general post

Just a quick google brings up a army report saying 1 in 8 troops returning from Iraq suffer from post traumatic stress disorder. Basically, the chances are, that war will fuck with your head.

No doubt there are only veterans with chests full of medals that post on the threads, who have been in the middle of the fiercest action and think troops that suffer PTSD are wimps.

Not a general post.

Spoken like a true arm-chair warrior.

I've probably done more fighting than many vets who boast about their chest full of medals. If you read the posts by so called vets the US must give medals away like wedding confetti.

Cleaver,

Isn't it amazing how the right wing chest thumpers who love to whine about how "being a peace activist" , or criticising stupid decisions on the part of the president undermines the moral of our "brave troops" and yet, upon hearing of evidence, however patchy and imprecise, of large numbers of homeless being veterans, instead of being outraged and demanding actions and solutions, instead quibble about whether it is 10% or 25%?

They should have bumper stickers that read "Support Our Brave Troops but Fuck Them When They Retire"

Michael, I seriously doubt that the Bush Administration (most of whom are non veterans) took into consideration what would happen to our Troops when they got home.
And they certainly didn't consider funding veterans programs and the V.A. adequately.
And yes, they should be outraged!
I'm in the middle of composing a hand-written letter to my congressman now and I'll make copies for my two senators as well.
There are many good paying govt jobs that these veterans should be steered into.
If they're making a good salary then they won't be homeless.

P.S. I think we should all be "outraged" over this!
Contact your congressmen and senators.

Yep, its amazing how they're willing to piss on their former comrades (that's if they really are former comrades). I'm totally against the war but outraged as to how the politicians that sent the troops to war and the supporters of the war, see troops that have come home wounded or mentally incapacitated, as an inconvenience.

....are there any figures on the homeless in the USA that stand the FHKY test?

Very few, actually.

The issue of "homelessness" in America is one of those issues that has almost a perfect inverse relationship to which administration is in office, versus the amount of coverage it gets.

In other words, regardless of the "actual" number and composition of the homeless, the amount of press given to the "homeless issue" is about 5x (swag) higher during any Republican Administrations than it is during any Democratic Administration.

Firm

That is complete and utter bullshit.

what seperatists crap is this?

In the 90's and early 2000 all I saw was article after article on the homeless, and the epidemic. Hell thats why I got involved. Since this administration I have heard zip. Hell we had a mortgage bust, where more foreclosures happened then ever before in such a short period of time. http://www.nedap.org/pressroom/documents/04-12-07CanarsieDigest.pdf
http://www.larouchepac.com/pages/breaking_news/2007/06/30/mortgage_bust_ground_zero.asp
http://media.progressnowaction.org/clips/national-news/housing-and-homeless-1/

Do you hear about the homeless every week on the news? No. But you bet your ass they are there. My church clothes, feeds, and supports many orgs in the area that cares for them.

The dropping number of homeless in 2006 is great, I had not read that when I posted this.. It was prob due to the subprime loan market, and moving in with those realitives. I dread seeing what the numbers are going to be when the reports for 2008 and 2009 come out. after all of those foreclosures hit. http://www.realtytrac.com/news/press/pressRelease.asp?PressReleaseID=112

what you all are missing is the point.. not how many.. not let me read the print out and I'll determine if it's worthy of my attention..

The fact that we have *ANY* service men and women who are not being taken care of and provided for irks me. And it should you too.

I think latching onto the whole " well this group or that wants you to think this or that.. or I want the charted numbers" is just a way of disconnecting yourself from the issue as most everyone does when it comes to the homeless of any type.

What does it matter if it is 250,000 or 450,000 or even 680,000 homeless vets? It is simply not acceptable at any level.

Gwyn

Good post.  Most Americans are 2 checks away from financial ruin.   A grandpa picked up the wrong kid at the school the other day. Neither he or the kid knew it!  How is that for family?  we are disconnected.

things were tough in the 80s - you never heard of a baby thrown in the garbage can until reagan was in.

i liked reagan. but frankly i am sick of bush and would like my country back.  I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK!

Yeah .... damn Bush!

Chronic Homelessness Takes Dip in 2005
Nov 7 03:27 PM US/Eastern
By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - The number of people who are chronically homeless dropped by nearly 12 percent from 2005 to 2006, according to government estimates being released Wednesday.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development credited government programs designed to move homeless people into permanent housing.

"HUD and local communities are increasingly providing permanent housing solutions and breaking a vicious cycle of homelessness for those who have lived on the streets as a way of life," HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson said in a statement.

HUD says people are chronically homeless if they have been continuously living on the streets for a year or more, or if they have been homeless at least four times in the past three years. They also have to have a disability, often mental illness or substance abuse.

The number of chronically homeless people dropped from 175,900 in 2005 to 155,600 in 2006, according to data collected by HUD from about 3,900 cities and counties.

Errrmm... you do know that the DoD only deals with active duty personnel, not vets, don't you?  Try the VA website.
