Constantly announcing one is taking the high road generally is just another form of the low road.

MzMia -> RE: Do you try to take the High Road on Collar Me? (12/7/2007 10:37:13 PM)

Ahhhh Stella!!!  Happy New Year my sistah girl!
I have learned at my advancing age, that if something does not feel right,

you have a right to feel those feelings.
KWIM?
These days it is not cool to say things "urk" you or you are offended.

Don't we have a RIGHT to be offended any more?
The intent might be harmless, but if you are offended, then well you have a right to be offended.

I am thinking of some other sayings from the old South, so I must just let it go.

Thank you so much for the kind post~
One of my points here, is we have a right to be offended, and hopefully this is one place we do NOT have to pretend we are NOT offended.
This post is how you handle being offended and then taking the high road.
Thanks Stella!

I'm afraid that TheHeretic was correct ; it is time to study (even if I am slightly disturbed by someone knowing my personal schedule on a message board).

However you think of me is fine; still, you must accept my point that this sort of thought is interesting, regardless of your probable distaste for its source.  If you're legimately interested in "the high road", I'd suggest you look over your response on this thread; I can assure you, you made such responses to someone who was sincerely disinterested in upsetting you.  Still, I do believe you're upset, even if it's perhaps not entirely polite to pry as much as I have.  The OP just seems passive aggressive to me, and I can tell you have a personal distate for me which extends a bit backwards in time.  Probably because I'm pro-life and such?

In any case, it wouldn't be taking "the high road" to say, "And I hope you have a lovely evening tonight."  Even if I actually meant the words, it would ring hallow to your ears and act as an insult.  I'd encourage you to consider this point.

Well, it depends on how you look at it.
People announce all sorts of things, we have a right to say and announce whatever we want.
Thank GOD this is America.
I am taking the high road.

You get the last word, study hard young man.

Does the irony of that not strike you?

MzMia -> RE: Do you try to take the High Road on Collar Me? (12/7/2007 10:43:29 PM)

nope
Peace and Blessings to you.

It's certainly odd to see such malign words put to such insidious use.  If only there was more time.

"Peace", I suppose; even if the word is twisted by such pretense.

As we approach the New Year, are you going to attempt to take the High Road in Life,
and particularly on Collar Me?
I

I usually plan on taking the road that gives me the most fun without me ending up looking like an arsehole.

Question:

If I take the low road, and you take the high road, who get`s to Scotland first?

Old Scots Song, Copyright Unknown
By yon bonnie banks,
And by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,
Where me and my true love
Were ever want to gae,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

Oh! ye'll take the high road and
I'll take the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye;
But me and my true love
Will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

'Twas then that we parted
In yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side of Ben Lomond,
Where in purple hue
The Highland hills we view,
And the moon coming out in the gloaming.

Oh! ye'll take the high road and
I'll take the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye;
But me and my true love
Will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

The wee birdie sang
And the wild flowers spring,
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping,
But the broken heart it kens
Nae second Spring again,
Tho' the waeful may cease frae their greeting.

Oh! ye'll take the high road and
I'll take the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye;
But me and my true love
Will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond

Thanks for sharing, I am humming it now.
I fucking love it.
If I felt better, I would dance a jig to it.

I actually prefer to take the low road because that will ensure the most spotlight to this attention whore. Plus EPGAH, you know - he's awesome. Ok, made no sense. See?

Love,

You are so damn cute. [:D]
Here, take all my money.
Many here prefer the low road, and hell it is certainly okay.

Makes life more interesting, I have been on the low road a lot myself in life.
I am TRYING to now take the damn high road.

marieToo -> RE: Do you try to take the High Road on Collar Me? (12/7/2007 11:15:04 PM)

I don't neccessarily take the high road around here at all, however I learned a long time ago that there are certain comments/opinions with regards to certain topics that the masses invariably misinterpret, or simply cannot fathom, therefore I simply pass those topics up if I foresee a shit storm, or one of those two-day marathon arguments. I just don't have the energy for it.

To all but a moment, and placement their in that moment.

*steps in*

Can we please stop pretending that the world is sugar to make ourselves feel better?

I sometimes agree with LA, sometimes not, and sometimes just toss a playful banter her way.  In this case she has it bang on.

You, MzMia, have repeated the high road phrase over and over.  I feel like I am being subjected to Doctor Phil, and that happens to offend me.

Let's be clear on one thing:  I'm not trying to condemn you for your outlook.  I strongly disagree with it, though.  For one:  -this- *looks around* where I am, is Canada.  There are some Europeans and Australians here as well, if you hadn't noticed.  Thanking God that this is America, to me - a non-religious non-American - is highly insulting.  I don't want to delvolve into any debate about religion here, I'm just saying that your commentary is inappropriate - to me.

That leads to my second point.  No two people can view the exact same thing the exact same way.  Even if they agree on one facet of the whole, they may have different motivations for doing so.  If you enjoy history, you know that disagreement and debate are rife in the past, and more often than not, it serves a purpose.  Questioning makes us wiser.  Arguing with passion allows us to express the fervency of our beliefs.  To touch back for a second...you might feel strongly about Jesus and God.  This former minister's son does not.  Nor would I take kindly to any flambuoyant display of "God is great", were it to be thrust in my face - yet a person who -is- fervent about God, who feels happy and one with the Universe, might very well cross that line.  N'est pas?  So not only does verbal debate strengthen views, the strength of said views can also step on toes...

...which is hardly, as you have termed it, the high road, and ultimately encourages the very forms of expression you are repressing.

That's my third point.  I'm also not big on censorship.  Others have covered that here adequately, and you have chosen to ignore them in favour of your own view - I believe the term for that is "passive aggressive".

And to address your OP directly - your colour and your age are labels, nothing more.  They are part of who you are.  If someone makes a derisive remark to you about either, you have full control of how that affects you.  Not addressing the slight is not always the only way, nor is is the better or best way under all circumstances.  Crude as it may sound, if women didn't speak up, where the hell would feminism be today?  Or slaves, for that matter?  So would I take the high road?

*reads back*

Guess that's a hell no.  I wouldn't advise that you try to convince others to do the same, either.  It's one thing to lead yourself down the primrose path, quite another to try and coerce others to join you.  Someone could get hurt by only turning the other cheek.

Hopefully, you read this and address it with something less condescending than was levelled at others.  I highly doubt it, because I have little faith in passive aggressive people to be open and blunt.  It's not in their nature.  Failing that, I hope someone else reads this and understands that what you're offering is not what it seems.

It is what we do in the privacy of our own world when no one knows that really defines if we take the high road or not.... because only we know how close we really come to taking the low one...lol.

Like I said, it is much easier to take the high road if one is closer to it by focusing on things that are positive over the alternative... and trying to read people as having the best intentions even if you suspect that they are being nasty...especially if it can be read more than one way

Level -> RE: Do you try to take the High Road on Collar Me? (12/8/2007 2:46:33 AM)

Sometimes I'm nice, or polite, or I attempt to be positive.

Sometimes not. Sometimes I'm an asshole. Sometimes I'm wrong-headed and stubborn.

A quick thought; just because someone makes their point, and does not post further, does not make it the "high road".

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Do you try to take the High Road on Collar Me? (12/8/2007 2:50:59 AM)

Things only have power over you, if you allow them. The choice is yours, as to whether you are in control or follow the manipulation of others. This is what keeps me out of debates that I see will bear no fruit. High road? Sometimes yes and no. Many consider me uncivilized because I speak my mind, and pretty bluntly, so I was built to fight in the mud. It all comes down to whether I feel it is important enough to get dirty.

Live well,
Orion
