We certainly have different ideas on what the high road is.

In this case, for ME, it means not engaging in what will surely be a nasty fight, endless
debate, possible very ugly on-line confrontational situation.

I don't actually consider the "high road" to be such a lofty place.
On-line it can mean, making a short to the point comment, then getting the hell off that thread!
IMHO it could mean not stooping to a lower level, or engaging in a sure-fire nasty debate.
[;)]

I have had to adopt a similar action on threads in the past.  Perhaps it was a year or so ago that I read one thread in particular that was highly offensive, racially charged, and instead of blasting off continually, I opted out of the thread.  For me that was the high road, and one that allowed me to continue to stay active on Collarme and let the other posters do the same.  It saved me from anxiety, anger, and high blood pressure.  I was pretty sure the exchange that could have ensued wouldn't have been about communicating or a meeting of the minds, but just endless arguing.  I'd make the same decision again under similar circumstances.  Why read stuff that puts me in a bad place?

What a wonderful response!
This is why I started this thread, to see how other people handle things on here.

You articulated very well, what I have been trying to say!
Just NOT reading threads and posts made by posters displaying negative energy,

is indeed the high road!
As you said "Why read stuff that puts me in a bad place?"
Also, why continue to respond to it either?

MzMia -> RE: Do you try to take the High Road on Collar Me? (12/8/2007 8:27:36 AM)

Ah happy pervert, I said I am attempting to take the high road.
I can still get a few jabs in and take the high road.
If I don't say something, I will end up being road kill for those like you.

There's that word again; "offensive."
Anally-retentive, politically-correct people love to use that word.
They go through life "offended" at everything and by the people in their lives or people they hear and what they say.
Those are the people I hope (are) "offended" by me!
You know, the kind of people the Three Stooges used to throw pies at. "Stuffed shirts", they called them in those days. "Well I never...!"
They don't consider themselves part of the Hoi Poloi.
And I wonder just "who" gets to determine what this mythical "high road" is? Is there like a "secret committee" or something?
Monthly meetings? Do they get paid for their opinions?
And how would they get picked to be on such a committee?
"Hey! I found a great new potential political-correctness committee member!"
"She hasn't had a bowel movement in a decade!"
It's fun watching or listening to anally-retentive people, they don't even *realise* that they're doing it! lol

Popeye this is so true. Some people unfortunately are so anally retentive if you gave them an enema you wouldn't even get a single drop back and you'd lose the rubber tubing as well.

It's not defamatory if it's accurate though, which is the critical point that you are missing. Then again, if you're still mad after all this time maybe you didn't miss it at all... they do say that nothing stings quite so badly as an unwelcome truth.

I must apologize. I unintentionally stated:

"That doesn't excuse the lack of integrity shown by the fabrication of libelous quotations and their malicious and defamatory attribution."

When I meant to say was:

"That doesn't excuse the lack of integrity shown by the fabrication of defamatory quotations and their malicious and libelous attribution."

Thank you for your attention.

( And *that* should answer the OP's question.... )

That's right, I can smack a few girls around to shut them up and still not be an abusive asshole, right?

TheHeretic -> RE: Do you try to take the High Road on Collar Me? (12/8/2007 10:07:33 AM)

Absolutely, LA.  The "high road" requires that you simply stand there and get slapped around.

I agree that declaring an intent to take it can be interpreted as pretty damn snarky.  If you've ever done any off-road driving though, you'll know that sometimes the only way out of the mud is to get a lot flying while you climb the hill.

Sanity -> RE: Do you try to take the High Road on Collar Me? (12/8/2007 10:21:42 AM)

Velvet I am glad you caught that one.
That was a case of someone trying to play an online interrogation scene.
Did you enjoy it?
You have been around here long enough to know that the "fun" bunch will show up,

and want to play.

You forgot to add those that will bait you and continue to bait you, so you can join them
on the low road.
You can take the "high" road and still speak up for yourself, especially with online bullying.
Or is that possible, Heretic?
So many children here enjoy playing their little games.

Hi MzMia

To me taking the high road does not mean not arguing a point. It means arguing the point without attacking the other personally. In that context I always take the high road. Even if attacked I try to limit the vehemence of my response.

I can’t tell you how many times I have honestly and seriously considered another’s post….written a response disagreeing but politely… only to have the poster than say something like…That’s crap…or you must have sawdust in your head.

Not that I have not responded …I think the worse I have ever done is call someone pompous.

I understand I will not usually change the person’s mind I am arguing with but I hope our debate will perhaps give third parties a new way to look at the subject.

There is one big problem that is often overlooked and that is the medium we are arguing in. Without the ability to hear word inflections or see body language it is very easy to misinterpret a post. There have been times when I have mistaken a response as a personal attack and I’m sure some of my responses have also been interpreted that way.

There are people in the forum I disagree with on many levels but I still respect their viewpoint and like them… and like debating with them.
Butch

If people did not come here and attempt to start crap on this thread,
I would have to believe I had died and went to heaven.

You have to expect people that show up only to kick sand in your face.
I still think you can say your peace, and then continue on the "high road".
The "high road" does not mean you must let people kick you in the ass,
 and not say anything.
Well Sanity?

i agree with this butch, well stated.

LadyLegs -> RE: Do you try to take the High Road on Collar Me? (12/8/2007 10:51:50 AM)

It seems that a lot of disagreements on the threads turn to personal attacks, and not responding to the attacks would seem to be the high road.  But if it is possible to remain on point, there is no reason to stop posting, to my way of thinking.

I will answer this question for the last time.
I am not upset over it, actually I had forgotten about it and was enjoying the
topic of the high road.

If you want to argue, you will have to move on along.
So shoo fly.
I am enjoying the topic of the high road.
I will not engage in negative energy.
Have a wonderful evening young man.

I stopped at this point, and certainly do not want to flame in add anything incendiary to this thread. But, if you had forgotten the post CuriousLord is asking you, why did you use it as part of the opening post of this thread of taking the high road. That is why some get accused of not "taking the high road".  Actual questions are mistaken as goads, and flamatory statements when in fact they are not.

I just ran across a thread and many responses. which as a woman of color, who is over 40, that I found very offensive.

I did get a tiny bit nasty, but then I attempted to take the "high road", and decided to not
respond or even keep reading that thread because it could have become ugly.

Was that not part of the OP?  That is what CuriousLord asked about.

I often see your "curiosity" in action.
You can call it curiosity if it makes you feel better.
I would call it something else, but then I am taking the high road tonight.

So again, have a wonderful evening young man.
[:D]

RFL, hell if this is what you call the high road, I take it all the time.....doubt that is how you actually meant for that to come across, when I do it, I get called snarky.....

Sanity -> RE: Do you try to take the High Road on Collar Me? (12/8/2007 10:58:14 AM)

I think that if there is such a high road, then it must be awfully damn narrow because no one seems able to stay up on it for very long. People looking down their noses while calling others "children" or "childish" isn't any better than the behavior they're trying to condemn, in my opinion.
