not to hijack, but then to hijack....

i work for a school system.....emails started coming in from every level about the first of the month reminding us to be sensitive and careful about what we said.....it suggested, but came short of mandating we do the happy holidays to be safe......

this had to be printed and distributed to every employee by each principal....

luckily i manage a cafeteria at a small school, where we are more like family....and we still wished a Merry Christmas to all......and we bought presents for the jewish teachers and they accepted them in the spirit that they were given in.   and we ate their yucky ball soup that they brought to share with us earlier in the month.

even they admit, christians have better food at this time of year[:)]

i hope everyones holidays are filled with love and laughter.......no matter what you choose to celebrate

Yes, they have pissed the mod off.  Interestingly enough, lately i see the 'waiting approval' with quite a few and not necessarily because they have crossed TOS.

hmmm... maybe we have a 'waiting approval' control freak as a mod right now?[8|]

Why the passive aggressive swipes at mod 11? And when was being a "control freak" necessarily a bad thing for a dominant person? (just joking there).

You know, if people spent half as much time looking within for the answers to why they have problems posting on forums like CM, we would see a lot less [awaiting approval]s around here, not that there are not those of us that have been publically spanked that are not willing to take responsibility for it when we have broken the TOS... but I would venture to say that if any of your buddies have gotten moderated, they probably deserved it... and if they told you they didn't, they probably are not giving you the full story.

You would think there would be a little more gratitude for the time that the mods put into this board, making it an enjoyable place to hang out and share ideas for the majority. In fact I have been on boards that banned people for their first TOS violation, it seems CM has a rather generous policy to me.

It is really easy to find fault with the hall monitor, until you become the hall monitor, you really have no right to complain.

Yes, you can be "slienced at will" here on CM, or any other internet site.

"Freedom of speech" only applies to government actions.  CM - as does any other privately owned and operated sites - has the right and ability to allow or not allow anyone it chooses to use it facilities, resources, and assets.

In fact, they have a duty and legal obligation to disallow certain types of communications.

True. Classically freedom of speech ends at shouting fire in a crowded theater. The equivalent here is doing something that gets the site closed and the owners and admins arrested for pedophilia among other things.

Which is why people who will talk about when they first started doing stuff at an age prior to being able to vote get their posts pulled.

TheHeretic -> RE: "Awaiting approval" (12/22/2007 12:04:43 PM)

I've been along for the ride on threads where posters crossed the line.  I'll plead for clemency and a pardon for some, but not on a basis of innocence or prejudicial treatment.  Every time I've seen it, there was plenty of reason (and sometimes I've wondered why it took so long).

     Merry Christmas XI.

Everyone get this wrong.

You have COMPLETE FREEDOM OF SPEECH TO DECLAIM "FIRE" IN A CROWDED THEATER.

You also have the responsibility to answer for your UNLAWFUL ACT, should you without just cause, unduly alarm said theater.

You can *SAY* anything you want, whenever you want. You give up your grounds for filing a battery charge against someone when you use "Fighting Words" previously...

OrionTheWolf -> RE: "Awaiting approval" (12/22/2007 2:18:39 PM)

Yeah but the servers and service to connect to the internet are not paid by the government. That is why there is a TOS on most if not all sites, especially if they are free sites.

Firmhand, I've always wondered about that.
Given that the "Internet" was created with U.S. Taxpayer Dollars by the pentagon and all.
Oh, and Moderator 11 and me get along famously!
I got one of those e-cards on my birthday from Moderator 6.
Perhaps  Moderator 11 forgot my birthday.

sexypet -> RE: "Awaiting approval" (12/22/2007 3:24:12 PM)

i think Mod 11 does a great job.  She has answered every question i have ever asked and taken appropriate action whenever needed.

Happy Holidays, Mod 11.

CalifChick -> RE: "Awaiting approval" (12/22/2007 4:31:06 PM)

I love Mod 11 also, and I'm not saying that just to get a Christmas present (I know she has just forgotten to ask for my address, I can wait patiently). [sm=kiss.gif]

I also know one day I will lose it and will come under Mod 11's special attention.  I figure it is not a matter of "if", but "when". Sigh.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: "Awaiting approval" (12/22/2007 6:38:20 PM)

I will say that the volunteer staff here, seems to give plenty of warning to a poster when it is appropriate. They have zero tolerance when it is appropriate as well. While I may not agree with all of their decisions, it is their forum, and I am but a guest. I used to moderate email lists and BBS's in the days of Al Gore first creating this thing, and know how difficult it can be sometimes.

FirmhandKY -> RE: "Awaiting approval" (12/22/2007 6:47:50 PM)

An interesting thought came to me while reading this thread again.

I've not been moderated, but I have received my share of .... "polite" ... warning from Mod11.  Some I thought were warranted, some I thought were not warranted.

But (thankfully) I've never been punished by being placed on moderation.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder who has been warned the most times, and still not be actually moderated?

From memory, since not all the emails have been saved, I think I've likely received at least 10 "warning" emails due to things I've posted on the forums.

Anyone else care to comment?

Firm

OrionTheWolf -> RE: "Awaiting approval" (12/22/2007 7:30:44 PM)

I can remember 3. I can see why in each case, but one of them was not intended as an insult to anyone, just me being my blunt and abbrasive self.

Something to remember is that the poster may not be new.  There are a handful of profiles who haven't followed TOS from day one.  And if you get a post pulled and moderated it doesn't show on your posting list/number of posts you have made.  So they may look like they haven't posted, but have - its just they keep getting pulled and keep breaking TOS.  Until you show willing, you aint gonna get off moderation.

the.dark.

Exactly.  The one I think you were referring to the other day had a few first time threads that were over the top crazy and scary and completely against the TOS with regard to unmentionable activities.  He may have appeared to be a first time poster because the threads were pulled but I can see why he was modded and totally believe it was necessary.

TheHeretic -> RE: "Awaiting approval" (12/22/2007 7:38:56 PM)

I've had considerably fewer than 10 nasty-grams, Firm.  Usually things just get moved, or vanished without any comment at all.

ahhh, I've never had one disappear without a missive from Mod11 ... "explaining" ... how I'd stepped over the line.  I'm counting those in my "10" number.

Firm

PS.  Ten is a likely number.  I could be off a little ... on the low side.  But I didn't want to brag.  [:D][:D]

I'm really, REALLY not trying to get her attention when I post.  I try hard to stay within the bounds of both the TOS and good net etiquette.

I don't remember precisely; once... maybe twice?

I'm such a bad girl.  [;)]

Knock on wood…nothing so far…but I don’t expect to ever get moderated...I am just too polite and non-confrontational. I may on a rare occasion use a little sarcasm but only to make a point…never to disrespect anyone.

But I'm new too
Butch

popeye1250 -> RE: "Awaiting approval" (12/22/2007 9:28:21 PM)

I've been warned 4 times by Mod 6, 2 times by Mod 7,  once by Mod 2 a long time ago and 5 times by Mod 11.
I think Mod 6 has a crush on me! She's very nice!
