There is a difference there.  For what is allowed - I read the TOS.  Sometimes I fucked up and the mods would let you know. 
Pissing others off is a different matter.  If it was a case of just doing or saying something people don't like - it is no different than off screen hey.  Usually, I find that if you disagree with someone or they do with you - if they 'matter' then they come to you privately and discuss it.  That is how you discover the people that count and those that do not.  If someone is happy discussing even though they disagree with you, that rocks.  Those who aren't ready to discuss aren't worth the time to worry of.

I am always baffled by this usage of singling out 'packs' or 'cliques'.  Just because I happen to agree with something, does not mean I am their friend.  I do not know most here.
 
I never suffered when I arrived here or on any message board I participate on save one - and its not a problem even with that single one.  I have good days, I have bad days.  You just move on with your life, not worry what others think.  And be responsible for your own feelings.

You present yourself differently though, part of why you're not being targeted as much, I'd say.

The heart of the OPs post was that new folk should not be inundated by the powerful pre-existing personalities already established in a negative light.

Key word - should - indicates an emotionally-based opinion.  Everyone is entitled to their feelings.  However, to expect others to change for you is just plain unreasonable.  Approach the whole with reason instead of a lot of feelings and hey, presto.  You're taken a bit more seriously.  Why?  Well, a person who can show that they have an opinion they can express clearly and can debate reasonably is accepted more readily than the angry person who just keeps pounding away with what they feel is right.  Look at Socrates.

Maybe people could be kinder.  Maybe they could be worse.  Maybe, maybe, maybe...is not what is.  Take it, evaluate it, accept your own conclusions, don't let others shape said conclusions by pushing your buttons.
