Awwwwwww, laurel.  I believe I know exactly what you mean, but I'm guessing (for me at anyway), that at least part of my emotional eating IS a result of what I've been eating.  I felt like crap, looked like crap...and wanted to have that bowl of pasta at ten o'clock at night.  I deserved it/it made me feel better/I left out the (fatty) sausage so it would be healthful.  <sigh>  There is so much I was doing bassakwards!  Now I read that what I've been doing (eating empty carbs) actually promotes doing more of it!!!  Surely physical addiction-like eating is all wrapped up in emotional eating, too, huh?
 
Anybody...feel free to jump in here, please!
 
Just starting this thread has helped me keep focused and committed...........not to mention ENTHUASTIC about changing how and what I eat.  And, I already feel better.
 
Look, I live alone, my home is still under construction (it’s 100 years old and needs work), I live in a small and very poor county where my boss is experiencing difficulties (read that; I wonder how long I’ll have a job) and my kid is missing.  I'm stresssed a bit.  Yeah…I keep putting stuff in my mouth because it does make me feel better!  Dammit, I’m gonna consider thumb sucking!  …………… orrrrrrrrrrr…

it was homemade, with fresh pumpkin!!! :)
one of the reasons i love halloween so much, cooking the pumpkin after it is over

Well, I thought the way I posed my QUESTION showed I had NOT jumped to any conclusions.  What I said was:  "Sooooooooo… perhaps you are not using a low-carb diet, then?  Not to say it is the ‘One Twue Way’…just curious."
 
How that prompts a snippy comment is beyond me.  I am new to this diet, I am no expert on diets or nutrition; THAT would be why I asked!!!

Thanks Rush!  Did you happen to catch the part about grazed vs gain-fed beef a couple pages ago.  CLA is a really good thing...and perhaps worth (but maybe not, I dunno yet) the extra cost of free-range meat.
 
Yeah, the stuff that ends up in milk is scary!  I've read some children are hitting sexual-adolecence at something like age 9 or 10...a reaction to hormones in milk.  I only drink organic, now.  Oh wait...I don't drink milk right now!  LOL...maybe later.

Emotional eating definitely plays into it, laurel.  Believe it or not, too many carbs can actually play into the emotional mood swings, too.  I'd have never believed it if I did not live it myself...

While not true for everyone- some people just can't handle that many carbs anymore, but their bodies crave them- and the more they eat- the more they crave.  Which tends to lead to an overall feeling of sluggishness, lack of energy, and other physical symptoms- all of which help to ~keep~ a person down.

It's really hard to eliminate carbs in the beginning.  It's like going through withdrawal- but is it ever worth it!  Within days (to a couple of weeks) you will stop craving the carbohydrates- you will feel better, have more energy, and just a better overall outlook.  It's hard to believe- but, it's true...and from the research I have done, and the testimonials I have read, it's true for many, MANY people.

MsBearlee and bebe-  what is considered 'low carb' is highly subjective.  While bebe's carb intake is low compared to the average American diet- it's much higher than some folks on Atkins or Dr. Bernstein's low carb diabetic diet would ever consider eating.  Like so many other things in life, ymmv...and it all depends on your body, your metabolism, and why you are looking to eat this way.  For me, right now, I try to limit my morning carbs to about 6- and my other meals at about 12-15 a piece, with a few thrown in for snacks along the way.  45 carbs is a 'high carb' day- for ~me~.  There may come a time when I add more back in, then again, maybe not.  It all depends on what my body can handle.  And, quite honestly, I can eat like royalty on 45 carbs a day...

I have definitely noticed that. I get STARVING when I eat carbs. My moods, and appetite are much more even when I am eating a low carb diet. I do know there is an emotional component as well, because I still do eat when I am not hungry. I want to get to a place where food is just food:)

just an add in about milk....several recent studies have noticed a link between the hormones in milk and adhd/add in kids. I cut all dairy from my oldest sons diet and you should see the improvement in his behavior!! its amazing, I never would have believed it if I hadnt seen it for myself. I've got links to the studies saved on the other computer so if anyones interested I can post them when my Sir gets home.

I do just fine on way less too (since the 'flu' thang is overwith...LOL), which is why well over 100 sounded to me like alot, but I had no real idea.  Because I didn't KNOW that number was less than the average American...I was asking.  I really appreciate your response, sweet.  Thanks a bunch!

most americians eat approx 3770 calories a day and approx 445g of carbs
thats 48% of their calories going to carbs only, 39% to fat, and only 13% to protien

anyways theres no reason to nicpick about each other "diets" because im sure were all here for information, advice, support, and recipes
the fact is we are all choosing healthier lifestyles and that is what i think is most important

Here's a recipe some of you might enjoy, it's been going around my South Beach message board and i finally tried it--yummy!! and is good for phase one of SB.  It's a single serving that only takes one minute to cook:


Muffin in a Minute

Serving Size: 1

1/4 cup flax meal (I use Bob's Red Mill but you can put 2 T. flax seeds in grinder)
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 packet splenda packet (I skip this)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 large egg
1 teaspoon butter (I use olive oil)

Put the dry ingredients in a coffee mug. Or a bowl for a different shape.

Stir.

Then add the egg and the butter. Mix.

Microwave 1 minute (or more). Take out. slice, butter, eat. Set mug to soak immediately.

Cream cheese would go nicely, too.

Notes: 1.5 net carbs.

Per serving: 235 Calories; 18g Fat (63% calories from healthy fat); 12g Protein; 11g Carbohydrate; 9.5 g. fiber; 223mg Cholesterol;
284mg Sodium

hmmmmmmm... now, that looks interesting!  LOL   While I never did go to Micky D's... the thought of an egg muffin kinda sounds great right now!  What is the consistancey?  Is this similar to Atkin's Revolution Bread, I wonder?   Could ya make mini-sammies outta these?  I miss sandwitches...(a little).
 
Now I have to go see if those little seeds I bought for salads ARE Flax seeds! 
 
I wonder...if you can make 'bread' in a cup like this; could you also make some sort of low-carb bread at home?  Someone gave me a bread machine...but I seldom ate bread, really (other than the ocassional sandwich), I wonder if I could come up with something?  I mean, 1.5 carbs in a serving of 'bread' isn't at all bad!!!
 
Oh...and I have officially lost seven (7) pounds in exactly one week.   <smiles broadly>  Oddly, today a friend (who does not know I'm trying to loose weight) came in and made a pointed comment that I looked GREAT! 

Heh heh heh...it's worrrrrrrrrrrkinggggggggg!  <does a happy dance>

edited to add:  Oh...NET carbs.  I'm gonna have to consider this.  Perhaps for right now, like Level suggested, I might just count regular ol' carbs and then later...when I've dropped some weight, consider the Net Carb thang.  Isn't it Carbs - Fiber that gives ya Net Carbs?  Hell, I'm so new at all this, it's amazing I'm even loosing weight already...I've not been exactly 'strict' the whole seven days; I didn't KNOW stuff yet!

1- They taste pretty decent, Beverly; if someone can't have bread, they make a solid replacement. They're easy to make, I'd suggest you whip up a batch, and see what you think. Some love them, some don't! [:D]

2- I don't believe humans need carbs, I think they do far more damage than good. And, keeping a tight grip on them allows me to have normal blood sugar.

see im wondering about cholesterol because of this.....my mom had a cholesterol test done when she was about 65 i think.......hers was, and im using a memory that isnt really great here-but it was some outrageous number like 450 or 650 or something.  the dr freaked and immediately ordered a heart cath, knowing he would find her arteries to be like cement.

he came out from the test amazed, and said she had the arteries of a 20 year old.....mom found it all amusing and said to him i could have told you that-i use pure d lard and pure butter only-none of the processed junk they make these days.  she loved being right-lmfao

thats why im trying to work it out in my brain what to balance.....and thanks Level, as usual, you rock.

By reducing your intake of milk, you also reduce your risks of heart disease. Especially if you refrain from drinking homogenized milk.

During the homogenization process, there is an enzyme called xanthan oxidase which becomes encapsulated and insoluble in your arteries. It bounces around in the arteries, creating microscopic trauma within the arterial walls. The body then creates cholesterol to patch up these wounds. In time, the patches grow, restricting blood flow and hardening the arteries.

Amazingly, there was a study done decades ago on eskimos who eat whale blubber. It was found that they showed no signs of arteriosclerosis, contra to americans who ate almost no fat, yet drank milk regularly.

When you think of all the obiter dictum about "natural order" and see that the person spewing out such rhetoric is drinking a big glass of cow's milk, it begs the question... is it just talk?

Cow's milk is naturally made to put big bones on a big fat barn animal. And even then, there comes a time when calves will no longer drink cow's milk.

Any lactating subs out there? I need some milk for my coffee.

btw... there are documented cases also whereby folks (multiple occasions) on the atkins diet developed gout. They were advised by physicians to immediately cease atkins and their gout went away. Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not.

IMO, you keep your mom and that story in mind, my friend. The cholesterol hypothesis is going to be tossed on the scrapheap of medical history, one day. The sooner the better.
