My transgender friend Stella Baker arrived at the Atlanta airport, today, Thursday, Dec 13, 2007. She was coming to spend Christmas with me. She was told she was undesirable and detained until the US could put her on a plane to the UK. Ms Baker is a playwright, wikipedia can tell you anything you would want to know about her work. She has a teaching certificate, speaks five languages, has done wonderful work in Poland, and with the homeless in the UK. She had US money in her pocket, and my home to spend Christmas at. I am disabled with a terminal disease, I have a 5 year old adopted child that I needed help to care for, and possibly arrange guardianship for with Ms Baker. What happens now? I have no other family. Does my child go back into the system from where she came from? Sexually molested at 2 years old, beat until she carries the scars. Stella wanted to be there for my child. I have no other family. But remember she is transexual. The Bush government finds her undesirable. As she sits in her holding cell tonight, I sit here, ashamed to be part of a country that finds her undesirable.

This is what happened last night.
A night in a male prison for a transgender female
My friend Stella Baker spent last night in the Atlanta jail, in the men's wing. Her passport states clearly female. Her medical records state clearly female.
They stripped her. Photographed her penis, demanded she put on male clothing. Denied her medication, until I called the British Consulate for the fifth time.
I stayed on the phone in the middle of the night with a woman named Clair from the British Consulate. There was no number for the American Consulate.
I feel truly blessed to live in the home of the free. A land of tolerance. Where all races are welcomed. What a frigging joke.
Stella has been all over the world, and told me she had never encountered a government agency such as ours except in third world countries.
Let's stop and think folks. The war our government is waging is not very different than Hitlers.
The entire rest of the world hates us. We are no longer a leading country. Our dollar is worth less than half of a Euro.
Right now I hate my country. Come on Big Brother and get me.
Christian Nation. Isn't that how Bush describes us?
I think I'll go puke now at the very idea.

Wow. So many controversial issues in one post. I think I'll keep my hands off this one.

Possibly, was she turned away because she is so well traveled and has been to some destinations that have caused them to question?

I take it she has legal representation?  Have you or anyone for her contacted the british embassy/consulate and got them to visit her?
On what grounds was she arrested?

It has come back that the final charges against her are
The US government believes that she was trying to enter the US in disguise of a woman, while in fact she wanted to enter our great country and work as a man.
Bullshit! On first detaining her "they" stated she was undesirable to the US because she was transgender. They would only address her as male. They now have made her put on male clothing to wait in to leave the US.
I have spent hours on the phone with the British Consulate. Unfortunately their hands are tied at this point. She has no legal representation.
I have contacted a leading newspaper in Atlanta and they are checking into running a story.

Bombard your congressman with calls & emails, expecting some intervention. Are her credentials in order? Passport? Visa?

Oh my god, how horrible. You must try and get some sort of civil rights legal representation; they will advise you.

I am so sorry, so very sorry. You should call local news channels, keep calling til someone pays attention. This is the type of story that will attract that attention but it has to be kept out there. Ah Stella I am so very sorry, I can't imagine how awful this experience is.

This is agonizing and outrageous, especially since there isn't much to do about it.

On the face of it, this seems to be an atrocity. You might also want to try Village Voice.

Most definitely contact the Atlanta news bureaus, there are more than enough of them to create a stir.

Also, isn't the Atlanta area one of those very TG friendly areas?...Meaning that there are alot of TG people in the Little 5 area and such? (what i've heard from others in the past anyway)....Sounds like if you got the news and the community involved they may be able to make a Christmas miracle happen for your friend.

i am sooo sorry to hear about all of this that ya'll are going through.

It's all about the media. Calling your representatives won't matter. Their office will just pigeon hole your concerns. Now, if you can smear a little egg on their faces, you're golden. Good luck and I hope all ends well.

Edit: I mispoke. Calling your representatives is effective if an only if it's an issue they care strongly about and your concerns will bring them enough positive publicity. Otherwise they are much too busy with photo ops and brown nosing other "powerful" people.
