Good luck on the fast, i wish you success with it.  Is this to loose weight or to detoxify the body of toxins?  For all i have read about dieting, fasts aren't all that successful as they seem to put the body in starvation mode and screw around with the metabolism rate, resetting your set point.  You also run the risk of developing gall stones.  i did a fast program for three months, years ago..... you get fast results but more times then not they don't last - i wish you better luck than i had with it.

Yeah, I could get hit by a bus.  Odds are that I won't.  Odds are much greater that I have some sort of heart attack based on my genetics.  Odds are that it's a supportive move for someone I love who's dealing with serious health issues and is also doing the fast.  Odds are it gives him some peace of mind that I'm helping to heal some of my own health issues.

Odds are, you'd rather be eating cookies, and on your deathbed you STILL won't be wishing you'd spent more time fasting.

Sha na na na na na, live for today.

You know Dave...whatever.  The funny thing about this all, and something I never expected from people in my real life was just this attitude.  People have looked at us like we have three heads and like we're doing something extremely unhealthy.  How can it be bad to only be putting 100% certified organic fruit and vegges in your body in a form that's extremely easy to digest?  Expensive. Yes.  Bad?  No.  We've discovered that we have very high radon in our home and in our water.  The man grew up in a highly industrial area.  We are detoxing our bodies for these reasons.   Why don't you go eat a whole bunch of cookies, go to a doctor, get put on a pill that may easily cure any symptom you have, but not the cause and then deal with all the lovely side effects of that medication that usually causes more problems than the one it was trying to solve.  I try to be proactive and responsible for my own health without putting all of my faith in a doctor who only sees me as a number.
Rant over.

I live in the land of prime rib hun, talking about prime rib to me is like talking about smog in LA, water in the ocean or sperm in a bukakke movie, its classified as "tourist feed" over here, in fact theres so much i'm pretty sure we pave a couple streets with it, Ceasers makes prime rib topiaries for thier garden, we have showgirls covering thier tits with prime rib, the reason we dont have any sports teams here is because we have prime rib tag, all we do is throw meat at each other, it's been classified as so much fun any other sport looks like shit in comparison.* Right now i'm making notes on prime rib stationary with a prime rib jerky pencil which I stole from the MGM grand, by the way that lion habitat? all dried prime rib, thats right, we make habitats for fucking CARNIVORES out of fucking prime rib, and even fucking lions and Tigers got tired of it!

Now I gotta go shit, I just got a new pack of prime rib toilet paper, 2 cents a roll.

* Cept for  MMA fighting, but only cause theres blood sometimes...just like good prime rib.

Well said  I've learned the hard way over the last 12 months that doctors don't know everything, even the good ones, and not all of them are good ones.

Aileen.....

I can usually not eat while I'm baking, thank God, cuz I double the batches!  A suggestion....freeze what you can and get rid of the rest FAST!!!!!!  I'm guessing that you can drink water?  If so, just keep a gallon handy and chug that, seems to help me.  And keep some of the really decadent stuff for yourself.....get through the fast, and PIG OUT!!!!  The only bummer may be is that you won't want to pig out.....may be good, may be bad.

And if all else fails, there is duct tape for your mouth!

Umm, I can't give any positive words of encouragement about the fast thing, but a basement fan is a cheap and easy way to drop radon levels.  Also- not having a lot of faith in how some of that testing was done makes me ask- did you get it done by three separate labs?  There are some scams out there- we offer radon abatement programs- which also means that you need high radon levels to begin with.

I see you live in NJ.  My geology isn't brilliant, but high radon levels are generally from a granite with a streak of uranium mixed in.  I thought most of NJ was swampland- which doesn't have a lot of granite in there.  Or am I mistaken?

What's going on- As the uranium decays, it produces radon- which is a very heavy gas.  It's pretty slow to mix (chemically unreactive) which is why it's easy to get rid of- it's generally seeping in from the basement- hence a fan to exhaust it works pretty well.

If I remember the cancer effects of radon- it generally attacks the lungs- not surprising since it's not going to accumulate in other tissues too readily.  What this means is that you really want to avoid cigarette smoke or other nasty particulates (diesel exhaust etc.).  Conversely, diet is probably not going to have a lot of effect here- the best correlations between cancer and cigarettes are a function of how much the human smoked, not how much they weighed.  Heart attacks are another story.  Changing diet affects things like stomach cancer, colon cancer etc.  If I had to guess- I'd bet the best things for the lungs would be a little healthy exercise in fresh air.  You're kinda screwed in terms of energy efficiency- a nice tight house that doesn't need much heat also allows buildup of solvents from things like the carpet or furniture as well as cooking which is probably what you don't want.  Rather than spending the money on organic juices (OK, if you like the taste or like buying organic I can see that.) getting some HEPA air filters is probably a good bet- and change them regularly.

Besides- stress is probably not good for you in other ways- so take sensible precautions but worrying about stuff you can't control probably isn't helping.

As an FYI- I got my doctorate in a carcinogenesis research group (looking at chromium(VI) and let me tell you that the description of chromium(VI) in Erin Brockovitch was so far off it was funny- well, I was the only one in the theater laughing, but I guess I'm a weirdo) if this makes you feel any better.  One last point- chemicals cause disease in the same way they cure them- there's a specific mechanism for how a chemical (radon isn't really a compound- it's an element) reacts with the body.  Taking aspirin to cure a tummyache isn't going to do a lot, but it'll work pretty well for a headache.  Changing diet probably isn't going to do much for lung cancer, but it might do something for digestive tract cancers.

HTH,

Sam

Aileen  its obvious that you have cared well for your body in your lifetime.  A fast is a wonderful way to clean the toxins from the body and when our bodies are clean, our minds are crystal clear and strong.  Which means that your mind, the most powerful thing you possess, is 10 times stronger than the cravings of your stomach.  A few cookies cannot defeat what your mind gains when it works well.  as you cook, breathe in deeply through your nose, out through your mouth - absorb the wonderful smells.  Focus on the feel of the dough on your fingertips and the warm, internal sensation of making something for others to enjoy, allow the love you feel for others to flow into everything you bake.  you can honestly focus your will on the sheer sensation of cooking and give yourself permission not to need more than that.  Remember not to bake on an empty stomache, have yourself a glass of juice or some cider with a bit of nutmeg and cinnamon to sweeten it before you start baking and sip as you work.  that will help to satisfy your sweet tooth so that you can stay focused.

luna wishes you the best

Haha.  No worries.  I laughed when I read about your idea of blending the cookies.  Believe me.  I thought about it.  I just have a weakness for Christmas cookies.
I have a fantastic juicer and it takes me about an hour in the morning to juice everything and prepare the teas for the day.  Then it's just a matter of following the program and drinking what I'm supposed to drink at the times I'm supposed to.

My area of Nj is all rock.  I'm in Warren county and along with being on bedrock, we're also the dumping ground for the ice age.  I can't dig deeper than twelve inches in my garden wwithout hitting large rocks.  We hit solid bedrock at about ten feet when we drilled our well and we had to blast to get our foundation dug for the home.  We have two radon pipes in the basement whick lowered the initial reading from about 75 down to 2.  It's started to creep up again and now we register at about 6.  We're thinking the issue is the water coming into the house and will be changing out our water ffiltering system since it's about twelve years old and from what we've learned has come to the end of it's lifespan and may actually be somewhat radioactive at this point.  The company we're using to lower the radon issue is highly rated and has a great reputation in the area.

This issue my man may have may possibly be lung related.  We'll know more on Thursday when we get some test results.  We don't smoke.
