I'm not trying to make you look bad. I'm saying that I don't believe you get 51 MPG in your Ford Taurus. And I still don't. You're the only person who knows whether it's true.

Is there really anything more to say about this?

I'm telling you this because you always try to make me look bad.I might not post again because of this. You don't like it when someone knows something that you don't and you try to discredit them.I am sick of it!

Hi guys! I would let the Taurus mileage debate rest for now and just say I am looking for replicability. I will snoop around a bit and see if I can find any other Tauruses getting similar mileage. If I find some getting mpg in the 40s, I would not consider 51 to be too outlandish. If I don't find any that are even breaking out of the 30s...well, you know.

I want to throw out some other thoughts. One reason (actually, a set of reasons) why cars pollute less, in addition to those already mentioned, is improvements in combustion. A lot of research on combustion chamber size, chamber shape, and valve placement has resulted in engines that burn the mixture more efficiently. Fuel injection has played a part in this mixture improvement, too. The air/fuel mixture is now a lot less 'lumpy' than it used to be...or in some cases, deliberately lumpy, but in a very controlled way--all to improve the burning of the fuel in the cylinder.

Bob

You are partly correct. What you are talking about is 1950s technology. The Hemi head design is what most engines are patterned after and that was put into production in 1951.But was first built by Arden for an overhead valve conversion for the Ford Flatheads from the 1940s.The Hemi design along with High fuel pressure that couldn't be done with a carburator is what is used today. As far as air fuel ratio an internal combustion engine needs I think it is 14.3:1 air fuel mixture to run at its best. Not lean and not rich. That was done with a carburator. But with fuel injection you get high pressure.
So it goes back to computerized fuel injection.
A higher compression engine like a race engine in a race car can burn fuel cleaner than a passenger car.The reason why high compression isn't used today is the same reason it wasn't used from the begining-1950s.Poor gasoline. In the 1950s-1960s we had good gasoline and high performance cars. We all know what happened in the early 70s.In the 90s they started to build high performance engines again with old and new technology.

Yes, I doubt if another will be found. That was my point. Should be able to find some in the 40 mpg range, though. How often do you calculate your mileage?

Good news! The price of a barrel of oil got closer to 70 bucks today.

Bob

Three times in the summer and once per season for the other three seasons.
Instead of looking for around 40 mpg you should look lower.I gain 7mpg by not running the AC.So that puts me close to 40 without taking into account the complete tune up.
Another thing is when ever you use something that requires electricity you put a load on the alternator. When the alternator is loaded it takes more engine power to run the alternator. That means less gas mileage.Remember that when you play the radio, run wth your lights on,heater,AC and on and on.
In the winter I get 22 mpg. That is more what you guys are looking for.

This whole thing has gotten out of hand. So now it's not "I get 51 MPG in my Ford Taurus"; it's "I can get 51 MPG in my Ford Taurus under certain conditions, but in the winter I get 22 MPG." (It seems to me that your techniques for improving gas mileage should work as well in the winter as in the summer--after all, you're not running the AC in the winter either.)

We can go on and on with us, or we can just accept that I'm never going to believe you get 51 MPG in your Ford Taurus under any conditions. Personally I think it has become a pretty sterile discussion.

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention: Smithsonian Magazine happens to have an article in the current issue about biodiesel. One woman gets almost 200 MPG in her ordinary car just from adding a second fuel tank that runs on converted vegetable oil (which she obtains from local restaurants).

Back in the days of the last energy crisis, you know - when we were complaining and there was near rioting because gas prices approached $1.00 / gallon, one of my friends bought one of the first Yugos. Inspired by an old joke, every night we would go visit his apartment complex and put a few extra gallons of gas in his tank, just to hear him brag how he got over 100 miles per gallon. After about a month of this, we started siphon a couple of gallons every other night.

Sure enough after a month of that - he starting complaining to us that after the "break in" period the mileage sucked! And just like in the joke, he took it back to the dealer and complained.

Maybe YTTM, has the same kind of "evil friends" but they are only around in the summer?

I wouldn't have believed that, either. A 1986 Yugo gets 25/31 MPG (city/highway):

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymake/Yugo1986.shtml

You know, there ARE conventional (i.e. non-hybrid) cars that get relatively good gas mileage. Several of them happen to be made by VW. The New Beetle (diesel) gets 38/46 MPG (standard transmission). The Jetta gets 36/43 (also diesel, also standard transmission). The Golf gets 38/46. The Honda Civic is also good at 35/40 (and that's with AUTOMATIC transmission). I have an '02 Toyota Corolla that I'm fairly happy with (30/39, automatic).

This shows how little you know about cars and gas mileage.Refer to my post about winter. When you run the heater it runs through the AC.It takes more electricity to run the heater. And as I said about warm up times being a half hour.Living where you do you know nothing about extream cold weather.Where I live it is very similer to Alaska. In the winter it takes more effort to move a car because the oil in the transmision is colder and the drive axle is colder.Sometimes it is so cold that a car sounds like it is going to break in half. The seat will be rock hard.
Yes. it gets cold and it snows where you are but not like it does here.Northern Maine is often the coldest place in the 48 states. And sometimes ties with Alaska.
Not everyone can live here. Most people like it here in the summer.
After visiting my home town near the Canadian boarder a man by the name of Audubon decided to form the audubon society. It is a very harsh place in the winter and pretty in the summer.
If you don't think warm up time affects mileage leave your car running over night and see how much gas you used while you were asleep.

I am well aware of Biodiesel.Where I work we run Biodiesel. We pay 40 cents more for it over diesel and we don't get any better fuel mileage. But it does take the smell out of the exhaust. It shortens the life of the injection pumps. And you have to change the fuel filters often or the engine will stop running on the road with no warning. This will be the first winter running biodiesel.

If you can get by without AC in the summer, I don't see why you can't get by without heat in the winter.

But I'm sure you'll come up with yet another story.

LOL Lam! I always thought Ford stood for "Figure On Repair Daily"... cello

Oh? I thought FORD stood for:

Fix Or Repair Daily
Fucked Over Raunchy Drives
Found On Roads Dead

subfever

or: Fucked Over Rebuilt Dodge : as my boys would call them actually I had a f150 that I just loved and it did pretty good on the gas. now have a standard van and hope when get a job can get a smaller vehicle, any suggestions Master drives a Malibu and it seems pretty good on gas, i was thinking pt cruiser, gas here in central Ms is about 1.60/gal, for the middle gas type, and I think gas is going to go higher, esp around labor day weekend and than taper off for a bit than in nov and dec rise again for the holidays. I noticed when I came to ms in feb the farther south from wis I came the cheaper gas became and when I went back in june the gas became more expensive the farther north I went somewhere about mid Illinois it became more expensive, think little sis up in wisconsin said they are paying something like 1.63/gal now that is north central wis. yikes anyone for a moped, LOL told master I could just see the freeways littered with those things.

I used to be a huge ford fan back in the seventies. Then it was called. "First On Race Day" Now I prefer "Found On Road Dead"

$2.54 a gallon in Florida and still climbing. I drive a 2001 Honda Civic now and love the 30/36 mileage that I am getting.

IMO. The problem with a lot of the USA cities is that they are so spread out. People must drive further to more populated areas to find better jobs. There is no quick fix for the petroleum problem we are experiencing right now. What really irks me is that the oil prices they are reporting are futures. We are using gasoline that was refined months ago, but the pricing is based on the futures....so who is getting rich here. hmmm Texaco stock is looking mighty promising.
