MsBearlee -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/4/2008 7:45:57 AM)

Blech... I still have a headache and feel sluggish and somewhat achy!  ugg...hopefully this will not last long!  I wonder if it is the fiber pills I accidently doubled up on (well...even at that, I only took the recommended daily amount; I just usually only take one-a-day.) that make me feel so bloated and full...or might it be the diet?

I've been poking around for info on those dip-sticks, or whatever they're called; the strips for ketosis testing; anybody have information regarding what I should be looking for..............OR how often to be using said strips?  So far I've found various testing kits that are $.22 each strip to $.47 per strip.  Of course, what they measure varies greatly!

Charmer, that's why I'm telling folks 'I'm getting ready' to go on a diet, I've got a bunch to read (I just discovered a salad isn't 2-3 cups of greens with a few slices of carrot and celery! <sigh>)

That's a very good meal later on in this diet, topped with some meat.

In the meantime, I have quit eating bread, starch, pasta, and grain and upped the protein and fat quite a bit.  Unfortunately last night I also ate about 5 oz of smoked almonds…and so feel like crap right this minute.  Ugg  (That would  be why I don’t keep chips around…I can’t eat just one!)

Welcome to Induction Flu.  You *will* feel like shit for anywhere from three days to two weeks when your body initially kicks over to dietary ketosis (fat burning) from a formerly sugar dependent metabolism (glucose).  Almonds are an acceptable snack in smaller portions later in the diet, but you should mostly stick to raw/unsalted to avoid those cravings for more.

It was odd, yesterday afternoon I got a raging headache…and I don’t get a headache even once a year.  I wonder if it was diet-related.

Yes.  One of the most annoying things about the Atkins book is that it is written for laypeople....not too bright laypeople....and lacks technical explanation as well as conveniently forgetting to mention how rotten you're going to feel on the initial adjustment period. It will pass, and then you'll feel much better - permanently - as long as you don't lapse and start going nuts with the carbs.  If you do that, then you have a chance of kick-starting Induction Flu again when you cross back over to ketosis.

Level -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/4/2008 3:13:36 PM)

Najakcharmer is right about the "flu" Beverly; it's a small price to pay for good health, IMO. I promise, it does pass!

MsBearlee -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/4/2008 3:32:58 PM)

Thank you both... it's been a couple days now; I hope I'm not one to feel like this for two weeks!

I'm broker than I thought, so just figured out how to order books from all over the state to my local library; The Paleo Diet is on the way!  I got a couple of Atkin's books, too...so I'll be more prepared to do this right, real soon!

You folks have talked about ketosis...I figured it was a good idea to get those strips.  Any body know how often to use 'em?   I do some billing for a doctor and 'tested' a couple strips today.  Apparently I am not in ketosis, but the girl said it is not likely to show up for a couple weeks?  Is that right?  Should I bother with the strips, or no?  What kinda strips...I've found there are so many things they 'can' test for.

CalifChick -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/4/2008 4:02:31 PM)

If you are only eating things that used to walk about on your own, I'm thinking it doesn't matter if you test or not. You'll see the results on the scale.

Also, you might be able to smell it.  Some people can smell ketones, I can, and a friend of mine who is a doctor also can, which she said comes in very handy in detecting issues with diabetics.  We were walking together once, at an event, and a woman we knew passed between us, and my friend and I both stopped abruptly and said "ketones", then we turned around to catch up to her to make sure she was okay.  She was not dieting, but she was diabetic, and ketosis is a serious issue with diabetics.

Drink a metric fuckton of water, it helps.  Typical duration is less than a week, but some people have a rougher transition than others.  The more you cheat the rougher and more prolonged it is.

Atkins new Diet Revolution (not the early edition) is a good choice.  Drop me a cmail and I'll send you some further resources.

They're expensive.  If you find them motivational and helpful, go for it.  Otherwise don't bother, just monitor everything that goes into your mouth, ideally by gram weight or at least grams of carbs. Save your money for food.  Individual readings tend to vary in any case.

I never used the strips; as long as I lost weight, and felt good, that's all that mattered to me. [;)]

Now, ketosis is not harmful for diabetics, but diabetic ketoacidosis is; sounds a lot alike, but two different things.

Thanks Level, sometimes my brain goes faster than my fingers.

Ummm, I'm sure there's something dirty in that statement, somewhere.

Yes, I read that too, Level.  I have no idea if I am Diabetic or not...I just know it's time to make changes.  I have 30-40 pounds I'd like to loose, and I just want to feel better.

I have not meant to cheat on the diet...I just did not have my ducks in a row.  By the end of this weekend, I will have things set to do Phase I...right.  In that I don't have DrB's book yet, I'll do Atkins' diet.  I picked up several books that list different things in different ways...as well as many recipes, so, between those and time to spend on the internet...I'll have a much better idea how to get serious!  And I will...

Thank you both for the info regarding the strips...I'm happy not to purchase them and spend my money, instead, on the rather expensive protein I'm going to be eating!  LOL

You'll do great, Beverly [;)] It's like most anything else, it just takes some time and effort, and you can do it.

I originally dissed the pork rinds too Bearlee, but they are a great accoutrement when you need crunch:)

Im not sure Ive ever seen the words "pork rinds" and "accoutrement" used in the same sentence before.

I hope you people are putting some flax seed oil on those pork rinds.

So you want us to take the skin of a pig, which has been deep fried in OIL, and then smear some more oil on it?

Seriously.  I don't care how good flax seed oil is supposed to be.  Seriously?

OrionTheWolf -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/4/2008 7:36:48 PM)

I understand it is different for each person, and why I mentioned that a higher carb intake, combined with a change in diet and more exercise, is what got my metabolism going. I do not know the specific, as far as fat to lean body mass, but my Blood Pressure got better, as did resting and exercising heart rate. I wound up having more energy, and requiring less sleep. All in all, I felt and acted healthier, so for me it was better. I still limit red meat, and try to stay with white meat or seafood. The portions I eat or much smaller, as I eat until I am no longer hungry, instead of eating until I am full (holidays and special occasions are the exception).

lauren0221 -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/4/2008 8:22:25 PM)

Absolutely, Orion. Dieting is like most things - no such thing as One Twue Way.

I happen to have some issues that prevent me from handling carbs properly. I would not presume that what works for me would be the best thing for everyone, and certainly can't argue with something that is working for you:)

On South Beach we eat the baked or microwaveable pork rinds, much lower in saturated fats.

Orion - sounds like you did an excellent job of taking your own health and fitness in hand.
