The US meddles and antagonizes in everyones affairs- so much so that we the US create our own boogiemans and then set to slay them. Historically we do this as a matter of buseness as usual. we are not to liked or welcomed be the larger international community and it has little to do with our "success" our trinbkets- it is our failure to mind our own business.

Quite frankly we [in the US] are lucky the folks [or other countries] talk to us and befriend us.
"They " are trying to make sense of the madness- as are many of us on this board.

Anyhow- thanks for the candid debate.

I do believe you have it wrong pahunkboy. The policies of the US are not what make us disliked. It is just pure jealousy. Through all the history of mankind and civilizations the powerful…successful…..superior … have been disliked because of fear and envy.

Countries like Great Briton…France… Germany all in there time were at the top of the heap of world powers and they meddled just as much if not more than the US ever has.

Soon the time will come when the United States is no longer at the top of the heap… then we can come to CM and snip at the next great power out of envy.

Nope. While *every* Nation has it's own agenda, the simple fact that the US is torturing prisoners in their custody is proof enough of the U.S. Governments unworthiness.

There is no reason to support, and every reason to oppose a Government so out-of-control, that it tortures prisoners.

Butch,

I have a similar outlook as in your above post, although I would take exception to one part of one sentence.

Personally, I think the odds are - absent some true unpleasantness - that the US will pretty much remain on the "top of the heap" for quite awhile.

I guess it depends on one's definition of "soon", though. [:D]

That presumes the said country has a lower standard of living- some peoples want a simple non mechanized country.  Others are happy with the society they built and cant imagine the lack of safety net here.

AAkasha -> RE: My two impressions of America (12/19/2007 9:25:15 AM)

The lesson to be learned here is that you need to do a lot of research before you plan to immigrate to another country. The border people will punt you back in a heartbeat if they think there is ANY chance you are coming here and stay.  All discussions, including information on your web site, should have been kept to a simple point: "I am just here to visit friends.  I have no intentions of staying."  In fact, with regards to your surgeries, you should have said, "I have great doctors where I live and am in the middle of a long procedure, why on earth would I want to leave my own country?"  They stacked up a solid case against you regarding why they felt you were a risk to stay.  You even admit that's the ultimate plan.  If you had consulted with an immigration attorney (to plan your legal transfer to the US) they would have recommended a better way to cross the border.  They probably would have told you which border to enter through, just to be safe.

It's not just here, either.  When I went to Canada for the first time to just visit the man who became my husband, they detained me for a half hour and searched my luggage.  They seem VERY interested when people go to meet "friends from the Internet."  They wanted to verify that I had a job in the US, had no intentions of staying in Canada, and that my interest in him was not romantic.  This was my first experience with immigration and after that, when I talked to attorneys, I realized how serious that stuff can be.  I had NO intentions of staying in Canada, had no REAL idea that my relationship with him was going to evolve the way it did, so all my answers were honest anyway.  When he came to the US to visit, he was equally grilled.

Dear stella,

I am appalled and outraged by your treatment from the U.S. officials.  Do keep the fire burning under the politicos and your story circulating in the press.  Thank you for the link to your Website and please keep us informed of any legal updates and ways we can assist.

(I had a computer malfunction and have been off line for a while, apologies for coming into the conversation late.)

Peace,

Just an idea, does anyone think it would be best if the statue of Liberty was removed from it's present location looking out across the sea welcoming people no matter what they may be,symbolising hope, to a museum of America's great past.

There if that was done, it would send the message that America is now 'full' and not so welcoming to others.( I believe the statement at the bottom of the statue says “Give me your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breath free”) have now been replaced with a handwritten sign saying; 'sorry, full'.

I believe perhaps people in knowing of the existance of Lady Liberty think the US is free to come to.If it were not there the message would be different.

Who knows?

That would disappoint a lot of people since the United States accepts more legal immigrants as permanent residents than any other country in the world.

I think we should leave the Statue of Liberty where it is but make a couple of changes. First remove the torch and replace the hand so that she's giving the finger to the world instead. Just in case that doesn’t get the message across, we should change the words at the bottom to read: Bite Me!

The finger would be appropriate tho the torch could be a malito cocktail.

The USA immegrates more people then any other country- so it isnt entirely true....

At the moment we should return the statue to France- we dont need it.  The very dark things we tagged the Soviet Union of doing- we are now doing.  We were supposed to be the good guys!

Instead of communism- we have corporatism... a corporate fasict empire.  "security" mean the function of the corporate machine. "freedom" now means  good for corp interests.

So while we "won"  - we lost.
at least for now.

According to global statistics and national census - Canada - not the US - is the highest per capitia in the world - so it does depend how you define more than any other country.

Stella i read your link and am slightly confused. You say that when the officer spoke to Ms Lupton she told him you were comming for christmas. Surely she must have mentioned about your play ? If not how would he have known about it ? Also in the very first paragraph he said that you said you were going to stay for an undetermined length of time, which you agreed was true. That clashes with the idea that it was just for christmas. One question i have always been asked when entering America, is when i intend to return, i have always been made to show a return ticket.  Halley said on the other thread the officer kept refering to you as he, but in your link it was always Ms Baker or "She", which seems polite enough to me.

On behalf of all rational, open minded, clear thinking, and sane Americans I would like to extend my deepest heartfelt apologies to you, AND your SO.  Simply put, the US government is now run by immature and closeminded assholes who cannot see anything other than their own principles.  You, in your glorious transgendered state, offends them because you represent something they are genetically terrifed of recognizing:  CHANGE AND DIFFERENCE!  Please accept my apologies for the idiocy of the American government, and please do not take the idiots of Homeland Security as indicative off all Americans.  You are most welcome here at any time.

Ah, the toilets issue!

[...]

What it boils down to is fear. Totally ridiculous fear on the part of genetic women, probably more serious and real fear on the part of the owners of the toilets by way of possible lawsuits they might get involved in for permitting, or at least not preventing a genetic male to enter.

The fear of genetic women is truly ridiculous really.

I couldn't agree more. Back in the early nineties I had gone to Madame JoJo's in London, where Ruby Venezuela ( http://www.thewayoutclub.com/panto05.htm ) bumped into me in the Ladies'. I felt threatened by her jewellery, but did I care she was a man in women's entire in a female lavatory? Not one bit. (Though she did have the balls - huh... - to ask me what I was doing there!)

As for Stella's story, I have nothing to offer her but my sympathy. There are exceptions but I don't think Immigration Officers anywhere are particularly courteous, so her story doesn't surprise me entirely.

Bit of a thread-jack here ... but:

My view is that those wanting to "protect" American, are in fact destroying her. The fondest tradition of this nation, was to take those that other people did not want. This wasn't done to be kind ... I am not so nieve as to assign such lofty motives to my home ... it was done to establish a huge labor force, and for a time, it made the United States and industrial giant.

Apologies to my friend Popeye, and many others ... but in my view, you have things backwards. We have everything we need over here, to be, yet again, the world's greatest industrial power ... we have the raw materials, the money to invest, the land. We only lack one thing, and that thing is a large low-wage labor pool.

Those playing the protection game, talk about protecting the American worker. What a pointless, point! They want to protect jobs, that we don't even have? Allowing open immigration will not cost any Americans their jobs ... they will cost Chinese, theirs.

Again, apologies for the jack ... we now return you to your regularly scheduled griping about the Atlanta airport.
