Gas here in northern Indiana hit $2.80. I filled up, to the brim, Sunday night for $2.66. I just got off the phone with my Dad in Nashville TN and gas there is $2.50. People here are saying it will be $3 by Friday.

Oil companies engaging in price-gouging?

Who would have thunk it...

UtopianRanger -> RE: Gas Prices (8/31/2005 12:23:09 AM)

O'Reilly said on the radio the other day that the actual cost to extract the oil from the ground, refine it into gasoline and then transport and market it, doesn't exceed four dollars and a little change per barrell.

However, once it hits the market under the pretext of an artificial scarcity, the term ''price-gouging'' becomes a classic understatement.

MrThorns -> RE: Gas Prices (8/31/2005 6:54:01 AM)

I still think it's funny how Bush claimed that he could do nothing about oil prices. He can't recommend a cap on the price of gasoline? He can't develop an energy policy that encourages alternates to fossil fuels? Or is it more that he wont do anything to curb rising gas prices or decrease our dependence on fossil fuels?

$2.87/gal in Phoenix the other day

I'm not GLAD about all this, because there is going to be a lot of hardship in the near future, but I can't help noticing that people are getting more and more pissed off about it. That has to be bad news for the Republican Party, and bad news for the Republican Party is good news for America.

Thorns & L&M,

This one who voted Republican last time for one. I believe that at election time you only really vote yes/no for the current direction of the country. I'm ready to vote NO, but just hope it won't be wasted on one of the third party non-entities. I still don't see anyone on the horizon who is anything other than a contrarian. I'd like to see some kind of real plan of action. Although I don't agree with the ultimate consequences of many of his actions FDR came in with a plan. He wasn't just contra-Hoover.

That said, it's difficult to give credibility to a party who presents Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has a spokesman blaming Bush for Hurricane Katrina. Article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-f-kennedy-jr/afor-they-that-sow-the-_b_6396.html

Were they making a counterpoint to Pat Robertson's ignorant rant about "taking out" the president of Venezuela?

Speaking of our "foreign friends" lets see how many come offering aid to us. Maybe some of this bread we cast out on the waters will come back:

Israel $2.56 billion annually in US Foreign Aid

Egypt $1.835 billion annually in US Foreign Aid.

Jordan $192,814,000 annually in US Foreign Aid.

India $143,699,000 annually.

Pakistan $300,000,000 annually in US Foreign Aid.

Not including the Military Financing of $4.8 Billion. Broken down as follows:
Israel $ 2.2 billion grant ($580 million procurement in Israel of defense articles and services)
Egypt $1.3 billion
Pakistan $150 million
Administration $40 million
DOD Expenses Arms Export Control Act $367 million

Let's not forget some of these programs, does anyone feel ANY of these are working?

Andean Counter drug Initiative: $731 Million
International Narcotics Control $328.82 million
International Development Association $850 million
United Nations Environment Program $323 million

Lordandmaster -> RE: Gas Prices (8/31/2005 12:01:51 PM)

I don't agree. I vote for the people I think will do the best job of representing my interests. The difficulty for me is choosing between Democrats and Greens. Green candidates are closer to my views, but that doesn't necessarily mean they will be more successful than Democrats at making those policies a reality. But I can't understanding voting Republican when things are good and not voting Republican when things are bad. Either you believe in that party's platform or you don't.

I also don't agree that having a plan is always better than not having a plan. A bad plan can be much worse than no plan. I don't really think it's fair to say that the Democrats don't have a plan, though I concede that their views are harder to encapsulate in witty slogans. And blaming Hurricane Katrina on Bush is counterproductive--BUT climatologists have long been saying that hurricanes are only going to get worse with global warming, and Bush obviously doesn't give a shit about global warming.

Does anyone have any good links/info on global warming being a cyclical, natural progression of the earths atmosphere, instead of being unnaturally influenced by humans?

onceburned -> $6 per gallon in Georgia (8/31/2005 6:38:53 PM)

The governor had to issue an executive order to stop price gouging.

Try Wikipedia - the most plausible alternative theory is the solar variation theory.

I had to help deliver a vehicle today at work...as i was driving only four blocks from there...i saw a Mobil station that had $3.07 per gallon. Gadz! this sucks.

To make a long story short, he owned the Texas Rangers, used his Dad's political connections to get the municipality to build a new stadium for him, and then sold the team at a massive profit.
Worse than that - he he used his political connections to invoke eminent domain to size the property the stadiums was built on, paying way below market value, then sold out leaving the Rangers with a multimillion dollar lawsuit over it.

The old pumps and dump, that his grift. He's used over and over again, using his connections to pump up the stock prices, then seeling out before the stockholders figures out it's all a hype, and are left holding the (empty) bag.

This is just a bigger version of it.

kisshou -> RE: $6 per gallon in Georgia (8/31/2005 7:48:07 PM)

well I just went and filled up , prices are over 3 dollars a gallon for the cheapest grade at stations that still have gas left. I wonder if now is the time to invest in bicycle manufacturers stock. There is a big rumour that gas is over 6 dollars a gallon in Georgia since hurricane Katrina hit.

In the UK - we are paying approximately 92 pence per litre - thats around $1.62 a litre.
Theres about 3.7 litres in a gallon.
So thats over $ 6 per US gallon.

True, but the distances people drive to get to work and back around here every day would get you halfway across Europe, and there is very little mass transit, i.e., no convenient alternatives.

DesertRat -> RE: $6 per gallon in Georgia (8/31/2005 7:51:59 PM)

When I was a kid it was 25 cents/gallon. But then, cigarettes were 20 cents, and I grew up in a three-bedroom brick house that my folks bought for $12,000. When I was 25, I bought a brand new TransAm for $5,150. Man.....I am fucking OLD!!

Lordandmaster -> RE: Gas Prices (8/31/2005 8:31:50 PM)

No. In fact, there is solid evidence against this. I could recommend a kabillion things to read about it, but you could start with this article from the March 2005 issue of Scientific American:

http://www.sciamdigital.com/browse.cfm?sequencenameCHAR=item2&methodnameCHAR=resource_getitembrowse&interfacenameCHAR=browse.cfm&ISSUEID_CHAR=F9214CAB-2B35-221B-641728E52ACE63F4&ARTICLEID_CHAR=F9374686-2B35-221B-635B1D2A02A8B6D5&sc=I100322

You'll have to pay to read the full version online, but you should be able to find Scientific American in any library.

Thanks for drawing attention to this! It's a huge point of contention for me when someone compares America to Europe, without first really looking at the big picture.

Not to mention, the whole European economy is set up to function under a value-added tax system. So in the context of the cost of petroleum products, it's an erroneous argument when someone compares America to Europe, because their social programs are all paid for with revenue generated from a tax on goods and services.

Just hit $3.20 here....and is supposed to go up more by tomarrow.

Mercnbeth -> RE: Gas Prices (9/1/2005 10:28:30 AM)

In CA and Los Angeles in particular we were always at the top of the food chain. But seeing this sign this morning was if nothing else - honest.

When there is more demand than supply for a product, then higher prices are a MUST-
