinions. It wasn't uncommon for people to put time and effort into decent reply to threads, only to find a few hours later that the entire thread got pulled because a single person whom the mods didn't like posted on it.
On top of that there were various episodes with users creating multiple sock puppets who were allowed to get a way with stuff like deliberately targeting specific users, as well as sowing general discontent by gossiping in private mail, and playing people out against each other. All of which was permitted by various mods for way too long, and even resulted in some long time regulars being perma banned, because they complained about the socks.
By the time the moderation got back -somewhat- under control, and later stopped completely, the exodus was already in full swing, with over half of the regulars no longer posting here.
Since then it's only been gaining momentum, because the less decent threads there are, the less people check/read/post to the forums.
