This one's quite tame by common standards; 'not likely you'll get wet here, but I suppose once bitten twice shy.

Most of  the other items in a list provied by Farglebargle are concerned with ways to try and bring about organisational or administrative  political stability in Iraq. Note the item concerned with trying to ensure that revenue from Oil is

Have I missed something here or does the list say something postive about GWB

Bush didn't create those benchmarks... Congress did.

Bush, as far as evidenced, is unconcerned with the effects of his fraud and stupidity, and would rather *not* have any benchmarks, as they do nothing but prove in objective ways the unsophistication and failure of the policy, strategy and tactics.

So, are you one of those who consider a grade of 17% out of 100% to be PASSING?

<fast reply>

The CBS story had Bush and Hillary Clinton as the most admired people in America, not the world.

I was wondering how long it would take somebody to actually check the claim and show it for the rightwing bullshit it is.

But there's a certain norm: advertising via bullshit title, as happened here where the study for the U.S. is misrepresented in the thread title as "the world."

Page one my response to LadyEllen noted this

Well .... as per the audio on the video at the link that I provided at the beginning of this thread, here is the claim:

What do George W Bush and Hillary Clinton have in common?

Every year in December, Gallup asks the American public who the living man is - anywhere in the world - that they most admire, and who the woman is, anywhere in the world that they most admire.

With this information as the basis, then the title of the thread "Most Admired Man in World 2007" is 100% accurate, isn't it?

I sort of felt Fargle's list was a fancy way of saying, exactly the four points I made.

The other thing that came to mind, is that if Congress sets the goals, which is true, why is the surge being used to attack President Bush?

Emphasis added.

I wouldn't say it was 100 percent accurate, since Gallup polled only Americans, and one could read "Most Admired Man in World" to mean global admiration.

I also think it's interesting that only 10 percent of the Americans polled listed George W. Bush as the person they most admired. That means 90 percent listed someone else. So I wouldn't take the poll as a ringing endorsement by Americans, let alone the entire planetary population.

On a recent visit to the US, the Prime Minister and US President exchanged gifts: a book on Winston Churchill in exchange for a flying jacket. I admire them for having the nous to arrange this get together for the express purpose of getting rid of last year's unwanted Christmas presents.

I understand what you are saying ... but what word in the title is incorrect or doesn't belong?

The prepositional phrase in World is ambiguous and thus a poor choice for a headline, particularly since there's no mention of who's doing the admiring. It's not clear whether you mean that of all the people in the world, Bush is the one most admired by the poll respondents or that people worldwide admire Bush more than anyone else.

A better head might have been something along the lines of President Receives Most Votes in Gallup's "Most Admired Man" Poll. I'd change Bush to President, because the history of the poll suggests admiration for the holder of the office more than a particular individual. I'm not wild about using Most twice but don't see an easy alternative.

No, thanks! I do enough editing at work.

However, the gentleman asked a direct question, and I answered it.

On reflection, an even better one might be President Tops Americans' "Most Admired" List.

See, I even edit myself.

Because the Surge Strategy was created and promoted BY Bush's Administration. They put their balls on the line, and said, "This Will Work".

Congress gave them the money. And specified the Benchmarks.

BUSH SIGNED THE SPENDING BILL.

They spent the money, and put more soldiers at risk.

It didn't work.

So, Bush had the opportunity to 1) Formulate an *EFFECTIVE* Policy, Strategy, and Tactics and 2) Veto the spending bill, if it contained onerous provisions.

What is interesting is how people choose to interpret what they read.

That's certainly true. It's why good writers and editors strive for clarity (unless ambiguity is part of the artistic effect, of course).
