You pose a rather interesting question.  It has me thinking for sure.  But i'm kind of drawing a blank.  But i do agree on the ability to cook and clean... Those are essential.  Well, in my opinion anyways.

Really? that's funny...I don't cook at all and I can clean, but choose not to. So I hire a cleaning woman. I seem to have been a successful submissive for all my life...I guess I made up for it by being a rock star in the sack.

This question came to me while reading a thread on the general board but i didn't want to hijack it so i thought i'd come here and ask.

I can think of any number of skills that a Dominant might find useful or even necessary to learn. The use of any toys he plans to use on his submissive, management methods etc. I was trying to think of skills a submissive might find usefull and am drawing a blank. Besides things her specific Dom or Master require her to learn does anyone feel that there are any universal skills a submissive might find useful? I am not refering to personality traits or training someone to be a slave before she even has a Master. But things like cooking or dancing (though i don't consider these to be specifically submissive skills, just things that might be useful when trying to serve another.)

I'm not taking myself too seriously here. I don't think one can be trained to be "a submissive or slave" rather one is trained to serve one's specific Top. However i do believe there are things a Dom can learn before in a D/s relationship that could enhance it so i was simply curious if people could think of "submissive skills."

Just a silly post for a Wednesday morning.

charlotte

Off the top of my head...

Basic cooking (including the timing of meals or dishes)
Cleaning (vacuming, moping, sweeping, different sorts of cleaners to use for different sorts of problems)
Laundry
General history and current events
A basic knowledge of the different genres of music
Basic car repair
Basic house repairs
How to make and stick to a budget (including balancing a checkbook)
Basic computer programs (office suite, email, etc)
Basic clothing and shoe mending/polish/upkeep
Generalized research including how to use a city library's resources
How to communicate clearly and succinctly both verbally and in written form
Clear understanding of who they are and how they became who they are
Flexibility (physically, emotionally, and mentally)
Ability to shut up and listen, how to entertain (definitely not an intuitive skill, but a learned one)
How to read other peoples body and facial language
Gratitude & humility
Poise
Making a good cup of coffee or tea

One of the skills he values most in me (this is what he has told me repeatedly) is my ability to keep him entertained in a conversation. He thinks I have extraordinary conversing skills.

Another skill he values is my ability to keep up with him in regard to my physical fitness level. I am somewhat skilled in this regard and he is training me further.

He values my organizational skills.

He has some passing interest in my ability to repair antiques and refinish old furniture.

My ability to give great blow jobs is also pretty high on the skills that I have which he employs often.

I went through you're list of submissive skills, and just let me say, I suck! (however I do suck a mean cock )  I'm not worthy to be a submissive let alone one you would even look at.  hee hee not that I'm looking to serve another, nor are you looking at me... but I had to tell you I got a real kick out of your post.  Me thinks the Stepford wives had a big impression on you.

Universal?

Hmm...general 'old fashioned' female role skills like cooking, cleaning, sewing, etc, etc

I agree, but for some reason, I just do not see Nicole Kidman (from the re-make) rimming, do you? Definitely cock sucking though.

This is where that terrible "Every Dominant will train you to their likeings so why bother" ends up chapping my backside.
When you learn a skillset the mind gets sharper and into better shape, thus it becomes more pliable not less pliable.
More able to adapt and learn because the mind has continued to learn instead of becomming set in a single mode.
The I'll just have to untrain you anyways mindset is a crock of SH^) in my mind. If the mind is pliable and in good shape it will take shorter to learn a new standard or method than it will to train someone from the basics all the way up to whatever standard you may have.

Besides which I have seen far more instances where the slave's standard of doing something exceeds the standard the Dominant may have, than the other way around.

But no doubt some folks will disagree with my views on this matter.

I agree.  How many times in my past with relationships did I learn something from my slave and made it my own (giving her credit of course)?  And who do we learn from when we go out to leather events?

I can't do pedicures, but it's a safe bet anyone I own will know how to.
The protocol that I follow in the basic lifestyle teaching (for public events) was written by a submissive

and the list goes on and on

no need to apologize, chellekitty, this slave doesn't post here to be agreed with

~and with that, this slave will respectfully disagree that the list this slave presented is merely "personality traits", because, whether it comes naturally to you as to your "type" of personality or not, those things are still learn-able skills that this slave witnesses subs/slaves come to the boards asking to learn how, to further their submission and/or please their Dom/me/Master/Mistress/Owner.

i fully agree that they are learn-able traits, i too had to learn them...i would actually argue that with the exception of obedience, none of them are even leaning towards being submissive traits or skills...all people should have patience and confidence, and should be able to respectfully communicate and relax, and it is helpful for all people to be graceful...regardless of status, orientation, or gender...

But i don't think i would find my Master so lovable if he had any grace in him to speak of.

My Daddy does not value these skills.. he hires some of those things out, and he can cook better than I can... and he rather enjoys it because he can beat me with his spoons before he uses them...lol.

I can do those things, he just doesn't value them that highly because he can find someone else to do them so readily

Navigation- both the ability to follow directions and read a map, and the ability to give directions
Welding- stick and tig, at a minimum
Public speaking- more generally the ability to speak effectively.
Some sort of physical displine- martial arts, Ballet, yoga- the abilty to live in ones body.
Hot towel stright razor shaving ( the male equivlient of a pedicure)
Cooking- while I rarely allow a woman to cook for me (they get their estrogen in the food, and it's saps ones manly power), she should be able to feed herself in my absence, or help out if I entertain.
Driving- I expect to be able to nap while she drives- not clutching whiteknuckled.
Basic mechanical skills- at least able to follow disrections and use basic hand tools.
painting- house type, not fine art. I suck at painting.

I find navigation skills to be a double edged sword. They must be coupled with the skills of respectful communication and patience in order to be useful.

charlotte...who has learned this the hard way.

then you'll be arguing those finer points with yourself, because this slave never presented the list as a set of exclusively "submissive" skills.
they were presented as "useful", in response to the OP.

I have learned several skills that have helped me and benefitted hubby.

I am a germ freak and cannot stand dirt grime or clutter and I always have kept myself on a strict cleaning schedule, so I didn't need any training on that.

I sucked at cooking when we met, and since then I have learned to be competent, and successfully prepare his favorite meals.
I have learned how to throw a memorable dinner party. NOTE TO MKNOTTERTAIL: I can fold a napkin into a lotus, or a swan or anything else, for that matter. This also includes menu planning, wine selection, proper background music, floral arranging, etc.

Probably the most valuable skill my hubby would say I have learned is my ability to completely override my gag reflex. I've never tried it, but I could probably swallow a sword.

Oh- and to have a completely bland look on my face when he chooses an outfit for me to wear and it doesn't "work" like a Winter skirt with a pair of Summer sandals. I just "grin and wear it".
