Strike it as anything you want. That I want to know who I am dealing with before putting all of my trust in them.

How much trust is required for generic online discussions between people you're not ever likely to meet? It's not as though you were planning on handing over your ATM card and PIN to the man.

No I do not but I also want to know who is real vs who is not real. Apparently you do though.
Spotting fakes yet you bash me because I actually take it a step further and actually check out those fakes.

Like I said, I'm perfectly happy to be called psycho by you because that only means I am playing safe. While others are not. Anyone who bashes someone for being safe really has issues.

Is that any worse than trusting someone who signs up on a site like "verified bdsm"?

Can you trust ANYONE on the net? "verified" or not?

Of course not...cn you trust ANYONE you meet at the grocery store?

Life is all about calculated risks. The more interaction you plan on having with someone, the more it makes sense to look into their background.

A site like verifiedBDSM was never about verifying people were safe or sane or even real. It was about having a neutral third party verify that they had done what they had said they had done. Perhaps this wouldn't be that useful, but it might be a damn site better then what is out there now.

I just find it pretty hypocritical that you made fun of that person, yet put trust in a site like verifiedbdsm. Seriously, how hard would it be for someone to FAKE it and still get verified? "Verified" just sets up a false sense of security. Who is this "neutral" third party anyway, and what does their opinion count? How do you verify what someone has "done" through an online "test" or seeing them at a dungeon event?

Really, you're setting people up to be scammed if they take it seriously at all. So for you to make that earlier point is comical. Putting trust in someone you met on the internet for input/advice is one thing, putting your trust in a site like "verifiedbdsm" for someone you may let use your body -- well, *that's* psycho.

I'll have to agree with you on this one Taggard. . . even though I feel like you *may* be a Randanista.

Where do I ever say anyone should put their trust in anything???

People are adults and should make their choices based on all available information. The more information available, the better those choices tend to be.

VerifiedBDSM is a place where people can have some information about themselves verifed by a neutral third party. If anyone is dumb enough to think that means it is safe to let that person do whatever they want is prolly gonna get used even without such a site.

I seriously think you underestimate the intelligence of your fellow kinkster.

A smart person would understand that and only put as much faith into such a verification as made sense.

Great questions all...read the website, make up your own mind, use the information for what it is worth. Some information is better than no information...

A Randanista?!?! Oh noooo...I went through my Objectivsim phase many moons ago.

I am a Zen Anarchist now...Rand lost me as a believer with her failure on Lifeboat ethics...

What led you to believe my leanings were that way, though???

The "Taggard" part. I thought you named yourself after one of her characters in The Fountainhead

I was on the boards when you first came up with the concept of verified BDSM. I'm sure that if the anyone wanted to read, they can go back in the archives and read them. I never got the impression that you were trying to sell "safety." I got the impression that you were saying that:
1) you were an independent 3rd party
2) people using the service could give as much info as they wanted to to get "verified" as correct (I.D.s, addresses, phone numbers, etc)
3) once the info was verified, people could take that as how they wanted to (meaning, if it was meaningless to them. . .fine. . .if they felt more comfortable with someone that was willing to give a driver's licence number . . . .fine)

You are right, we *are* all adults here and if someone wants to use your site as the "end all" for their saftey concerns, that is their choice. I think MOST people would take what they need from it but still use common sense.

Oh...yeah...it is actually Atlas Shrugged and it is Dagny Taggart. And it has absolutely nothing to do with my name. My parents wouldn't know the difference between Objectivism and Object Oriented Programming.

Taggard is my actual name. On my birth certificate and everything. It was 1969...I suppose it's better then Starshine-rainbow.

Sorry your welcome thread turned into flames, JohnWarren. The boards are in that kind of a cycle right now. No doubt that since you survived ASB, you are used to it though :)

lol....nah that could have never been, you seem much more like a Forest Moonshadow to me.

As for all of the rest of this I have to agree....when John Warren asks me for my account numbers or if I would like to be the subject of his next flogging demo (shhhh! a girl can dream can't she?) I will certainly do alot more checking at that point. Til then, I have no reason not to take him at his word. I am very much looking forward to his input on the boards.

Or maybe I'm just not thinking straight because I'm chillin' in some rubber.

Ah well, this too shall pass and in a few weeks everyone will be playing nicely again :)

Gloria and imtempting, what I can't figure out (and perhaps I shouldn't have used the term bizarre in my earlier post), is why such vocal suspicion? Unless you are looking to play with him, or he has somehow indicated to you that he's looking to play with you - then what's the big deal that one can't take a "wait and see" attitude? I haven't noticed others receiving that kind of reception when they first start posting here.

Is it because he wrote a book? Big deal! (And yes, a very nice book it was...) Over the years there have been lots of people from way back in the beginning (bbs wise) who ended up writing some nice books and they have been on various email loops and bbs. Some of them I liked and agreed with to some degree, others I didn't like, but still agreed with to some degree, and others I didn't like and didn't agree with at all, but bottom line is, writing a book is what someone does...not who they are.

best regards,
fate

I wrote a book once, when I was fifteen. No one will ever read it because I can do so much more with that character these days.

I feel slighted, somehow; the last thread to devolve into flames involved cake. Where is the cake here? An expectation has been set...

John, did you have a problem finding an editor/proofreader who understood the subject material enough not to muck about with what you had to say? Or do publishers actually require a third party editor at all? I haven't done much research on that subject, and I'd be interested in hearing the process from WordPerfect to store shelves.

I have GOT to get better with the threading. I seem to have missed the flames.

For the record, I don't have a single problem with someone asking me if I'm really John Warren. After all if there are fake JWs going around, it only hurts my reputation.

The questions I've seen have been relatively polite. Guess I'll have to go looking for the flames

Hehe... you didn't miss much. Was fairly mild compared to some other recent threads. I think they're starting to run out of napalm.

Perhaps bickering would have been a better choice of words. For the record, I was more curious about the behaviour than I was defending you

Welcome.

I have to admit, I have heard of some of those titles, but havn't had the chance to get a hold of them to read. I am sure they are great books. It is nice to have reconginzed people around, even if it is someone i havn't heard of. You learn something new every day, and i enjoy the learning experience.

I also have to congrates anyone on the will power to bing such a topic into the publics eye. Being a member of many Gay/lezbian groups, i have found so little people who have the curage to try and inform the public about diffrent views, and lifestyles that are all around us. So congrates on being a leader, you help inspire alot of people, to do what they're heart desires.
