It wasn`t "Clinton`s" sanctions.It was the world`s sanctions,including the US(under Bush I,Clinton and Bush II).

What`s your point, anyway? That the murderous middle-east policy of Bush II ,is somehow better than Clinton`s?

luckydog1 -> RE: Bill Clinton opposed war in Iraq from the beginning? (12/22/2007 1:06:15 AM)

Now that's just a sad weasel, Clinton could easily have stopped the sanctions, and you did not adress the bombings at all.  Clinton could have declared Iraq in Compliance, but he didn't.  He bombed 3 days before the turnover of Power.  Yes, owner it was the entire world that thought Iraqis desered to be killed because Saddam was refusing to comply with the UN resolutions over disarmament and WMD.  Bush did not make this stuff up, it was US policy before Bush, as well as UN policy.  The numbers of Dead Iraqis are bieng thrown around quite a bit in these forums, so HOW MANY IRAQIS DID THE CLINTON POLICY KILL THROUGH SANCTIONS AND BOMBINGS?

Answer your own question, then; I know this is the season of children acting in nativity plays, but you don't need to bring it to the boards.

So, minus the drama, let's hear it, how many Iraqis died as a result of Clinton's actions?

Politesub53 -> RE: Bill Clinton opposed war in Iraq from the beginning? (12/22/2007 5:39:08 AM)

FB, although part of my response was off topic. The question still remains. Surely if the Washington Post is a disreputable source for one story, then its the same for all its stories ?

Something i have also been thinking about. It is possible for any world leader to be against the idea of war, yet have to engage in it if all other options of failed. Most of the bombing Clinton and Blair ordered was in response to non compliance with UN resoloutions and attacks on US forces and facilities overseas.

Iraq attacked us overseas? I never heard that one before...

He may talking about Iraqi efforts to target and shoot down US aircraft over there, julia, but a-course, I'm guessing [8|]

I would like to see what casualties were suffered from these attacks and what facilities were hit[;)]

Edited to add, the way in which he posted that comment was extremely misleading... I am no fan of Saddam, but Saddam was never a threat to us, ever.

Just because the Iraqis were bad shots doesn't mean they'd get a free pass [:D]

A hypothetical: if Saddam still had WMDs (which he did not), would that have made him a threat?

To me, the answer is very, very possibly, it would have. And as I've said, I do believe that most people felt he was seeking them, or had them, including many, if not most, of the world's leaders.

The only WMDs he had we armed him with, we knew he had no WMD and we went in there before the inspectors could find that out too.

We should not have fought the first Gulf War, we should not have imposed sanctions, and we bombed Iraq more than in their "no fly zone", but expected that there would be no attempts to strike back? I find that a bit odd.

There were many other dictators that were more threatening than Saddam, yet we squandered our resources on this quagmire.... geesh... there are more evil dictators than Saddam in this world that our government has given support to, in fact it did not bother our government that Saddam was an evil fuck as long as he was our boy.

All about the oil... it is just revolting.

samboct -> RE: Bill Clinton opposed war in Iraq from the beginning? (12/22/2007 8:07:33 AM)

Level-

Depends on whether you believe the BS about WMDs.  Chemical weapons aren't WMDs, but nuclear weapons are.  Anybody with nukes is a threat- but nothing less than a nuke is significant.

Sam

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one, my friend. [:D]

Oh, I would think we would expect retaliatory shots. Now, again, I disagree about the first war, and the sanctions.

There were many other dictators that were more threatening than Saddam, yet we squandered our resources on this quagmire.... geesh... there are more evil dictators than Saddam in this world that our government has given support to, in fact it did not bother our government that Saddam was an evil fuck as long as he was our boy.

This, I agree with you on, julia. We've backed some monsterous assholes.

All about the oil... it is just revolting.

Good morning, Sam. I did believe they had WMDs, and I do tend to consider chemical weapons at the very least WMDish lol.

Where did i say Iraq attacked the US Overseas. If you look i said the " The bombings Clinton and Blair ordered " They  ordered several attacks on places other than Iraq, in reply to terror attacks.

I concede my post could have been clearer though.

juliaoceania -> RE: Bill Clinton opposed war in Iraq from the beginning? (12/22/2007 8:37:00 AM)

I am sorry I misunderstood.

Sanity -> RE: Bill Clinton opposed war in Iraq from the beginning? (12/22/2007 9:02:10 AM)

It's about the oil?

American soldiers are smuggling it out in their canteens?

And here I thought that we had taken Iraq's oil wealth from a greedy billionaire (Saddam) and given it to his people...

Thanks Julia but i actually agreed with you. I could have been clearer in my post. Someone had mentioned the attacks on Somalia and Afghanistan and i was refering to those as well.

Yes, you really could have been clearer [:D]; just kidding, but I misunderstood, too. Sorry for answering for you, as well.

Politesub53 -> RE: Bill Clinton opposed war in Iraq from the beginning? (12/22/2007 9:40:37 AM)

Level thank you... Its a web forum and these things happen.

Sanity, yes it is indeed partly about the oil. If not oil then what else ?  Its well known that Iraq didnt have any WMD`s and Saddam didnt help matters by making it look like he had them still. Iraq started to trade oil in Euro`s, if everyone followed suit the effect on the US economy would be a disaster. This is because to obtain the Dollar most European countries need to trade with America. This is why the US have a deal with Saudi that the Saudis will only trade oil for dollars with other countries.

Sanity -> RE: Bill Clinton opposed war in Iraq from the beginning? (12/22/2007 10:07:07 AM)

I've heard that myth too. Do you really think that the reason that the United Nations held Iraq under sanctions all through the 1990's and into the 2000's was to protect the dollar?

Is that why you think that Tony Blair went along for the liberation of Iraq, just to uphold the almighty dollar?

Get serious...

I'm sorry, but that's just absurd - regardless of how many people fall for it!
