So I was pondering the deep implications of this thread (which I am sure will be deleted, or at least heavily edited, as soon as some mod sees it): http://www.collarchat.com/UNCOVERING_A_FAKE%21%21%21%21%21%21%21%21%21%21%21%21/m_144237/tm.htm, and while looking at the profile it occured to me that my first thought was that it was a fake anyway.

How did I know? What were the tell-tale signs? Could this knowledge be used for good (or for awesome)?

So I'm a thinkin' and a ponderin' and I though that perhaps this would be an interesting topic for a thread of its own. So come on, all you longtime profile trolls...what signs do you look for that tip you off on fake profiles?

I'll put my signs in a separate post...

G’day Taggard, I don’t look through many profiles, probably because I’m not actively hunting at the moment, but when I do look though one or two I don’t have any specifics to look for. I’m seeing the whole picture and matching it against my own interests and requirements and then it’s a matter of Gut Feeling. Old faithful has never let me down or led me astray yet in anything. I start off assuming that people are honest and work backwards from their, depending on my interest in that person. If I’m looking at possible building some relationship for discussions, then it doesn’t matter too much. If its for something more personal then I just take it slow.

When you ask a Dom what he thinks of structure, and he starts talking about his apartment.

He thinks that "shibari" is a Chinese rice dish.

He boasts,"I am an excellent Master,I read ALL of the Gor books!"

He has a very special collar, just for you. He wants to give it to you, right now. You'll be his forever and ever. You met him five minutes ago.

You ask him a question that makes him uncomfortable, and he says "You aren't a real sub."

You almost got it right...

Shibari = up market b-b-q
Collar and cuffs = parts of a shirt or jacket/coat
Leashing = to rent out
Dungeon = local jail
Flogging = something you do when alone and horney
Needle play = what tattoo artists do
Blood play = picking scabs until they bleed
Bondage = dealing with government bonds
Chained = hooked on “Unchained Melodies”
Slave = working your arse off for low pay
Subby = some one who sub lets space.

As promised, the things I look for in spotting fake (or at least temporary) profiles (N.B. I am particularly experienced with the female sub profile, so my comments are particularly aimed at such.):

1) Nude shots with full facial view. I mean, come on. I have some nude shots somewhere, but I am sure as hell not going to post them on my profile! And does anyone know a bigger attention whore then me???

2) Names that could be auto-generated by randomly combining a number, a body part, a letter that represent a word, and a somewhat crude adjective (i.e. OneAssHot, HotAss1, SlutTits4U, WhoreishTitsF4F, etc). I figure the amount of time you spend picking out a name roughly reflects the amount of time you are going to keep it.

3) Hot young slaves who are ready to give up everything to be your 24/7 cum bucket. I mean, they are out there, but you find them in grocery stores, not BDSM personals sites.

4) People that photoshop the same picture to look like two pictures (http://www.collarme.com/bdsm/v/158482/default.htm#)

I am sure I will think of more, but that is what comes to mind right now...

"verifiedbdsm" or some silly registration thing that suggests filling out some forms on the Internet or having some scene person "verify" you skills by seeing you at a dungeon party. I mean, those people HAVE to be real, right?

I have a hard time imagining fake people showing up to a dungeon party...maybe department store manequins...or something...

You've never been to a party where newbies show up. Watch..ask questions to never see them again?
Or worse yet those newbies are undercover cops?

We have them all of the time in California, perhaps you are more blessed than we are in New York.

Someone can show up at a dungeon party and walk the walk, talk the talk and have their "gear" with them, it doesn't mean they are safe, or not someone just showing up to get their "verification" and be done with it so they can start prowling for people to scam or otherwise take advantage of.

And at the same time, there are plenty of legitimate people that would never set foot in a dungeon party, and the fact that they can't get "verified" on your site is just as ridiculous. I actually thought the site was a parody.

I try not to tell others that they are fake or wannabe's. There seems to be alot of that going around and given the variances of the BDSM interest checklist (no such thing there are too many), its pretty much impossible to tell someone else that they are not real.

That being said, I would classify those being REAL or FAKE simply by one lithmus test. Do they actually do what they say they will do and carry it through. That's about all.

One of the worst things IMHO that you can say to an aspiring Dominant or Submissive is that they are fake or "not real". You may just have excised someone from the BDSM community that could have been something great, with some time to learn.

I was recently...ahem...corrected by a slave that I contacted about perhaps seeing if We were compatiible with what she was looking for. I was told, quite..ahem...solidly that I should have known that she had a Master by the "Slave" being part of her name. News to me since alot of people use Slave in their name and arent currently owned. SHe apparently took it upon herself to correct these people. How could I not know that this was the way things were? Wasn't I *REAL*!?!?!?!? Apparently her way, was the real way, Subs are slaves that dont have masters, and once they get one, then they are allowed to be called slave. Wow.

Real or fake, its all good. YKINMKBTOK...Your Kink is not my Kink But thats OK.

whether someone is fake or not doesnt matter in the long run. I try to keep the perspecitve. But I do keep track of the ones that demonstrate this admirably.

Things like this just blow my mind...

Does a drivers license prevent accidents? Does a passport transfer you magically to another country? If a person provides references and they check out, does it make them safe?

A verification site is what it is. No more, no less. If you don't get what it is, then it really isn't my job to explain it to you.

I used to go out in the local scene Taggard-played very well-I practiced.

I hung out with these people from 1995, until about 2002 when I finally had enough.

Eventually I got burned out on the politics and poaching games-and Let my local dungeon membership lapse-it wasn't fun for me anymore.

And I have been accused of being fake for not having that membership-the club owner pushes belonging as the be all and end all of being "real."

Of course, this validation is all about encouraging people to contribute money to her shoe fund-but where does it end? I think the biggest way to spot a fake is, One....

They will yap forever online, but when it's time to get eyeball to eyeball-they evaporate like a fart in a tornado.

Two-when it comes to anything hands on,they don't know squat.

Three-they are so caught up in an obvious fantasy, that it's truly ridiculous. REAL people realize that you have to balance vanilla life with bdsm FUN.

Now your little online site IS pretty ridicuous. I would NOT vet anyone with a refference, that I had not met and extensively tested in real life.

Why do you? Do you realize the import of aproving someone who could well kill a poor bottom who took your word at face value?

This is NOT a pat little game of 20 questions!

Words do NOT equate to deeds, and it is FAR too easy to use search engines to beat questionaires. Especially when all they have to do is input key words and phrases from YOUR list.

I repeat this over and over to people.

Get up,turn off the computer. Go out and MEET people.

It's NOT real till it is REAL.

While I certainly understand this opinion, you should know that there are many who hold a contrary one.

When I first started it, I would get countless emails from folks wanting to help. Folks who had been doing it for a year, folks who ran their own professional dungeons, folks with reputations that mean a lot more than mine.

I don't do squat for it now (other then post the URL in my sig) and I still get emails from people who want to help.

The demand is there for such a site...I am just too lazy (right now) to do anything about it.
