This is the first you've ever heard of paraphrasing?

"Groan?"
GM, take a good look at the Lefties.
Do they ever look "happy" to you?
Is is possible for someone who's constantly complaining and thinks that everyone is "conspiring" against them to be in a good state of mental health?
If they're going to be walking through life with a constant chip on their shoulders thinking that everyone's "out to get them" that's not conducive to good mental health at all.
After years of that type of thinking it's no wonder that paranoia and distrust are their constant companions. That's no way to go through life. Fourty years ago the state hospitals were full of people like that.
Try to imagine two coctail partys, one with Liberals, one with Lefties.
I think the one with Liberals would be a lot more fun!
And yes, Conservatives and Liberals do have many overlapping issues on which to unite but you may want to discount my optimism.

It's not even accurate to suggest that is paraphrasing any position I've ever supported.

It is in DIRECT OPPOSITION with everything I've ever said, and wholly dishonest to attribute them to me, OR suggest they are a restatement of ANYTHING I've ever said.

You're just feigning indignation because I proved you wrong about how "the framers" viewed terrorist problems. Dude - if you don't want Bush to go easy on terrorists why are you advocating juries and attorneys for them when the Geneva Convention allows for firing squads. Why do you pretend that "the framers" would have handled this as a petty law enforcement issue when it's obvious that they would have just had them eliminated as they deserve.

Thank you, julia, that was very well worded and I think extremely honest. Thank you for your candor.

I don't believe that the Right was affected by Bill Clinton as badly as the Left was affected by George Bush though, we simply disagree on that point.

Many didn't like Bill Clinton, and were even outraged by his scandals, but I do not believe that many people on the Right became depressed (like you say you did).

I think that the differences are significant

quote:

ORIGINAL: juliaoceania

By Drastically impacted I am thinking you meant that we are all depressed, bitter, and angered by the years that Bush spent in office... I was reminding you how Clinton haters were drastically impacted by his years in charge... nothing more.

At one time I allowed myself to be drastically impacted by the Bush years.. those were wasted years of my life that I found better spent being joyful and happy with the beauty  I see around me. It helps that I do not watch TV or actually listen to Monkey in The Middle speak.

I remember very distinctly the hatred and vitriolic spew... I remember people handing out 3 dollar bills with Clinton's visage on them. I remember people being "outraged"...

I see no difference... and one self reporting poll is not going to change my mind

And I remember Clinton saying he "remembered" Black churches being burned down in Arkansas in the 1960's.
Only problem was that there were no Black churches burned down in Arkansas in the 1960's.
It's pretty bad when a Democratic Senator called Clinton, "an expert liar." And former President Jimmy Carter called the Clintons,"despicable human beings."
I wonder if Hillary will ask President Carter for an endorsement? lol

Popeye, I merely said "groan" to illustrate the disconnect in your statements. First you say lefties are unhappy. Then towards the bottom, you state that lefties and righties are actually simliar. Therefore, if lefties are like righties, then righties are also unhappy.

Love,
GM

GM, not neccessarily, Righties have more money than Lefties as a general rule.
And I said I have trouble telling them apart, not that they're similar.

I havent read any of this... but I saw the lil blurb about who is unhappy.. and I have to say Aint no body happy..

How in the hell could anyone be happy? If they are.. they are morons.

We as a nation have gone to hell in a handbasket.. who could be happy about all the shit we are going through because of morons?

If they say they are well adjusted, or happy maybe they are better liars.. now THAT I would believe.

Bold face added.

I remember growing up, being told that crazy people are the ones who don't think they're crazy.  By my high-ranking conservative family, mind you.

From a general stand point, though, are not those considered to be on the right typically more inclined towards religion, which is, scientifically speaking, a rather servere psychosis?  Not that other points can't be made, but the presense of religion and similar factors in such great numbers, coupled with the claims that they are of "execellent mental health"?

I mean, don't get me wrong.  Republicans often do things that are helpful, and I lean right more often than not.. just.. well, we're insane creatures.  If they don't realize that, isn't that only a testiment to their insanity and ignorance?

Plenty of Democrats are highly religious. Bill Clinton is a Southern Baptist, I do believe. Carter's literally a preacher man. Gore, Kerry, Hillary - they all seem to have photo-ops of them going to church packing the biggest bibles that they can carry. And a hell of a lot of Conservatives (like me) aren't religious at all. Most South Park Conservatives hate religion!

Hah, I suppose it's difficult to remember that sometimes.  One always hears about how Bush's references to religious duty, then about how Democrats are pushing for things that aren't ethical to his religion.. it's been a rather damning point for the GOP's credibility to secular indepedents, really.  As one who doesn't keep up with politics, nor cares that much for partisan conflict, I'll admit, the sterotypes are pretty much what I have to go on for guessing.  (Though I'm not so foolish as to mistake the sterotypes as anything more than just that.)

Out of curiousity, do you happen to know a source for such figures?  (Religious/spiritual ratios for particular parties?)

I wonder - is there any documentation out there regarding the rates of suicide or alcoholism by party affiliation? That would seem to be a good way to judge which was more stable.

Of course it should come as no surprise currently that the Right would claim to be more mentally stable since for the last 7 years they have been driving the Left crazy with their policies.

That seems like it could be an enlighting study.  Perhaps conducted at various bars across different areas, weighed against that area's voting record?  Then we'd have to account for drinking at private residences and such, too..  Even with the difficulties taking the poll, though, the results would be noteworthy.

Highlights an interesting point, too.  When we talk about mental health, are we referring to stability (such as being able to continue and live up to one's own perception of a healthy life) or sanity (being able to objectively perceive and react with reality)?  Or are we to consider multiple factors, such as both stability and sanity?

I decided to look it up, and here's what the PEW Research Center website said - Republicans as a whole are a little more religious than Democrats, with around 78% of Republicans describing themselves as "very religious" vs around 71% of Democrats describing themselves as "very religious". When it's  between Liberals and Conservatives though, self-described Liberals are far less religious, with only about 59% describing themselves as extremely religious compared to 81% of Conservatives.

But those numbers to me don't mean that anyone really has the right to crow about being secular, or free of religion or whatever.

quote:

Religion, Ideology Increasingly Connected

Over the past 15 years, religion and religious faith also have become more strongly aligned with partisan and ideological identification. Republicans and Democrats were equally likely to express strong personal religious attitudes in 1987 and 1988; the same percentage in both parties affirmed the importance of prayer, belief in Judgment Day and strong belief in God (71% in each). But over the past 15 years, Republicans have become increasingly united in these beliefs, opening up a seven-point gap between the parties (78% vs. 71% of Democrats).

Because of the "Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory", you can avoid liability for your libelous defamation.

I think all the people reading this have a little more insight into the kind of person you are, and therefore how much credibility to extend to you going forward.

Thanks for looking up the information for me.

I have to admit, I'm rather disturbed that that many people describe themselves as "extremely religious".

Ah wells.  I suppose it supports the point about humans being naturally crazy.
