Amazingly, there was a study done decades ago on eskimos who eat whale blubber. It was found that they showed no signs of arteriosclerosis, contra to americans who ate almost no fat, yet drank milk regularly.

Yep. A diet consisting of almost nothing but fat and protein, and they had almost zero heart disease, or diabetes, or cancer.

And they weren't the only ones......[8|]

btw... there are documented cases also whereby folks (multiple occasions) on the atkins diet developed gout. They were advised by physicians to immediately cease atkins and their gout went away. Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not.

Yes, some do, and Dr Atkins never denied that possibility. My uric acid jumped up initially, upon starting a low carb diet, but has returned to normal.

What is the consistancey?  Is this similar to Atkin's Revolution Bread, I wonder?   Could ya make mini-sammies outta these?  I miss sandwitches...(a little).

It's kind of like a large bran muffin in consistancy.  I don't think it would work for sandwiches, but it is good with butter, cream cheese, SF jam or peanut butter according to my SB buddies.

Way to go Bev!!!

Some also subtract sugar alcohols but like someone said on here, that is controversial. Here's a pretty good explanation: http://www.mendosa.com/netcarbs.htm

My understanding is that total cholesterol is meaningless, it's the ratio that is important as well as triglycerides.  My ratio is 2.9 and my triglycerides are 35 so i feel pretty good about those.[:)]

Good evening, proud. One thing that stands out, is how there are a number of exceptions to all of this. What about those with bad ratios, that never have heart disease? Are they just lucky, or is there another answer to the cause of heart disease?

On ratios: I like the one used by Dr Michael Eades, he divides triglycerides by  HDL. Acceptable is under 5.

Level... You are doing sooooo well!!!    Pretty much at your weight goal by July, and an awesome blood-sugar level WITHOUT MEDS!

Yippieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...  ^5, kiddo!!!

Thank you for printing all that chemestry, it made me go look at mine.  Ya know, I know my cholesterole was higher than it was when I was younger, but that ol' ratio (not on meds) was always under 4.  I'm on meds now...but want to go off.  I hate the idea of meds; including the ones I'm on for HBP.  <sigh>

I'm figuring dropping weight will fix a whole BUNCH of stuff; huh?

I have some numbers it might be fun to note  (in spite of going on, and then back off, and then back on cholesterole meds (I thought they gave me cramps in my feet.......wasn't it YOU who told me the problem was hydration?  (you were RIGHT)).  Anyway...I'll look 'em up and post for the hellofit...and watch all the numbers improve by my birthday in July.  <huge grinz>  You are one of my heros, yanno.

Edited to add:  Here is a good page all about Alkaline Phosphatase:  http://www.drkaslow.com/html/alkaline_phosphatase.html  You were right again, Level.....it is a test regarding the liver, but also bone disease, gall bladder as well as adrenals, uterus and prostate!!!  (or so the one page I read says...[8|] )

I don't remember the hydration conversation, but I will say this: I will never again put a statin in my body [8|] They most certainly can cause you severe muscle pain and damage, destroy your liver, etc.

Thank you for the kudos [:)] I've learned a lot, but have a lot to still learn.

Okay, I talked to my doctor...and quit taking cholesterol meds; though he was not happy about it.  The more I read, the more convinced I am, like Level here, that we are over medicated.  As high as my readings have been (200+), my ratio has always been less than 4%.

I'm done with those serious muscle cramps!

And...even though I didn't 'get' the diet right off; and was too cheap to toss all of my perfectly good food: I've lost ten pounds so far (12 days).  And, I didn’t realize sandwich meat had sugar in it!  Good lord…is the whole world against us?

I like what I’ve read that loosing weight will be it’s own cure to high blood pressure and cholesterol… I’m looking to go of  BP meds, too.

Someone gave me a bread machine a bit ago.  It makes small loves of bread.  I'm wondering if it makes sense to keep it.  If I eat really, really good bread and only occasionally...should I keep the thing?  ARE there recipes for dense, wholesome and low carb bread that is okay to eat…now and then?  I am not talking white bread, here.

Ever curious,
Beverly

I've found that I feel way, way better on a low-carb, high-protein diet with lot of fruits and vegetables. I sleep better, my mood is better, I can work out much harder.....but that didn't stop me from eating a pound of home-made sesame noodles yesterday.

Tiger, you're evil, just EVIL!  Taunting us with those noodles!  STOP IT!!!!!!

Ummm, did you save me any?

MsBearlee -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/12/2008 3:29:30 PM)

mmmmmmm... noodles!   Have you tried Spaghetti Squash?

Cut it in half, scoop out seeds, put cut side down in a baking dish with a little water; and steam it.

Dang, it's a really good substitute for pasta or noodles and even grated potatoes, if you pat it dry and fry it like hash-browns.

christine1 -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/12/2008 3:37:34 PM)

i can't believe i'm saying this since i'm a carnivore at heart, but i feel best when i eat mostly vegetarian with a little meat here and there.  i'm not self disciplined enough to do it all the time, there is NO WAY i'm going to ever give up red meat completely, but i do feel my best on a low carb, high fruit/veggie/whole grain diet with meat here and there.

Not only did I not save you any, I ate it all standing over the sink wearing nothing but a wife beater and a backwards "Oral Roberts University" baseball cap.

And gained not a pound. Curse this high metabolism of mine.

mm chipotle pepper flakes...

You should stick with what works for you, but you are not describing a low carb diet by any means.  You are describing a moderate to low glycemic index, high carbohydrate, low fat and low to moderate protein diet.  There is nothing wrong with that if it meets your personal needs and goals, but it is definitely not the same as a low carb diet.

mmmmm... I might be new at this, but how on earth can a high fruit/veggie/whole grain diet with meat here and there - diet BE low carb?  That goes against everything I've read.  Seems to me a carvivore...eating red meat mostly...would, by default, be the one eating a low carb diet.

Hey, I found this recipe that looks like it might be OK for low carb diets...

Paula Dean on Food Network

........ whatcha all think?

Najakcharmer -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/12/2008 5:48:46 PM)

It will work fine, and is better yet if you add ground flaxseed.  Peanut butter is not extremely low carb, but some of it fits nicely into the less restrictive low carb plans.

LeMis -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/12/2008 6:33:25 PM)

So add the ground flaxseed in place of ( ? ) or in additon to the recipe?
I had bought some ground golden flaxseed to add to my protein shake and ...
[:'(]
it wasn't pleasant at all.
If I remember correctly I didn't/couldn't finish my protein shake, and it's not like I have more than a cup of liquid to drink up.

Folks have suggested using flaxseed in baking but I try to steer clear of flour, blah blah blah... although while I was out west this past summer my friend took me shopping for alternative flours made from nuts and healthier things.  I may have to search for a similar place to purchase those here in FL.

Thanks Najakcharmer for your thoughts on the recipe.

Switch to flax oil in your shakes then, and cook with flaxseed meal.  It makes awesome muffins.  I'm pretty hardcore and will put anything in my protein shakes including tuna, but I understand that normal people still have taste buds.  [:D]

Flaxseed bears no relationship to wheat flour.  It's a seed, not a grain.  Flaxseed, almond meal and soy or whey protein makes a very fine flour when mixed together, and contains no wheat at all.
