Yay, somebody remembered Boxing Day!
Why doesn't the US celebrate Boxing Day? Hell, I never even heard of it until my daughter was born on it, lol.

In fact, there is a difference between solstice holidays and Hanukkah.   Hanukkah celebrates a historical story involving a fairly bloody incident in the history of the Jewish people; the fact that it occurs near the Winter Solstice is merely coincidence.  In fact, Hanukkah is a minor holiday in Judaism with the importance highlighted only because it occurs in proximity to the major holiday of the predominant cultural religion in the West.

i think 'happy holidays' is alot more polite

When I am in US, if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas I thank them because they wish me well.
When I am in Israel and someone sasy Happy Chanukah I thank them because they wish me well.
Lets make a deal you make all the Jews in Israel say "Happy Holidays"
And Ill make all the Christians say "Happy Holidays" , lets not worry abou the 5000 or so combined years of tradition.

Hi Joy,

There is an Eid ul Adha thread here begun by Master69 if you'd like to read it. Myself and mine celebrate both that and Christmas and we're both Muslims.

To the OP take a little joy and goodwill wherever you can get it these days. When wished a Merry Christmas, someone is being nice to you; damn what a concept to have to choke on. Eid also follows an historical event, as does Christmas (only on the wrong 'chosen' date to soothe the Roman pagans of the day and incorporating Odin). To me, whatever someone's religion, I see the greeting as an act of goodwill seen far too less of in the ''West.'' While I am not  Christian, I can and do enjoy much of the holiday along with the spirit of the season. I am less likely to hear Merry Christmas in Morocco though I am in the US at the moment. I still, at home, do lights, a buffet Christmas eve, bake, make candy, purchase gifts and have a Christmas dinner. Gee, none of my family and friends in an Islamic country seem to have a problem joining in and basking in the warmth of a day devoted to family. If someone who knows me personally didn't say happy Eid (L'Eid Mubarak) then perhaps I'd be offended, perhaps. Though if a total stranger wishes me a Happy or Merry Christmas, I smile and say it back.

Sheeese I love to make wassail with wine at holiday time but not whine and I don't think you'd make a very good drink. [:)] You can be offended all you like and that will only make you miserable, not those offending you. It's a waste of time and energy.

Oh and P.S. There were happy chanuka threads when it was the time of chanuka.

batshalom -> RE: Happy Chanuka ???? (12/22/2007 10:45:54 AM)

Hanukkah was 12/4 - 12/12 this year. I celebrate Christmas because Santa doesn't care what religion I am (and it's fun for the UM's). And I like the pretty twinkling lights.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Happy Chanuka ???? (12/22/2007 10:53:02 AM)

I wish everyone Happy Winter Holidays. At work, its Happy Holidays, since I am wished Merry Chirstmas about a million times a day. I figure, I am wishing them well for the holidays, regardless of which they celebrate, or even fif tey dont celebrate any of them... Its a seasonal version of Have a nice day on a larger scale.

Ive given up worrying about being wished a happy chanukka. Aside form the fact that my non-jewish friends never actualy knew when it was since the jewish calender and the standard calender arent the same... it is the thought that counts. I get holiday cards, and my friends are polite enough not to send me jesus loves you stuff whe they knew i was a practicing jew.  It always meant a lot to me that they had the forethought to go get me a card that wasnt part of their boxed set just to make sure I wasnt offended.
Now that I have joined a church they are far more at ease remembering the holidays and sending the same cards they send everyone else.

Bullcrap. Just because you deem it minor, does not mean the millions of Jews who celebrate Hanukah deem it minor. It is not highlighted simply because it occurs in close proximity to Christmas.

How incredibly offensive of you to post that. I will be sure and tell all my Jewish ancestors how unimportant their holiday is next to the major holiday of the Western culture.

Well, how nice that you post your ignorance for all to see.  It is a minor holiday.  I am a practicing Jew with a fair amount of education in our religion.  "Minor" does not mean Hanukkah is unimportant (your word, not mine).  I simply meant that the holiday is a lesser one in the canon.  Along with Tub'shvat, Purim and several other holidays, by the way, and in contrast with the "big Three":  Pesach, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur (and of course, Shabbat, which is clearly the most important holiday).  And yes, in the West Hanukkah is pretty clearly overemphasised because of its proximity to Christmas...or does your brand of uniformed Judaism include a Hanukkah bush, presents on every day, and "Chanukah Charlie"?

Sexyred, your post clearly demonstrated that rudeness and ignorance knows no season.  To everyone else, a happy holiday whatever you celebrate.

Yes. It's grown under special lights in Canada, or imported from Mexico and for 8 nights we chop off little pieces and burn them while inhaling the smoke...

And how incredibly offensive of you to get on a soap box when you have no idea what the hell you are talking about!

First of all it is a minor holiday in the Jewish calendar. In fact, the very books from whence the story came ( Maccabees 1 & 2) are not even Jewish Cannon, they are
apocryphal! Chanukkah isn't even celebrated by many Jewish sects especially the more Orthodox ones because they feel it has little or no religious significance. Do those Jews offend you?

It is not Rosh Ha-Shanah. It is not Aseret Yemei Teshuva. It is not Yom Kippur. It is not even Sukkot, Purim or Passover as far as religious Jewish holidays go.

I love Chanukkah. I love the music, the food, the games and the fellowship it brings ecumenically but any serious study of the holiday will show it as a modern (and for the most part American fueled) Jewish Alternative to Christmas. It is somewhat culturally significant in modern Jewry but it is hardly historically so. A fact all of your Jewish ancestors already know.

DarkDaddyZ -> RE: Happy Chanuka ???? (12/22/2007 10:22:12 PM)

My ex slave is Jewish and while we celebrated Hanukkah she also informed me that it's not a major holiday.  But we enjoyed it and I love make Latkes and Chicken Soup! Yummy!

And thank you for saying so.

I am Roman Catholic but that doesn't mean, I cannot enjoy the festive atmotphere of Chanukkah. After all, fot the first 100 years of my Faith, all the celebrants were Jews too! Well... most of them..., Paul was out trying to convert the Goyim....lol

I thinbk mext year they run together, with Chanukkah's last day falling of Christmas Eve, I love when the run together like that.

L'Chiam and Merry Christmas Everyone!

Then that is your 'problem'.  You are responsible for your own feelings and how you react to what people say - not anyone else.  Your post is religious intollerence.
I find it quite disheartening to see someone so inconciderate that they reject feelings of warmth or any blessings.  I am a christian - I attend events and celebrations of all religions and when my friends or aquaintances shower me with blessed hanukkah, diwali, vaisaki or offer greetings during ramadan, then I accept them with grace and thankfulness that they consider me that important to mention in their blessings.

ghitaPVH -> RE: Happy Chanuka ???? (12/23/2007 10:53:23 AM)

Shrugs..I find it rather depressing when everyone finds everyone elses holidays intolerant. We celebrate Yule, and also Christmas. Christmas mainly to make my parents happy and its fun for the kids. And I like eggnog. The majority of the traditions we keep each year are for Yule, but seeing as how Christianity stole most of them centuries ago, no one really notices anyway.

I love this time of year, and I really dont care what anyone wishes me on the street or in the grocery store. Its rather easy to tell they are wishing me well with good thoughts and thats really all that matters.

Happy Yule!

summerblossom -> RE: Happy Chanuka ???? (12/23/2007 10:59:32 AM)

It doesn't prove anything. I never set out to be offended, it just happend.
