Status: offline 		As times change so does the terminology.  One can distinguish an era of time by certain terminilogy, words or phrases.  Do you have any such words, terms, phrases you use consistently, that you are aware of, that are "out of date"?  i have one my un's find quite amusing, they had no idea what i was referring to when i asked them where my dungarees were.  i had to explain that's what we used to call jeans in the 60's and 70's.

Status: offline 		Just off the top of my head I still call a refrigerator and icebox... I am old enough that my grandmother had a real icebox and had ice delivered and have called them iceboxes all my life.

I also remember when gay had a different meaning.

Lots of 50 and 60's slang that is not used.

Status: offline 		I still use supper vs dinner. Davenport pops up every so often  (old term for couch or sofa) :)
 
And once in a while I say "ooooooohhh mmmmmAAAAAN?! in protest on something.
 
(I'm hold up in the 60's and I refuse to come out  :)

Status: offline 		I'm not very social, but here are a few terms I know go out of date and/or have new meanings.
Note:  These are from the point of view of a 21-year old college student.  These are the meanings as the rising adults use them; I'm sure individuals with a bit more experience will be more inclined towards an older set of vocabulary which would likely strike me as dated.

Sociopolitical:
  • atheist  (Belief there's no God to belief that religions are probably made up)

  • organized religion  (Catholism/Jewidism used to be  "organized religion"- now just about anywhere with a designated church is one, and non-organized religion has gone from being not-major religions to "personal beliefs")

  • feminism  (former feminists would be called "humanitarians" now, or "civil rights activists".)

  • racism  (smaller things can be racist now.  100 years ago, maybe lynching was racist, depending on who you asked.  Today, that's extreme racism; saying "I believe [members of a race] to be less able to perform as a medical professional" is racist.)

  • associate  (involved in partnership to the guy who takes out the store's garbage- the "waste management associate")

  • engineer  (or he could be the "waste management technician")  (Engineers used to be those guys who worked on, you know, engines.  Now it's like.. they're the guys who do technical work.  It doesn't even have to be mechanical.  Hell, it can be with computers or chemicals.)

  • education (in the sense, "I have an education")

  • long distance relationship (raise your hand if you've had a relationship with someone over a thousand miles away!  Weren't relationships from the other ends of the same state LDR's before phones and such bloomed everywhere?)


Engineering:
  • English units (getting very close to extinction)
  • Equations with variables depending on certain variables.  (Damn old chemists; what if I don't want a density in g/cm^3?  What if I happen to be partial to kg/L?  What then?  Your little generic /1000 conversion isn't going to help me much now is it?!  *Grumbles*)
  • microscope  (Ah, the good ol' days, when these meant optical lenses in tubes..)
  • computer  (Hah.)
  • calculator  (I wonder how many people a math nerd would've killed for a TI-92 back fifty years ago..)

Okay, this list building is no longer amusing.  Off to other things!  (Yes, I've gotten over my OCD enough that I no longer need to be a perfectionist on every little thing.)

SSC not RACK
BDSM, not WIITWD
and I still use safewords, although I understand that most people think they are nothing more than a "false sense of security"

And when I see a nice "chick" walking in the mall, "Hubba, Hubba!"
And some nautical slang that most people wouldn't understand.

I am soooooooooo "old school" and I love it.
I prefer to use the term "old school" than "old terms" or outdated, played out, time warp, etc.
 
I have so many terms I am not sure where to start, here are a few of my current favorites:
 
dude, freak, twisted, freak of the week, talk to the hand, I keep it real, make my day.......the list is endless.
Lotus I am lost in the 80's and early 90's myself.

Status: offline 		When I started working at my organization 20 years ago, I was puzzled by why all the old-timers called department by the wrong names. Now that every department has renamed itself at least twice during that time, I've become one of those old-timers calling everything by the old name!

Status: offline 		Thought of another one - wedge. i still ask for a wedge and i get this look like i am some form of alien by the kids behind the counter of subway.  i just can't think of them as subs lol... or hogies - south jersey i think calls them that. Is calling a sub a wedge regional (east coast) or a term of the past (70's i believe)?

Status: offline 		I get odd looks when I tell someone to grab me a single jack (hand sledge) at work- that was a term that I got out of a novel that I liked.
I used that term a bunch while working with my dad, which is the only reason he knew what the term double jack (big two handed sledgehammer) refered to when he was working with a real old timer.

no, but a friend of mine got real confused by the term white lightning, so is that a term that is dying out as well?

True, some of these are still used, but there have been a few changes:
 
Bummer is still used, but is now Bumma'
Bad Ass is still used, but is now one word
Hot is still used, but is now Hawt
Gay is still used, but now has an "h", and may replace the "a", with an "e"
